Introduction/Definition/etc

Drop is the Brand of a BlueTooth connected

food scale bought on clearance from MicroCenter

which has sold things that don't work before,

like Activity Monitors...

Body

Original Text

So took a chance on an approximately $15 clearance

food scale at MicroCenter, wtih another bad buying

problem of HeartBleed where cashiers need

you to say your name, and then they confirm your

address, to get you in their database,

even if paying cash which any stranger

plus their attitude, is simply criminal

especially if you have had clearance

and they seem like they may not even be

citizens, or working on VISAs/ trying to get

citizenship...

So for the price of a movie, i rationalized to myself

and outloud, that i would try a BlueTooth enabled

scale, this not having a display at all,

just an LED when powering on,

and it turns out takes an odd battery

a CR2477 which is not readily available

much of anywhere, having to go to a

battery store, seemed from their website

they had it listed, but don't carry it,

and would have to send for it,

and wanted phone number, then address

for get in 3 days, and a week after promised date

and say 4 trips later to the po box

go back to the store, to find out they

mailed to the store instead and didn't even

call to say it was in, seemingly deliberately...

So looking up the scale on line,

the box says iOS which is Apple,

but a website mentioned that you

need the latest firmware, so maybe

using someone's Apple iPad only,

my old iPhone would not work

size of the screen seems to matter,

as will see later...

Location is required

looking on the website

automated/ connected cooking is

on it's way, a ThermoMixer device

does heating and mixing together

and Drop does talking to the device

part of their Kitchen OS

and the app does Recipes,

from the net, you select it

and choose to make it,

and it tells you to weigh things,

so not the freeform get the numbers

into say a spreadsheet to keep from typing

and/or the piles of index cards i've done for over

a year, and at several per day, 365 days

per year, is adding up to a big box,

scanning and/or entry overload

kind of like packaging foods,

UPC codes nutritional information

hopefully OpenFoodFacts

would have that info, but for what i

use/ have it doesn't seem to have much

and then i don't have control of the data,

either enter so much stuff myself,

and/or not have it,

They have a Closed Beta

of a Creator which you can make your own

recipes, but they want/ require applying

and want a photo and has not taken what

i've added a photo of the Drop scale

in box on top of the CVS predecessor

if i could get this working, at all,

so wondering the possible problems,

besides they don't send and can't find the

Beta .apk file, gPlay doesn't find much,

Drop is a common word, and only the recipe

app is found, so no help there...

Two possibles, the firmware,

the battery tested OK,

on a volt meter,

someone probably set a password,

going to the BlueTooth controls and it

wants a password, which i don't know,

the sales guy enjoying trying to sell the

extra protection, if it doesn't work

originally $100 scale, sitting around forever,

and likely doesn't work, locked out by BlueTooth

password, might have to do something about that,

the company may have a reset option,

finding an iPad and installing the app,

get and make sure the firmware is not it,

What Can Be Found?

lots of things to spend money on

first and foremost is another scale,

given likely sold a bad one,

locked BlueTooth,

assuming battery is OK

now two more into paying for something

not working, yet, if at all...

MicroCenter no longer lists selling the Drop

scale, btw, they have two other scales

a KingWin 500 gram small high precision one

seems like weighing  rings for melting down to gold,

is the main use, there, but can count stuff like coins,

say a roll of quarters, and known weight,

does the math of how many,

then multiple for dollars, i guess...

That takes 3? AAA batteries which Toys R Us

i bought so many for

WowWeeToys2017

TargettedWowWeeAccessories2017

remotes some years back,

and Toys R Us went belly up....

What Can Not Be Found?

How To Analyze?

Assumptions

weighing food helps

knowing like a baker how much flour/

baking soda, spices, etc

may help...

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

ThermoMix or similar named device is interesting

but combing the stand mixer and a heating

plus stirring mechanism like a BreadMaker

and/or IceCreamMachine

going cold,

one has a chopping type food processor,

Ovens

Ovens2019

some new big ones are IOT

InterNetOfThings/ connected

BlueTooth/WiFi whichever

and can preheat, set cooking times,

check temp, etc...

But not there yet, big and expensive

thing presumably for someone who doesn't

follow recipes, which may be me,

but freeforming my making stuff

and doesn't help at least with the such

rich stuff found in Recipes,

i'd have to buy this that and the other

in order to try a recipe with that app...

A thought exercise about how to cook,

say oatmeal in an automated way,

besides the pressure cooker

set and forget, leaves it on keep warm

for a few hours, and closed device

and not open flame so might be safer

than say falling asleep during a long

cooking time, or say run out to get something,

water, ingredients, postal mail,

fire alarms, etc...

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

What automation do you see in your future?

Are the days gone of worried about your job

being automated, now it's accepting a robotic

like cooking device, when you might be able

to do some of that yourself, with simple

old school cooking methods...
