Click above [already here] for brief mentions of
The Soloist movie,
PBS's The Released
and "a cry for help" shows
plus a start on
Johns Hopkins Mood Symposium
with nursing staff and security guard as a
[un]welcoming committee...
More possibly to follow, if 'I get a round to it'...

Body
For those not watching tv or movies recently,
TheSoloist is out in theatres, including a schizophrenic
(doesn't like being called that) homeless former Julliard
musician named Nathaniel Ayers? starring Jamie Foxx,
and some other famous guy I'm blocking on his name,
[Robert Downey Jr] but has been in the tabloids...
Anyway it is also a book and features the press/ media
portrayal of homelessness and MH, so might be worth a look.
I'll probably review it later...
PBS has also been active with "TheReleased"
about mental health and the criminal justice system,
and mostly non existent services following discharge.
Probably not a surpise to many of us, but thought
they presented the facts, minus the fact that lots
of people who have MH issues and labels
are not involved in the legal system so might
want to reiterate that...
PBS also did "acryforhelp" about teen suicide
and mental health in high schools bordering to college.
NAMI-NJ is highlighted as well as some programs
like online STEP, Got Character? days, and
Hamilton High School (where Bush the second
signed No Child Left Behind) plus some other schools.
Might write about this, as ties into Cho (called the 9/11 of
school incidnets) and my continued worries
of our younger people...
Also, Johns Hopkins had their 23rd Annual Mood Disorder
Symposium 23rdMoodSymposium where I was introduced to their unpublished
'no cameras' policy, two+ nurses trying to enforce house rules
claiming HIPAA and a security guard also reiterating/ explaining
policy. Not the welcome I would have hoped on something
that took me years to get to actually participate in,
and was looking forward to but that spoiled it for me,
but not that different than other hospital/ provider
environments [it was training not on a ward, so not expected],
and people wonder why consumers/
survivors/ ex-patients don't want to go to hospitals...
Must be some 'good guy' (MDs in White Coat uniforms)
and 'bad women' (nurses, security, etc) arrangement...
More on this likely too (there were good things like
InterPersonalTherapy, KayJamisonsLowell, FamilyTalks
and ArtistTalks, but I'm a little overwhelmed
at the moment and not even a high school nor college
student facing exams, prom, little to no future for jobs, etc,
but some dyslexic deprived of his assistive recording devices
and publishing outlet (WWFFWG) on a half day 5 hour
$85 continuing medical education
public grand rounds like thingie series
when consumer conferences like VOCAL
are $70 with scholarship for ~3 days residental...
Alternatives, a federal conference is coming up
and most SAMHSA consumer conferences
list local support groups like DBSAlliance.org
instead of the defunct classic DRADA.

P.S. people are calling for my removal as
co-chair in private communication for what
I write here, but seem to have lost the meaning
of "FREE SPEECH". We never discussed boundaries
on the RRWG info and it's probably not even documented
in the minutes that I brought it up as well as so many other
contributions over the last 3 - 7 years since starting
organizing drop in center development in Fairfaix County
following up on work by LMEC's proposal disputes
with county government. and other advocates efforts.
This spun off onto the RRWG state proposal and
leaving CWC.to help distribute the drop in center
knowledge base and philosophy regionally...
Conclusion
No good deed goes unpunished...
Some people are just haters, internal
and external, and maybe I'm glad we don't
have money to fight bitterly over and more people
possibly die over the conflicts anymore..
Not that I got any money over 3 years work briefly
described here on NoVAPeers.pbworks.com...
And for the record, consumers don't get 'vacations',
it's a 24/7 'job' with few benefits and respite...
