Introduction/Definition/etc
A Chinese copy of the GoPro,
it seems, including packaging,
but some twists, 4k-ish resolution,
mounts claimed to be GoPro compatible
(in other's reviews) but didn't work on the
chestie mount, for me, and some other
issues like Location required for the app,
with wifi, no BlueTooth, and the other
H9 models:
R Remote
SE inexpensive version,
plus chipset differences,
reports of knockoffs/imitations of the EKENs,
plus firmware bricking and other stuff,
like SJCAM or similar battery compatibility,
(only 1050 mAH, but another included in
my packaging, a wall brick mentioned but
missing though) and other stuff
to be considered...

Original Text
Well, technology advances,
the GoPro empire, likely started a lot of all
this action camera stuff (I have 2 of those
Hero now considered 1's, it's up to 6 now,
and showing their ages with 3D case going,
latch half broken using rubber bands,
chestie basically used up, bra like stretchiness
in the elastic, and other problems of years of
almost daily use, only replaced once in 5-7 years
now, difficult to find replacements, eBay,
and other problems between ~$40
and $200 or so for the classic 3D case,
before the higher priced thru plugs, rumored
only two of the six models would even do 3D,
I never really did, didn't fit menus on the netbook's
small screens of the time, and other problems,
of storage, and so many coded settings
(decoded somewhat by the LCD backpack),
etc...
At ~$40 the H9 was worth considering,
and tried one, for a day or so, and went
back for a second, likely a sale price
saving a bit, as even the same models
had different prices, maybe the different
chipsets, as the sales guy hanging
around the second visit, mentioned
the different sku or similar numbers,
one tagged with MicroCenter, the other
just on the box, and I allowed him
to add his commission tag
(no real harm to me, and not entirely
obnoxious like some sales and cashier
people there...)
Ran it for a parts of a day,
the battery went out in about an hour
of heavy use, so I rigged up an auxiliary
power brick to the bar end of the
bicycle and was able to run it
on the way back, depleting both
battery and brick, about the time
I finished 35 or so miles, the way
back was set on 3 still bursts,
sampling the intersections, and
anything different and/or interesting,
but mostly forward, even moving
the mount, not a pan and zoom option,
as it's basically feels like the new
camera would fall off the mount
each time I adjust it, right or left
locking screw keeping it on,
especially while underway,
stopping several times
even on roads, with traffic,
to adjust, tighten
and make it face the direction,
mostly forward, that I intend...
I did turn the bike handlebars
sideways a few times, when stopped
like for scenery, at a lake, etc...
but nowhere near as easy
as wearing the GoPro Chesty with
the 3D so still bringing the wearing on
(biker flies off bike, news at 11, see
the footage, from bike and
biker perspectives... /snark),
though powering on the GoPro3D
giving display of --- or 000
(no files found when Not a new card)
pulling the battery likely (sp?) creates
another file directory non 3D L or R,
just GOPROnnn or similar pattern)
instead of finding the files and
numbers usually 999 and
whatever settings still, video, battery,
and whatever else is shown on the
GoPro Hero1's LCD front...
(EKEN H9 has No LCD on the front,
other models do, but a display on
back, and coloured LEDs
(front Blue?) not just GoPro Hero1 Red,
except H9 top...))))
The H9 controls, I'm still learning,
not entirely complicated, four? buttons
instead of GoPro's 2,
side up and down (one turns on WiFi)
and used for cycling thru menus and
in playback mode,
power and mode on the same front button
and shutter on top...
I bought the first H9 camera on Friday,
carry the new toy(ish) back un opened
thinking I'd need to take some time
with it, learn some overnight,
try early Saturday AM,
batteries mostly charged
(fabric/tampon? like tab to pull out),
new stuff to try, and learn setting up
available mounts, this time on the
handlebar / bar ends, other (non) options
include mixtures of tape on
helmet like mounts GoPro like three (3) to
two (2) prong screw in and other
short straps, etc, som are clips others
screw in 2-3 prongs even the
packaging case top might be Dremeled
to use as an extra mount option,
admittedly hacked packaging,
big suction cup like entire box top
size to make another spare,
one of the reasons for buying
a second H9 was for mounts
(and extra batteries)
for a second bicycle,
though motorcycle, if/when I get
back to that, and PedalCart and other
options (petCam?) and other stuff,
robotCam? to consider down the road,
as they say...
Searching the InterWebs, found some
on the H9 and other stuff, that seems
unreliable to maybe even competitive FUD,
a FaceBook EKEN Bricked Users Group
and links to ftp.EKEN.com or similar
website, and got a blank, maybe web
site down/ non existent for some stuff,
the FTP one a privileged, and can't
get files, some psuedo (sp?) technical
made easy type stuff, with alternating
chipset and other information,
making me wonder the credibility
of the author and site, but not a
lot else, like the ZTEMagestyProLTE2017
buy Chinese, you're screwed dude,
type mentality, not a lot of support
out there, but at $40 instead of
originally $400 for Hero 1's,
i guess saving and knockoffs
aren't entirely free (allusion to
Freedom's Not Free? on
12/7 Pearl Harbour Day?)...
Might be worth the risk, YMMV,
don't quote me, you might not
care about required Location broadcast
to foreign countries, over open WiFi,
etc, but others of us might have a
problem with that... So maybe use
the device but not the app?
Or try something else?
Similar required Location issues to
beurerDevices2017 and
not exactly anonymized
as the smart phone go back
to a Google or Apple ID account,
so not just a web address,
internet IP... But Identity,
likely trackers,
and other privacy problems...
Like discount cards, and surveys,
privacy may matter, say I see
a live deer along the trails/ and don't
want to log where that is,
much less broadcast it,
possibly saving the deer from nosy hunters,
and other privacy say of sources,
may be a problem, even without the
international aspect of it...
Time stamping is available and
I'm using it, for time of travel,
and could possibly be interpolated,
where, and when, therefore whom,
say strangers on the trail, and
sprayed, further stalked as has
happened recently and/or attacked...
A general description from higher
resolution and might be able to
match with someone else's
and/or traffic cams, game cams, etc
law / park enforcement, and/or
tracking, for safety, and security,
two difficult things to discuss
even as the gun lobby is in arms
about new legislation, like everyone
wants weapons for XMas,
a rite of passage maybe for some,
but in the city, where hunting options
are limited, likely gang violence,
stick ups, murder suicides, etc
and not protected from that much either,
'those who wear badges also
burn crosses', or similar HipHop?
lyrics...
Even the Olympics are getting press,
Russia not having a team, under
the Olympics flag, as thought,
at first, that tyrant, Putin was assassinated,
but likely more of a rules technicality
but foreshadows Hitler and Olympics
before a World War (1 or 2?) type stuff,
and all starting by summer time...
Anniversary of Pearl Harbour coming
up (12/7) and current North Korean
nuclear & ICBM testing conflict
rather at least rhetoric is heated...
Anyways, journalism, accessibility (sp?)
and hobby use, among others
geeking out on stuff, there is a
newer 4k Raspberry Pi like device,
which as RPi3 running
Chromium on Raspbian stretch,
goes into oblivion, just trying to
upload large or many files at once,
thinking use a dedicated low end
device on hard wire, and/or wifi
to upload, say overnight, but cannot
leave unattended, had to batch up
only 20 jpgs at a time,
lest it go Page Unresponsive,
or just go out and stop displaying stuff,
even the gkrellm, and screen updates
stopping, forcing only option of a
hard power restart (or wait hours?),
risking bad shutdown and file system
corruption on the OS SD card,
and/or the camera memory card,
MicroSDs for RPi3 and H9,
where Hero1 was SD, the copy
of that form factor was smaller,
buying MicroSD with an adapter
the better of two worlds,
use in either, and you can
write protect notch/switch
with the adapter/sled,
no way with MicroSD, afaict,
YMMV...
So ran out the memory card
in first full day with the H9,
even with full speed/resolution
on the first hour, and still bursts
on the way back, three (3) or so
hours of commuting,
and some use, not stopping for
reading the manual nor even
looked for the extra battery
(wasn't packed, forgot it,
early am departure, new
mount, use patterns, trying to get
sunrise, dog ate my homework
like excuses, etc...)
So a license plate at a distance
with 4k-ish interpolated,
might be more possible,
given certain conditions of
light, angles, etc, and street signs,
store hours, etc more mundane
uses, and just clarity, the trail/
road, missing parts, tools, sockets,
adapters, screws, glass, other debris,
etc while bouncing around,
some vibration noticed
(higher end models have Image Stabilization),
but the mount get some
front shock on a mountain bike
gets some other, the wedge rubbery
gripper (shim?) on the inside of the
handlebar/tube mount helps, afaict,
compressible locking nuts might help
in keeping it tight, washers, neoprene,
and other adjustments needed,
a pan and tilt option, not just straight
ahead for hours (BORING!) but the
handlebar turns some, into where
I'm intending on going, perhaps a
less dizzy feeling than helmet mount,
and I already have a headlight up there,
and bashed that into almost broken state
with the tree branches, etc over
the 9ish years now since the Obama
inauguration (sp?)/ purchase
timeframe, but I digress...
Using them will take some time
and further research and learning...
I would however caution novices
and seemingly seasoned bikers
and camera people, it takes some
getting used to, and becoming habit,
instead of a distraction, like car
crashes based on people fiddling
with radios, just set it to record,
even as starting out, and don't
mess with it, while underway,
and see later what you got,
or didn't got, by pulling over,
or have problems similar to
texting whiled driving,
as the display is something you
might be tempted to watch
when your attention needs to
be on the real world around
you, similar to headphone users
and walking/ biking/ driving,
an infraction, iirc...
Modified Text
What's Missing?
Lots, technical info,
availability, some webviews
said 6 available, restocking
and 1 turned into a few actually
there, and Rockville, MD store,
while far away for some
was not beyond possible for
early RPi limits, etc...
Firmware updates,
reliable sources of technical
info, comparisons that match,
H9 model seems to have
different meanings, besides
finding the R remote model,
one writeup says you cannot buy
just a remote add on later, and
reported somewhere in the
reading(s), perhaps paired
must match to the device
and find an R box,
which I can not, at this point,
in store only, not online...
I wonder about creating a remote
and linking multiple devices
over a bicycle/motorcycle/etc
setup with a dedicated recording
device with (SSD?) harddrive
for saving the "action" though
largely mundane, hoping to
eventually try moto track use
again in the future, and/or development
of the sidecar/trailer...
I am missing the power transformer
in the first one, not sure, haven't
opened box number 2 yet...
The bottom of the box is not taped,
so maybe someone going into the
new one, IDK... Better sealed
(shrinkwrapped?) packaging
instead of just a non scratchy
type messy covering over the
top clear plastic where the device
hides/is on display, GoPro style...
One photo had an international
plug shown, maybe different
in the US models? There is
an EKEN USA listed, somewhere,
but don't know much about, yet,
if ever...
What Can Be Found?
Much need for higher speed
and capacity uploads,
memory max size is 64Gig,
I haven't tried that yet,
cannot afford to right now,
two cameras and holidays,
limited disabled resources,
etc...
at $10 first household limits
(per visit) for 32 Gig MicroSD
with adapter, IPSG house
brand? Latest circular/flyer
shows the same SKU number
both ways, one limited, one not...
The house brand runs the RPi3
so far, others over the years had
failed and lost the OS and
whatever data, then no way of
loading and making another OS
(maybe Live or rescue CD?),
down on spares, laptops and
netbooks showing their ages too
etc...
What Can Not Be Found?
see above/elsewhere
How To Analyze?
Lenses
lots of different angles on these things
and issues brought up about them,
their use, manufacture, etc...
distributor
support channels
user groups
buyers protections
consumer affairs
users
technical and not so technical
elderly
gifting possibilities
I'm not in a position to
give gifts, but others might be able to,
buyer beware, and other standard
precautions, as usual...
it might work out for me, but my
use cases, having already had GoPros
may be different, and like Psych, Meds,
etc, your reactions may be different,
as different people, and needs/wants/
limitation, environments, resources, etc
Assumptions
Photography is good...
Their marketing mentions beauty,
but not something I might know
about, survival and gritty stuff,
raod debris left behind from accidents,
police presence, and roadkill,
also highly likely, than a sunrise/set
in Florida and other very rare
serene occurrences, at least for me...
Privacy is not a concern,
trail and road use is public space
so somehow rather unlimited,
between some journalism background,
admittedly homeless paper,
and blogging, generally not targeting
individuals, just accessiblity,
scenery, my safety
and my security...
Deer have protections from harm
besides just a biker along the trail(s)
and roads and blogging/ drivel,
laws, other witnesses, green lobby,
etc...
Time Limits
Like Compact Flash the
SD and other standards
will likely go old eventually,
memory sizes are fairly
Moores' Law one thing,
(maybe think 64Gig is
the new 32Gig of yesterday's
cameras?) but standards
eventually go too (HD to Blueray?)...
Cases wear out, cards decay,
contacts corrode, sweat into even
water proof cases, etc, switches
and plugs get a lot of use..
That's without out in action/ real life:
dropping, theft and loss..
Reports of Overheating and bricking
are/is maybe overblown FUD,
unless it happens to you...
Quality control is a good thing,
sample size among models
and submodels/chipsets wouldn't
hurt either...
Currently
Sample size =1, up to 3 maybe...
plus whatever I hear from others,
eventually, if ever...

Conclusion
Summary of experience or similar
More to learn and try...
Eats memory cards quickly,
uploading large files not currently
possible, even Google gets $$$
by higher res, as drive space is
quickly gone, if even take the time
to upload all of it, not just samples,
a display on the device, allows
limited live and previewing what's
captured, admittedly in 2 inch or so
screen size, skippy and blaring
speaker, as brakes up front
loud, stopping and noise
signals slowing, other non
driving issues of controls and learing
a top LED red, is at an angle,
peering above easier than
front GoPro red light,
but still not easy,
adjusting the seconds before
power is saved on display,
and when it's on and when it's
off, finding not off when I thought,
maybe turns on the display and again
for turning recording off...
Discussion
A place for feedback on the page presented
What is acceptable use?
What rules are there of recording/filming others?
In public places, along roads/ trails,
in private location(s)?
Is the blurring out faces technology
available for regular users use?
Not just Google StreetView?
