Introduction/Definition/etc

In personal response to a debate on the C/S/X naming of the

Consumer Survivor eXpatient movement on a local

advocacy list...

Unfortunately, the movement has issues in becoming

'consumer providers' as well.  Say you spent 10+ years

studying part time the clinical psychology, amongst

trying to be better, healthier and just surviving,

not yet thriving, and what you were taught was to

cover up your own diagnosis, and treat people

how you would not want to be treated?

Say that success in that us and them situation

was something that you did not see as success,

personally and / or professionally, so you

stop doing that goal and then end up goal-less,

futher marginalized and isolated, lost in the

mainstream of hatred and ignorance...

Along comes the drop in center developments,

a place where you can hang out like in waiting

rooms, but not wating for mistreatment and abuse

then the peer counselor/ peer specialist

title and movement.   You provide what experience

from your classes, being taught to treat people

that way, and get rejected in the other side...

Then you see that the community still wants to

fight amongst themselves over names, we don't

all have the same MH experience, some positive

and consider themselves consumers, along with

the rights of getting good services,

available accessible  services, and

some bad services,  that need to

be dealt with, and protested, harmed by bad

practices and people who like hurting others,

instead of helping them, and you lose friends

and colleagues, com-patriots and comrades

in the fight for freedom, for everyone, not just

the 'system' and the majority, until we are old

and nobody cares what we have to say,

and stop calling us the wrong name,

as is in my records Gerry, for about 10

years, despite my protests, that is my

father, not me, Jerry, and W. signifying

that I am partially anonymous, a tradition

from another recovery movement that

places principles over personalities

and unity and responsiblity, as waking up

early for MH services was not an option,

in a shelter where residents wanted

to stay up all night and talk, and are probably

still in that system, if still alive instead of

changing, growing and trying to give back...

Drop in centers for me are like the 12 step

clubs that stay open late after the 9-5 MH

provider programs go home to their families

and kids, paid to try to force people into the

mold, the square peg and the round hole,

basically the after school program, or detention

if you are doing the late shift... ;-}

This concludes this morning sharing and

therapeutic writing, little name calling,

but a hope that we can all get along...
