FortheLoveofScottbyJoHamilton2012

Introduction/Definition/etc

Exact title of the book is

For the Love of Scott!

by Jo Hamilton

but PBWorks probably doesn't do the Exclamation Mark (!)

in page titles, like QuestionMarks (?) so put it up front...

SPOILING

A disturbing book, written by the big sister of Scott, a young man

diagnosed with testicular Cancer, the C word, and treated/ mistreated/

Medical Harm of 15x the dosage of experimental chemo therapy

(Caspin?) until his eyes and organs were bleeding out,

writhing in pain when he asked to stop experimental chemo

treatment and the arrogant docs and nurses involved

ignored protocol and the law killing him for protocol

and experimentation, claiming completing the treatment

which normally makes one wish to die, overdosing causing harm.

and death, which he had escaped the cancer...

Jo, goes through the good days of growing up with her

little brothers, in rural Iowa, where everyone knew everyone,

people helped each other as a matter of course,

and rural survival, only to go to the big city,

trusting doctors and the medical system,

which she worked in as a technologist / specialist

with the FBI or similar in Virginia

Body

A disturbing book on so many levels,

waiting 20 years or however long, the toxic secret

likely burning holes in her soul

seeing her brother dying in such a manner,

essentially cured of cancer and the last treatment,

entirely unnecessary, just for safety, killing him in such

a inhumanely cruel way...

It is understandable that Jo didn't write this for 20+ years,

quit the profession she was in, and essentially in retirement,

felt the need to keep her promise of telling the story of her

little brother and the problems with the medical system.

It would seem there are people who have

been harmed by the system(s), and need to tell the story,

for themselves, and the others that might be harmed

for educated consumers are the best customers,

to borrow Sym's clothing stores tagline, (recently closed?)

Informed Consent is so often overlooked, rushed through

as merely paperwork, lawyers taking liberties with

your life, protecting themselves instead of the people

needing the help...

Patients knowing enough is impossible, and after the fact,

hard to tell what should have happened,

I was not there, but first person accounts

were so painful to read, I stopped around Page 123

of 173, perhaps it gets better, but the gore,

not even really explicit, was enough of a nightmare

for me, to stop reading...  And I usually read to completion

IF I start a book, rarely reading as a dyslexic, usually for pleasure,

sometimes for escape, not really the typical happy stuff,

see other reviews/ commentary on this site,

this book picked up quickly thinking it was something else,

to discovery what I had purchased wasn't the Field of Dreams

like cover, turned nightmare, I guess telling the story,

a photo or depiction of her dying lttle brother was not

something one would put on the cover, except

in Halloween time, not something one would want to

remember of a loved one, people don't die neatly,

death itself is not clean, AFAICT, plus we don't want

to say bad things of people who have passed,

they can not defend themselves, and the resentment

harms us, more than the memory of the other,

so what to do...

Irony is the name Olmstead, the LC vs Olmstead Supreme Court

decision for Intellectual Disabilities, Mental Health

and other Disability Rights, and Civil Rights

seems like a different self publishing type house,

other books on the website are self promotional,

or religious AFAICT, this odd ball book stands out,

like a sore in the side of the community,

oozing pus like any infection would...

Cleaning it up, not sure how, did lawyers fix it?

Was justice done?  Did Doctors and Medical Professionals

take responsibility for the harm done?

Book says they called a meeting and said they

made a mistake, traced down what it was,

but by then it's too late, not a near miss

a wholely unforgivable for those concerned,

and really everyone should be concerned

from simple procedures to life threatening

critical care...

Makes you not want to get help,

that said around the Tech anniversary,

in a state and system where people

don't seek treatment because the treatment

is worse than the conditions, in many cases.

Hatred, discrimination, stereotypes, stigma,

and ignorance usually is.
