Like a lot of things, Disaster has many meanings...

 

Body

 

NaturalDisasters

 

Acts of God, as they say in Insurance, but Mother Nature, can and is a B****, at times...

It's not all cute fluffy little Bunny Rabbits and Budding Flowers in early Spring Time, people...

 

EarthQuake

 

We had one in Mineral, VA near one of our nuclear power plants and some things were affected...

The well for water was affected in nearby TwinOaks (Louisa, VA),

where the Community Conference was held for years,

and better pumping and possible redrilling was required... 

Flow levels/ volume and maybe some other stuff...

Not sure if drilling goes wider and pours concrete down, or just metal pipes, might have to look into that,

and how far down the water table actually is in some areas...

Further North and Out West, the Fracking might have damaged he water table, and basically created a chemical wasteland, in the IronErRustBelt...

 

Even in the DC area, we woke/ were up for a shaking,

but no real policy for checking the soundness of buildings,

and better yet building them to withstand earthquakes,

as the Eastern Seaboard isn't that different than the West Coast,

as far as probability, or maybe it's just magnitude, iirc...

Getting out, and learning that aftershakes happen too, so that things don't fall on you, or out from under you...

Shelter in place, is sometimes near pipes, like the tub, and sleeping there if things crash around you, tile, curtain rods, shower curtains/ liners, pesticide and stuff in walls, etc... 

Plus, if you are hiding in the tub, where are you storing your quick thinking emergency water?

Or do you plan to buy it, with everyone else? 

If power goes out, pumps go out too, so even flushing became an issue for a longer outage,

in an earlier jurisdiction that lost power regularly, iirc...

 

Weather

 

Extremes of Weather shows us who/what is really boss, in the long run...

Think overpopulation, agressive farming, world domination and the Mayan / Incas...

 

 

Flood

 

Global climate change is one part of it, as is building on low lands, or low country,

kind of like trailer parks near streams, rivers, hurricane alley, etc...

 

Hurricane

 

They happen, and near the water may be more affected...

But transportation and other supply lines can be affected, like boating, trucking, trains, etc,

all seem to depend upon good weather too...

 

As does egress out of the affected area, think coastal emergency routes, and lines,

as hundreds of thousands of people, or more, decide to leave the beach at the same time... 

And you think holiday traffic is bad...

 

Tornado

 

Out West, more often perhaps, but the DC area had some, in Maryland, IIRC,

and an internet and/or paper library search may find more...

 

Emergency alerts, the only one I've seen recently was an Amber Alert, and I got a photo of the screen,

it was so surprising, and different, so that I wanted a record of it...

 

Broadcast TV may be different, than cable, and easier to target specific areas, instead of larger areas, like a whole state...  TriState/ DC included, and other regaional issues may exist, in upgrading that notificatino service. 

 

BTW, TracFone has an emergency app, but nothing ever shows on it,

and no way to say where you are based without location service?, etc..

 

I've suggested one for school, and Mesh Networking when things go down, but nothing much comes of it,

maybe Byzantine project (see HacDC, etc) can help with that, for comms while in a state of emergency...

 

As a monopoly, the contract with cable megacompanies is done with the jurisdiction, so a county in a state, may have one, but home owners associations and other policies may prevent people from putting up satellite dishes, say on balconies, roofes, etc maybe only in potted plant type containers, say with poured concrete, which could then become a projectile like most lawn furniture, plants, etc...

 

Radio is another way, but many don't really do much,iirc, codes, like code orange,threat levels, and other stuff, soon became ignored, as people tired of changing their behavior on a terrorist remote possibility...

 

Ham Radio may be another option, and drones might need a licensed Ham Operator/Technician for some things...

 

Besides, many things are YouTubeRed, and stored libraries of songs, and media,

say for kids of their favorite shows downloaded with DRM and expire in a certain time...

 

If your device has a clock, and you cannot set it, you might be in for some problems, especially like Y2K,

and other net time got hacked problems...

 

Heat

 

Heat waves are fairly well known, except, maybe in Alaska, but there too, above freezing, could be considered warm...

 

HyperThermia, instead of HypoThermia exist.

 

 

Cold

 

HypoThermia, having gas in your car, having alternative heat, cooking and other possibilities,

was considered more in the early years, say delivery of a tank of oil for a furnace,

but having the money to do that and clear passable roads that would accommodate,

and the size (and location(s)) of the tank(s)...

 

Emergency generators for Hospitals, DataCenters, and other 24x7x365+/-1 facilities

might already have thought of most of this...

 

Going Solar, sounds good, but it takes Capital, and/or Community Action for making Solar Farms,

which put the solar panels somewhere where apartment dwellers,

those living under the cover of the trees/canopy,

and elsewhere, can get the power to them, somehow, possibly on the local grid, maybe even redundantly...

 

WinterStorm

 

Coming up on that time of year again, December 21 is official winter start date, iirc, and many plan ahead,

for things like getting a government supplies snow plow for community use,

and you may have had to apply already, iirc...

 

Hardware stores try to get things delivered and in for the season early,

instead of waiting until the last minute and shortages... 

Sales sometimes give an indication of a seasons change, with pre seasonal sales sometimes,

but post season likely... Buying discounted shorts in fall and/or winter, sometimes happen...

Traveling abroad, 

South of the Border, Australia, etc, it might help to have things in the off season...

Or if considered a Rich American, buy stuff as you need it, assuming it is for sale to people like you...

And not at exhorbinately high prices...

Many Americans may need to learn to haggle...

 

Seasonal sales of Halloween Candy is sometimes fun,

so I have all the sugar problems that the mainstream society does as well, just slightly delayed

and over handled...

 

After Easter sales, summer clearance, and other stuff like Bike Rental bikes selling after the normal season ends, sometimes brings bargains, say for those that still ride, all year around...

speaks somewhat to the likely Republican Guard security forces being part of the problems,

not the solution...

 

Domestic terrorism, a term thrown around a lot, but there are riots, and other problems, that happen too,

and have happened in my lifetime...  Oklahoma City Bombing, I spent way too much time watching the devastation on TV, recently unemployed and becoming more suicidal, then homeless...

 

The L.A. Riots following the Rodney King Beatings then court,

and more modern problems, Ferguson, Missouri, police discrimination actions...

Riots in Baltimore, Maryland after more police discrimination/violence

and further down south (not Birmingham? but Charlotte?...) even with a Democratic President...

 

Various cities including London, England,

Paris/Nice, France,

Brussels, Belgium,

overseas embassy problems, etc...

 

All international, but also the Boston Marathon bombing, and other problems that

we pretend not to really know about, happened, and we ignore, as changing our lifestyle,

say away from gas guzzling SUVs to ManBearPig type South Park Gore'esque places

isn't really that different than outrageous comedy of Bart on the Simpsons, back in my era...

Financial

 

Sequestration and other problems of a financial nature happen,

those with portfolios may know what that means,

but most are just why is Government closed? 

Oh, Veteran's Day... Columbus Day, and some other holidays that are traded for Thanksgiving+1 day,

and semi official nature, like InAuguration Day, government exists, except in DC, where it is transition time... 

 

And between party changes in the President, and defense and support contracts and many other things

may change with drastically different fiscally conservative policies...

 

Checks and Balances of Power may happen, as a Democratic President came in and the economy tanked,

likely from previous administration's policies, and war efforts, but National Debt and the Debt Ceiling,

is no joke, and might come crashing down, see ChickenLittle's 'The Sky is Falling'...

 

The Great Depression, and other Stock Market Crashes happen, and might happen again,

with One Percenters thinking they are the only ones that matter...

 

Compare and Contrast to Roots MiniSeries Chicken George from the 1970's...

Some young people may have only lived in a Democratic President era  (say around 8 years old,

but +/- some years where politics is largely meaningless and being bottle fed and potty training is King ),

but others may have more life experience based on being Dinosaurs (Yes, some were around when the purple Barney as a sickening song first run...)...

 

Rumor has it, VMHCA (Virginia Mental Health Consumers Association) was dismantled during one

Republican administration in Virginia, and VOCAL had to be the Phoenix (Mythical Rebirth) of it...

 

De-Institutionalization was one policy with surges creating some of the first Homeless Shelters

and lack of Asylums, and look how that grew into our streets, hospital ERs, Parks, morgues and elsewhere...

 

Reaganomics aka Trickle Down Economics (if the Rich People are happy

then the people they care about will be taken care of, in theory, unless, of course,

all they care about is themselves: See RobberBarons, then Carnegie, Mellon, Rockefeller,

and other foundations, but not helping much in their lifetime(s)? ) has probably been disproven, afaict...

 

Tracfone's Carlos 'Slim' topped one of the richest people in the World trading places the likes of Bill Gates, Berkshire Hathaway? (Guy out MidWest, name blocking, add later? or exercise left for the others? Hint: Buffet, but no not Jimmy, think Warren Commission and MaCarthy Era), and other One Percenters,

but I did seem to get 500 minutes, maybe from what was written, SLWStealsMinutes2016

so like Bush, Palin and others, maybe its good for journalistic endeavors, to write about the stuff that happens as the current pendulum swing goes Right instead of Left...

 

Discussion

 

So if you thought a Woman was going to be president, maybe it takes a little while longer, which happened first Civil Rights or Sufferage?

 

And how many decades/ centuries is it after the Civil War, supposedly about slavery, and we still have discrimination (BeerGate, police events in Missouri, day to day comments, etc)?

 

Now, say 50 years after ADA, is that all that has happened, some curb cutouts, elevators, separate but equal entrances and SpeechLess?
