Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act of July 26, 1990,

and now 19 years later how far have we come?   Don't know how

it was, but highlighting the President Obama's statement,

and personally looking at some of what hasn't trickled down?

ANNIVERSARY OF THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT, 2009

- - - - - - -

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

Today we celebrate the 19th anniversary of the enactment of the historic Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Signed into law on July 26, 1990, this landmark legislation established a clear mandate against discrimination on the basis of disability so that people with disabilities would have an equal opportunity to achieve the American Dream.

Our Nation is once again poised to make history for people with disabilities. I am proud to announce that the United States will sign the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in New York on December 13, 2006. The Convention is the first new human rights convention of the 21st century adopted by the United Nations, and it represents a paradigm shift in protecting the human rights of 650 million people with disabilities worldwide. We proudly join the international community in further advancing the rights of people with disabilities.

As we reflect upon the past and look toward a brighter future, we recognize that our country has made great progress. More than ever before, Americans with disabilities enjoy greater access to technology and economic self-sufficiency. More communities are accessible, more children with disabilities learn alongside their peers, and more employers recognize the capabilities of people with disabilities.

Despite these achievements, much work remains to be done. People with disabilities far too often lack the choice to live in communities of their choosing; their unemployment rate is much higher than those without disabilities; they are much likelier to live in poverty; health care is out of reach for too many; and too many children with disabilities are denied a world-class education.

My Administration has met these challenges head-on. We have launched the "Year of Community Living" to help people with disabilities live wherever they choose. We have nearly doubled the funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. I was proud to sign the groundbreaking Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Act and the Children's Health Insurance Reauthorization Act, which provides health insurance to millions of additional children. I also lifted the ban on stem cell more research. These measures demonstrate our commitment to leveling the playing field for every person with a disability. My Administration will not rest on these accomplishments, and we will continue to focus on improving the lives of people with disabilities. I encourage States, localities, and communities across the country to cultivate an environment in which the 54 million Americans living with a disability are valued and respected.

Americans have repeatedly affirmed the importance of protecting the human rights and dignity of every member of this great country. Through the steps we have taken, we will continue to build on the ADA and demonstrate our ongoing commitment to promoting, protecting, and ensuring the full enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by people with disabilities.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim July 26, 2009, as the Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. I call on Americans across our country to celebrate the progress we have made in protecting the civil rights of people with disabilities and to recognize the step forward we make with the signing of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Inspired by the advances of the last 19 years, let us commit to greater achievements in the years ahead.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fourth day of July, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.

BARACK OBAMA

Conclusion

Summary of personal experience or similar

From a federal email list, in case you missed it and weren't invited to the party.

Interesting where the mistake made on stem cell research, some typo or something,

missing a word, but still better writing than most of mine (as evidenced by most

stuff here on NoVAPeers, originally meaning/ playing with words,

no VA Peer specialists, now after VA Tech, No states to replicate the Tech Tragedy,

and other losses [of friends] locally....

The official statement started with so much progress, then how much left to be done.

including United Nations' Declaration may be moving forward.

Like the 'not able to live where we choose' or similar (paragraph 4, but

see JerrySpaceIdea proposal idea, probably not funded or stolen by providers,

40 acres and a mule equivalent lie?? and no real say/ voice),

Poverty is still an issue, we mental health types are the poorest of the disabilities

(according to VOCALNetworkConf2008 African American keynote lawyer)

even after 5 years of developing programs for and with consumers, my  personal

resources have dwindled (didn't Jackie McKinney mention making good consulting money,

4+? years ago, never repeated?), providers cutting even consumer recommended

amounts of stipends in half, and probably now timed out, [BUT WE HAD LEFT OVER MONEY!!??)...

[Assistive] Tech mentioned, but now my little green kid poverty in least developed countries

machine (OLPC XO) is toast (even the screen gone bad after years of commuting, low

cost netbook category initiator and my original notebook computer bought with OOOFC

startup money from working in meetings, also bad (battery, heavy, OS inadvertently wiped),

and HackerSpace idea not funded to spread tech to other Virginia MH, not socially accepted

in mainstream HacDC.org (actually asked not to go there, deleted the PovertyProject

and upstairs, no elevator), no car to get there and $50 / month too steep for

disability amount of income, I have to support my eating, transportation and

now electronics habit(s) for mood and to not rot away (read warehoused)

in subsidized apartment where I can't sleep because of neighbors and

an apartment design problem, but nothing can be done...

But Obama and Biden got good subsidized houses/ mansions,

on 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and up in NW with yards, guards, secret service,

lots of pomp and circumstance, and didn't invite us to the party?

Politically, when things are bad politically,

though this anniversary is going on 200 days into his new term,

as I wrote on his morning (or mourning?) after election day,

published in StreetSense, RacismAnonymous,

FusionImprobableattheKennedyCenter, MickeyMouseIsARegisteredRepublican,

StElizabethsSummerConcertSeries, even DCDMHItsNotOurPolicy ,

TheseHallowedHalls + GottaGoNowWhat ? to final PatrickAsSaint)

'we will see what he can do', for his kids, wife,

grandmother, and the rest of us, non Harvard educated, non lawyers,

lucky to do Community College, which his health care reform town hall meeting

(or is it insurance payoff like medicare Part D? not Dental,

as we get older and $3k bills when live extremely low income levels

almost kill me, and dental schools disrespect and exploit,

pulling instead of saving teeth, broken after some excon bangs me out of a

writer's group and page I mostly created and ran / sustained for over a year),

and Howard Univeristy doesn't host a Tavistock based Diversity Conference

this year , he / we won, must be no diveristy issues anymore,

since election, (oops,  Mr. Gates, not not Bill $$$, nor Intelligence,

but Cambridge buddy, harrasssed by police, no apologies

necessary, as it's business as usual, despite the color of the President's

skin, historical for one royalty family, as it might be...)

But I rant, am clinically depressed, disabled, and not getting out much anymore,

as some think I live well, by appearances, when you don't consider no sound proofing,

so hear every footstep from upstairs and showering/ pipe flushing noises

obsurdly [military] early and late, worse than any basement (a design issue),

but maybe it's just me, nice amenities, even a pool, tanning salon, weight room (rarely use)

but when get out, get to bike, fight 5-10 lanes of 45 mile per hour traffic,

and try to avoid the Housing Under Bridges HighwayMessVolume2Issue1,

leaping point, and we bikers can't use the new Wilson Bridge pedestrian/ bike lane

late at night, but they don't restrict cars to only traveling certain times of day,

and police have yet another reason to stop and harrass us baggy

looking poor disabled people, of whatever color/ race/ ethnicity...

So good job, Obama, glad You are having fun,

keeping your promises and living the American dream,

but it's not trickling down to us mere mortals...
