Introduction/Definition/etc
On April 1, as the Seasonal Shelters close for the season,
and maybe some permanently, we consider how people would get out...
Can't take much on a bus...
Can't afford a cab, like they would show...
Can't bike the stuff out? Or can you?
How many trips would it take to do a locker?
Bags on a bike?
There is a limit before you fall over...
And how to safely put those on a couple of inflated tubes?
How many trips for an apartment?
But environmentally conscious, and most people think bikes are recreation,
and not taken seriously, certainly larger vehicles don't think we get respect,
any confrontation between two wheels and four or more (16???) and
the two wheel loses, though some are trying to change the laws,
usually there isn't much repercussions for killing a human on two wheels,
though Maryland may be trying to increase the penalty,
basically manslaughter with a vehicle instead of another weapon,
careless, and reckless...
In Europe, apparently, the driver of a car/ bus/ etc is assumed
to be at fault unless proven otherwise, and the bikers don't wear helmets
as much, and there are better bike facilities, lanes, separate, but equal???
Or maybe all of EU is not the same, AutoBahn (sp?) probably doesn't allow bikes,
non motorized, like Interstates in the USA...
Who knows? Who can afford to go to EU anyway?
Or Florida? Maybe Florida Avenue???
Body
As a low income person, transportation is a B****,
MetroAccess sent a taxi that ran over my feet, breaking a toe, and the cab driver denied
he did it (heard he got fired, but not sure), Metro has been hiding risks, and rides,
frankly (try getting somewhere on Rail on the weekends, we're doing construction
for your safety, what about our convenience? Oh, that's for weekday riders,
rush hour only, when more frequent trains, safety in numbers?)
Buses have people hanging around the stops, sometimes gang,
sometimes drug, maybe both..
So try two wheels, Bicycles, which people think are dangerous,
but don't really consider cars/ buses/ public transit is dangerous too...
And a car (4 Wheels), insurance, etc is dangerous too,
expensive, and not really in the means of most disabled and therefore poor people...
And that's without the racial and other profiling by law enforcement and others...
But it is a double standard, if you don't own a car, can't get to the places,
you know where mere pedestrians aren't allowed, gated communities like
McLean (Temple Grandin speaks later today at McLean Bible Church,
at an Accessibility Summit and associated opening of Jill's House,
a respite care for caregivers, or whatever, because can't get there,
FULL, but still advertising it...) Oh, and how would most disabled people
afford the conference fees? Much less the transportation to and from
McLean, remember Accessible??? So "No Room At The Inn"
Very Christian...
Maybe we all need adult trikes, those beach cruisers that older people
carry groceries on, no to little risk of falling over like a two wheeled
vehicle, add a little basket, and you have every person's dream...
Now consider the neighborhoods many poor live in,
and you are out and exposed to the elements, so to speak...
Route 1 South of Alexandria, a 45 MPH 3-5 lane highway,
State highway, where the recent accidents at Telegraph and Fairfax Parkway,
multiple deaths, then they put in the sidewalk on the South Side of Beacon Hill
by the Catholic Church and Bell Center?
Or PediCab? Doesn't run during rush hour, so little to no use for most people,
even if they want to be green and possibly socially conscious, not a rickshaw (sp?)
as the poor young people with more energy than money, most are playing basketball
and video games instead of making money, the likelihood of a scholarship
or becoming a Pro BasketBall or FootBall or any other sports star are little,
but you learn something doing sports, team sports, and then you may
be recruited for the military, and consider how that's going...
Gas prices going to $4 / gallon and above,
with no end in sight, but think ahead and maybe that
is cheaper than a hospital stay or death given the safety
of many low income neighborhoods, on major roads,
maybe on bus routes, a $4 public transit ride, without changing
from Bus to Rail, no parking, etc, and it costs just to get around...
Sometimes painfully costly...
And this post was going to be funny, go figure...
Up in the middle of the night, and well, just not in a good mood
on April Fool's Day, see http://mail.google.com/motion
if you want a laugh, they are laughing to the bank...
Let's Move people, as Mrs. Obama would probably say,
but don't see them walking much,
helipad out in the back lawn, next to the garden?
And all the White House staff eats out of the garden/farm?
All the time? Or is there canning involved?
Or is it just for show? How do people eat off season,
say fruits and vegetables? And healthy stuff?
Flown in from Warmer Places? Below the equator?
Local foods indeed...
Come to think of it, I'm hungry, but don't have much of anything
to eat...
