2009
I should really be getting some sleep, but since we were on the topic
of books (TheFireBook.org) and did a BookSprint
on OLPC XOs across the world in early September,
and it's a holiday weekend, and all you non busy
people who happen to be reading my blogging/
reporting anyway, thought I'd share
(possibly thanks to VOCAL for possibly dealing
with a ConstantContact Alternative)...

Having only spent a few hours in the heat recently, and basically
being housebound because of it, I'm remembering and publicizing
that our homeless [and others] are probably in need of help,
as cooling stations at Drop In Centers, and kindness,
instead of the nastiness, so maybe that is the southern
charm, a politness that developed over the centuries,
on how to be kind to people, because it's hot as hell
out there, and that's before global warming...

Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act of July 26, 1990,
and now 19 years later how far have we come? Don't know how
it was, but highlighting the President Obama's statement,

Saturday June 25, 27, 2009 in the afternoon, OnOurOwnBaltimore had
an open house for the Dundalk Center and annual meeting. Seems
like maybe what RRWG could become, as OOOMD has been around
since, well, they started it... 27 28 years or so ago... Check the announcement
that I'll paste in the title link page above, and get into [my experience with] it more...

Chronologically, the Institute had another Trauma Conference,
a full day event, and maybe the last one, but I didn't make it,
(TVTherapy with childhood stars on cable, a little while before hearing
Michael Jackson died) so difficult to report on it, maybe I should
just phone it in???
But told others about it, and granted some writers access to
contribute here in the queue, so maybe they can write/ post/
report/ contribute/ give back on it here???
Hint: Use the last pull down Template, add/cut and paste
this text intro from here on FrontPage, and put what you want
[within reason in the body, allow for feedback in discussion,
and comments, etc..] and don't get too upset if someone like
me edits you, as seasoned writers, and frustrated writers,

The state consumer organization VOCAL (Virginia Organization of Consumers

June 2-4, 2009. Roots and Wings is the theme of this years conference,
and will see how it goes and hopefully report about it up here again this year...

Addendum: Click title link for 4k words of description of one person's experience
there...One of the highlights of the VOCALCon2009 , besides the open mic
entertaining gong show like performances of our aspiring American Idols was
the Peer Specialists organizing, found online at http://vpsc.collectivex.com/
Virginia Peer Support Coalition, held an organizing meeting
(one of 3-4? all others I've missed so far). Website requires
registration, and mostly for Certified, but will see how the great unwashed rest of us
unpaid people fit in... Ironically, this pbwiki/ pbworks.com site started out of the Peer
Specialist focus group done years ago with Pat, and I took photos of the group notes,
and had no place to put them, plus the other websites, NVMHCA, VaOrgCAssertingLeadership
with yahoo groups and others CWC, OOOFxCo, etc not able to afford/ create peer / consumer/s/x
driven information sharing, and previously got it in the VOCAL Network grant and later RRWG grant,
but still I'm not funded to make it what it should be, much more work than one person,
unpaid is going to get done, like here... But rested some after VOCALCon2009 and being more
positive (at least for little old depressive me, on father's day? Founding Father's day?
or deadbeat dad day? not sure which... [June 21st or so NOT TODAY)

Stand Up for Mental Health appeared at the newly renovated TC Williams High School
('Remember the Titans' movie subject) and across the King Street from David O'Brien's
funeral home reception and a Radio$hack store...
To a mostly filled auditorium, with tables of Mental Health Month intormation outside
in the entranceway/ foyer, the Alexandria CSBExec, David Granirer and some people
trained by him presented a form of stand up comedy like his book
"The Happy Neurotic: How Fear and Angst Can Lead to Happiness and Success"
(ISBN 189462275-8 $15 warwickgp.com sold on site afterwards taking the last of my cash,
as well as Videos available, which I could not afford, even after $3 million out, so poor personally...)
Remembering David O'Brien like to open stuff up with a joke, it was perhaps fitting,
though a little painful to have humor at a site so close to the funeral home, in a site
with so much memories of civil rights, way back in the 60's? and still continuing, it seems
to this day, conflicts, but with Obama, maybe reparations are on the way? First Stimulus
Funding, next catch up on the debts???
Anyway, some politics and personal pain / grieving aside, the counselor Granirer
had the audience laughing and probably crying too, Click on the title link to hear more...

Arlington Recovery and Empowerment Center opened it's doors in early May,
and having missed the opening celebration, Jerry stopped by one early afternoon
in mid to late May and talked with some people there, got some pictures
(given to the organizers, officers and staff, and perhaps best to be replaced with better
pictures, as while I've been published, I'm not a pro and they didn't turn out
as well as hoped...)
They have a brochure for the center, a small library of recovery publications,
and some initial activities including WRAP, iirc. Your participation is requested
in welcoming Arlington to the regional and state drop in center community...
It is Jerry's opinion that visiting the center and cross fertilization
(the right word? pollenation?) will help the center grow into what we all want,
what it will and we can become...
Welcome AREC and congratuations, starting a center is a long and difficult
task (imagine trying to get a group of c/s/x, much less anyone else,
to agree upon anything, much less mission, policy and procedures, incorporation,
hiring, decor, etc), and kudos on opening your doors...
Clicking on above title link will give contact info like address, etc.
but I can't seem to find the hours quickly while catching up before going

For those that haven't bothered to read the long winded, stream of
consciousness, lots of whining and other stuff on the early development
of this site, a quick review in the title link above...
20090601 8 am Jerry
During the NVRPP meeting or the RMG meetnig before, both open public
meetings, a comment was made that CSB Execs wanted
'meat' in the Peer Specialist training being developed and initiated
by providers for the region. It occurred to me at the time,
and later that what providers consider meat, and
the general vegetarian nature of many consumers/ survivors/
ex-patients may be a mismatch. This site is sometimes like a psychiatric
yelp, comments on some actions made with public funds,
and just thought you should know...
What appers to be missing, the special sauce, as it were,
is the consumer directed principle part of the original proposal
as up on this site and approved by the state,
with outside expert and almost token consumer representation
(one paid former RRWG staff among 5 CSB Execs and 2 Facilities
NVMHI aka the Institute and NVTC aka the training center
in the RMG/RPO), it's a wonder how your average
John Q. Consumer, much less the people working/
volunteering/ suffering on the RRWG could get
an adequate hearing on matters that effect them.
And to hear that CSBExecs voted on taking the money
to the local jurisditions when most of the RRWG
doesn't seem to even be consulted
upon their work products seems criminal to me,
as in 'misappropriation of funds'...
Much more could be said about the control freaks
activities directed at c/s/x, but it's fallen upon deaf
ears so far, so why bother...
20090601 8.36 am Jerry
Here are some of my published writings in StreetSense, some
MH related, typed in before I realized that some were now
up on StreetSense.org archives. Interesting to see how the
writing has and hasn't changed, plus look at accomplishments
of writing some poetry that was published, learning some
layout, but the interpersonal stuff of suspension for
a writing offense still not a good feeling...

When the money was no longer flowing to PathwayHomes,
they pulled the Recovery.html web page and from the main menu
[ used in older entries/ links below] describing
RRWG's work, including developing funding application forms,
accounting forms, and other descriptions on that page
and associated stuff. Interesting how the mission
of Recovery is a passing fad for an organization
that still has it stated in it's mission. Guess you have to
get paid to help? So many C/S/X volunteers don't
get anything for years of work and providers
[also as RRWG officers] cut the $50 / meeting stipend
amounts in half overriding the consumer directed
Stipend Committee's recommendations ,
but a 501c3 with mostly paid providers and executives
that got our RRWG administrative and fiscal fees and
they can't keep stuff up on their website?
What are hosting fees? Hundreds per year?
And they got tens of thousands in fees, but
can't continue web hosting to archive our stuff??

20090503 10.36 am Jerry most links would just work, but will be starting
to use .pbworks.com instead, just in case. Old stuff might be a problem,
they tried to make it a seamless transition, but it's not like an open source
community process, the hosting company just did it, nothing but a free t shirt
offer for new name suggestions.... Considered suggesting Pretty Bad Wiki?
Weekly's toy? But as a free hosting service, that added gigs to file space
and was thought to be a good choice to start, mostly because I wanted
something easy to use for others, but when the programming API
would not support dl all the editing times to form a bill,
I probably lost thousands $$ in possible billing....
Not the only thing, but it didn't help...
It cost me a new hybrid car dude!...
I'll take that $1.5 mil Tesla prototype. now please...
On the anniversary of the Columbine school shootings

Here are some drafts and notes from January and February 2008 that shows
my feelings of wasting my time and issues with Street Sense plus lots of work
that never made it into publication, though similar stuff did from interns and others....
I wrote Housing under Bridges as a start for my own publication, but then
ended up giving the ideas to Street Sense [when they didn't even support
my application to use allocated RRWG website funds], only to be 'suspended'
like others on the equivalent of trumped up charges.

Jerry W., as a newly elected co-Chair presided in
the general meeting with other co-Chair's supplied
agenda, one psychiatrist, two lawyers, one reverand,
and more consumer / survivor/ ex-patient, provider

than you might imagine..
Jerry created an introduction, reminiscent of NVMHCA's
icebreakers meetings, giving members an opportunity
to voice their
Name,
Role(s)/Affiliations,
What Changes they would like to see, and
One Positive thing over the last month/year...
Within 15 minutes, though it went over,
most people responded about changing the meetings,
but didn't get specific about what changes were requested,
so perhaps a comment form/ [online] suggestion box?
The 2 hour meeting ended on time, one of the few in
the last 2+ years, but did not get into the fiscal issues
as much, some heated and emotional statements,
given there isn't much information available
at this time (some expect the governor's budget to
determine things 'downstream', so to speak).

A late PBWiki entry [out of posting time sequence as catching up after holidays]
noting that I've published an article critical of Obama written the day after the election results
in StreetSense [not yet online]. I'm an equal opportunity Hater,
as Bush and other political figures including latest 'DC DMH: It's Not Our Policy'
with 'Baron von DMH' have not done so well in my published works either...
What is really behind the title and not published is that the concept was developed over three yearly
Tavistock Power Diversity and Politics Conferences at Howard University
[one of the last I had to leave to arrive by time boundary,
missing the conclusions of a critical IT One meeting],
given that Tavistock are typically world class provider/student experiential training
intending to change the world, but if it doesn't get out of Harvard/Ivory Tower,
then how would that happen?
The Tavistock warned people of 'don't trying this at home', like
talking about what it means to have a black man replace a white man in a leadership role,
psychoanalytic interpretations like
'Does the White Female Director have enough milk to feed the entire group?'
[alluded to in DeadPoetsSociety] or very similar, and while bringing the lettered words,
C[razy] H[omeless] or even N[erd] world into Ivory Tower community
and hearing things from Psych ward students like
'they check in but don't check out' and other experiences of being a hated minority...
'Would we be apologetic if this conference were at G.W.U. instead of Howard?'
and other such things still memorable after a total duration of three years...
Not sure how to contain it, as people have strong feelings about experiences others have
and haven't had based on physical, cultural and sleep deprivation experiences,
but maybe the next article is Reverse Racism Anonymous?
Pre-Obama, Crackers Anonymous has been running for at least a year,
complete with Jewish Mother Jerry 'Where's the Editor's Knife Gone?' W.
feeding people, and trying to abstain from applying guilt...
Look for a meeting in your local publishing house soon aka 'This Old Church'...
Burning crosses, swasticas, skin heads, drugs, gangs, thugs, threats
and weapons as well as sheets, to be left at home/outside...
Actually nothing much has been said about any of it to moi,
so maybe people think just another racist cracker???
20081213 4.00 pm by Jerry W. aka 'Wheelchair Whittaker, Whitey [really Red] Man Walking'
and other such blatently tasteless inflamatory stuff...

SafeLinkWireless.com is a free prepaid Tracfone (& Net10?) cell phone and 68 minutes of airtime per month for those receiving public assistance such as Medicaide, Food Stamps or Federal Public Assistance housing OR "Your total household income is at or below 135% of the poverty guidelines set by your State and/or the Federal Government." plus some other non duplicated LifeLine services, one per household, no PO Boxes and verification type fine print. An online (only?) registration process is required and a phone arrives delivered to a residence in less than 10 days. Cell minutes are automatically transferred to the turned on phone in the first three days of each month. You can purchase Tracfone (and eventually SafeLinkWireless) cards to add additional airtime over the free amount. International calls are considered at the same rate as local and some service of receiving internatioal calls is mentioned. Activiation of a year is included, after a year, you would need to reapply to continue eligibility. Estimated value of this service is $200.
It may do some of the basic Assistive Technology for those without cell phone or limited income. No web nor data services appear to be available on Tracfones, besides text messaging, so we are not talking Blackberries or the latest cool cell phones for poor people. Handsets are limited and not appearing to be PDA Smartphone compatible, though may be GSM. Given some scares about cell phone radiation, and general concern with driving with cell phones, though not sure how someone on limited income affords a vehicle, it may level the field a little and provide a way of calling 911 especially in low rent project like areas with gangs.
We will see if any issues including privacy, as most prepaid phone do not require you to identify yourself and can be done psuedo-anonymously with cash, whereas this requires name, address, and income/asset information, though the website was encrypted and signed by Equifax Secure (credit report company?), apparently it's government funded by the manditory fees off cell phone users, similar to land lines, though metered landlines or the diminishing payphones may be a better value for real world call times. Researching the service, reading the fine print and website privacy information may be revealing...
VOCAL sent out an email link about this service and Derick mentioned it in the last RRWG meeting during announcements time, especially in difficulties or exclusion in getting it listed in NetworkOfCare...
During the October SteeringCommittee meeting, while summarizing the RRWG experience with departing CSB Exec Thur, Jerry publicly recommended to standing legislator Barker introducing anti-bullying legislation for our schools, between providers, police and consumers/survivors/ex-patients, and the general community.
Click the title above to see the document. Sometimes Jerry just creates a page without partial summary
to track the number of page views, especially on contraversial or toxic topics...
The OneLaptopPerChild (laptop.org) little green machine that Jerry's been using in meetings (since using his personal holiday gift money last year) is available again this holiday season. Starting around Nov 18 or so, probably through Christmas 2008 or New Year, the same hardware but updated Linux system and application software is available through Amazon. That would mean it is theoretically available to RRWG and local consumers, as an Assistive Technology purchase. There are some limitations with the machine, built in kid sized keyboard being a main one (though takes an external USB keyboard), but it would be really kewl to mesh network while wordsmithing before, during, after and outside RRWG meetings. No video output for a projector, but might be able to work around that... See the Laptop.org website for more info. Cost for those providers (and other funded/paid people) looking to spoil their children/ grandchildren/ etc with a MIT designed machine: $400 plus shipping for two, while one goes to a kid in a Least Developed Country, as part of the GiveOneGetOne donation program. And, we are all kids sometimes with toys but this one Jerry uses as a low cost commuting wireless network appliance and hopefully for bike touring later with solar panels and dynohubs.
Ray has provided great service to the community over the years, as a co-treasurer of the RRWG, and more other roles than I can imagine even attempting (including a mentor to me), plus overseeing proposal money and process. He will be sorely missed. Rumor has it he's found paid employment elsewhere, and I wish him luck and hope he still stays sociable...
PBWiki, our current host, has updated their software, and I've quickly upgraded the site to the new system. Things may be a little different interface wise, but probably has the same functionality plus added features. NOTE: The classic editing has been lost, so you must do WYSIWYG graphical editing.
Jerry will be playing around with new features, but still keeping the system locked, as may require paying hosting fees to really share and get multilevel (admin, editor, writer, viewer) security plus file space and full backups, last I knew. Otherwise, granting full access has not worked well in this group in the past.
Like the paid staff taking credit for funding things when he had nothing to do with getting the money in the first place, nor gotten the group any more, as the recent Steering/Partnership meeting showed, reporting on the AT project, while being paid to be there, but not thanking Doug for his long service in making it a viable project, taking over for Beverly, The First AT and the person who put it in the original proposal.
After a year volunteering with StreetSense, I've also been editing and got some low level press credentials, as having been published many times. Some of the Mental Health related stuff is:
St_Elizabeths_Summer_Concert_Series-1.txt,
Gotta_go_now_what_.txt (more homelessness, but hard to say homelessness is good for anyone's MH),
self_employment.txt ).
For photography, most recently published in October 2008 with seven photos (one color front page on Gleaning, one color back page on a Street Sense silent auction and five black and whites in the associated articles).
In the same October 2008 issue, a Theatre Review of Carrie Fisher's "Wishful Drinking", see
There's.Something.about.Carrie.Fisher.in.Wishful.Drinking.txt for a slightly butchered and incomplete
version, so go support your local vendor for a good copy ;-}
[with a stock Arena Restaged photo there]
describing substance abuse and Bipolar themes in a Hollywood context.
My Kennedy Center Open House piece is published, but currently in purgatory due to some of my political statements drawing parallels with our Harvard president and candidate plus Lincoln... Far from the most offensive stuff I've got in print or in process... Damn liberal PIA media...
In addition, I've been learning some InDesign (cough, Winblows, cough, blue screen of death, cough, Flakey Drive, f*, deadline, gag, choke) layout and some editing by creating and adopting plus naming the Writer's Group page "Will Write for Food" after volunteering for a year of weekly groups, donating food and time when I can, and many times when I cannot to get things out and published.
[N.B./Disclaimer: This NoVAPeers.PBWiki.com site is not intended to be a good writing sample, [except maybe for run on sentences? ;-/..., though some attempts at vengeful poetry like DeadPoetsSociety have been instructive...]
Internally, official records of an organization like RRWG are important, so if paid staff is changing or inserting things in minutes, then maybe it's to their benefit, (trying to justify what they want with consumer input, not to mention discrediting opposition sending off copies to people who don't actually bother attending the meetings, cough providers/ administrators/ legistlators, cough), instead of in the public trust, with public money???
See also the page example of what got edited and excluded from the official record of a meeting that could go to court?
Update 20081025: Since the remaining two Provider and Family oscifers/incumbents didn't seem to like [someone on] the ballot, they wait and create other candidates, instead of filling consumer and nonprofit vacancies when they occurred (Wendy as non-profit co-chair, Pam as Consumer co-chair, Sherry as co-Treasurer, Doug as Consumer co-secretary, Sharon as Provider co-secretary, all Fairfax Co?), now over six months ago, while money is diverted to provider control... Consumer directed indeed...
And two people on the nominating committee are candidates, which seems like the appearance of a conflict IMO, but I'm not a lawyer, just someone who has been active from the beginning of the project, proposing the website (NOT $50k/year of state money to be diverted to Network of Care, a shelved provider project with little to no consumer input, 'but you can create a website with it', but doesn't actually create the consumer run program sites in addition to being an offensive insult to the consumer directed process???) into the state funded proposal and probably attended more open general meetings than anyone else, as I don't get paid nor 'vacations', which is one of the main objection of David O'Brien, creating positions that one never gets hired to do, basically consumer slavery...
Partial Summary: Forget LoseVote machines, Florida recounts and process, now that the money may be outside our control, historically, then the consumers can have a say...
Think Obama/ Clinton/ Edwards and McCain/Pailin is interesting news, stay tuned, as 'our own road kill is on the menu', or try 'eating our own dog food'...
Partial Summary: The FrontPage has well over 1000 hits, not counting subpages and time before pbwiki.com added plugins. Hard to verify given the long noted statistics disappearances, but to the best of my knowledge, correct, at least for a 'vanity press' ;-}...
Partial Summary: Third annual VOCAL Network conference, this time in Harrisonburg, VA (JMU), starts with board elections, gets around to state hospital/Institute memorials, other 'shit' ;-}, DoubleTrouble, and more...
Partial Summary: Hospital/ Institute does it again, but what about consumers? Again, not participating to the fullest, but lectured at, and considered dogs instead of independent cats and humans. 'fer real.
Partial Summary: Executives in the Steering Committee ignore all collaboration and take matters and more consumer money into their own hands...
Partial Summary: Late notice on a two day Recovery Conference in Prince William turns out to be RRWG funded... Second Day is more local consumer, PWDIC, and more...
Partial Summary: You get to have feedback courtesy of a newer feature of pbwiki.com, Contact The Wiki Owner below, but with some limitations and safeguards...
Partial Summary: Anniversary of SH Cho shootings at Virginia Tech including some continuing local issues?
Partial Summary: April Fools, Housing under Bridges, in draft form. Edited and printed in StreetSense at www.streetsense.org/archives/2008/040208issue.pdf on top of page 5... This was to be front page material for an inaugural issue of NoVAPeers 2.0 in print, but never got much of what was needed...
Partial Summary: Noting the composition of the ExecutingCommittee is mostly CSB, paid staff, or related to board members and other conflicts...
Partial Summary: Threats of Slander / Libel explored in relation to MH Recovery in NoVA and this pbwiki...
Partial Summary: What's wrong with this system?

currently pondering issues of 'False hope is worse than no hope...' and the medical model's
concept of 'do no harm' as people are asked their dreams and wondering if they
don't get realized then what happens? And more historically, when exactly
did caring leave the health care industry?

NoVAPeers hosting fees
The $50 [$100-200?] pbwiki hosting fees came due again this year, but NAMI-PW nor another entitiy did not come forward to contribute, so this pbwiki is now the free version. That means that file space went to the 10 MB (over 200 MB over, so no new files until the fee is paid), many pbwiki features were lost... Note: Page Counters mysteriously went to zero in the summer before hosting fees, when were around 400 for this home page after the pbwiki.com added # visitors plugins....
After approximately 10 months of being ignored, and after the first year money was spent elsewhere, the executing committee decided to actually put the website on the meeting agenda. The Summer2007WebsiteStatusEmail replied to that action as well as a few others. The next RRWG meeting attended, this email was referenced, but the executing committee didn't even remember it, nor did it make it in the minutes as a status report... More business as usual, afaict...

formatting of this FrontPage is bad, as trying to get table of contents to show a menu like appearance, but limited nesting level to two of three... different than an outlining tool with content blocks below headers...

Jerry changed the CSS style sheet of the PBWiki, which may cause some surprise amongst returning visitors. This also indicates some changes on the new upgrade from the Free PBWiki. More news to follow as it develops...

I moved Ray's notice to top (like an EXTRA?, so as not to confuse the message authors, but noted that I probably interrupted the presentation in the middle of the last face to face meeting...
Glad others are using the wiki!

I didn't think it was my job to post the minutes. I have posted the 2006-09-11 minutes I worked on today. It would help me to have a copy of my tasking. Yes, I realize it's my fault for not having it. But who among us does not contradict themselves on occasion.
