Introduction/Definition/etc

Google released a kit, available

at MicroCenter when going for

another EKENH9ActionCamera2017

and see what was clearance in the

DIY section, turns out it's a voice

HAT (Hardware Above on Top)

or similar, speaker, microphone,

and with places for connecting

more speakers, motors, LED,

etc but mostly joining Google

Cloud Platform and Assistant

for home shopping, and AI Voice

experiments, requiring an account

billing veiled as Free Trial

($300 to use in a year), TensorFlow

and AI machine learning entre...

Body

Original Text

Well, the markets have an Alexa,

Echo, Home, and other products with an

innocuous (sp?) looking speaker

and microphone into your home,

mostly for shopping, (think Star Trek

talking to the computer, "Replicator

give me Early Grey piping hot",

or similar) but technically there

is a lot more behind it, speech

recognition has long been an

AI holy grail, just talk to the machine,

and the computational things behind

that, recognizing odd voices, like mine,

even banking systems trying to get

account history, or balance, and how

many retries before you are stuck back

at hit a number on the keypad, or

dropped to infinite wait with an operator/

customer service annoyances, or just

give up, hanging up, and likely

changing banks when they think

replacing keypad entry, or streamlining

people with technology that likely doesn't

work for everyone, is the economical answer

for everyone...

On the DIY side, maybe We can make it

work, if We had the tools, not the Big Name

Companies, and there are few bigger than

originally telcos, Amazon, Google, and

Big Money other$, enter at ~$30

and we will give you a RPi3 if you

order in advance, then show up

and boxes sitting there, now

~$25 and then repeated visits

around the holidays, $10,

and I bought one, opened and

looked at some of it,

buying another thinking hardware,

might fry, need extra parts,

maybe stream music to other rooms,

and finally tried doing something

and looking at the fine print,

only a sentence in the MagPi

Essentials (3.99 British Pound L

or similar,

"Siri, What's that in US$?")

about setting up billing...

Add a snow day yesterday/ today

and started on it, finally,

thinking maybe a geeky gift and

still trying (ironically, Turing

is a spell check answer

for the previous typo...)

to get it to work, for me...

While Google probably somehow

owns my data, and therefore

all my efforts on it,

IANAL and not sure what all

I signed up for, (it really should be spelled

out in plain English, legalsleeze...)

not really wanting surprise bills,

after promised $300 credit,

but not sure what things the Free Trial

would really cost...

(Probably like Amazon that you can't

actually close the accounts

and delete personal and financial

data...)

Old more public AI doing pricing

on Telcos, the magic in the numbers

and pricing schemes so complex

that people don't understand it,

so game it and put it off on software,

make that smart software, nay

intelligent software, nay

knowledge based software,

and mystery solved,

and a gimmick to get others to bite...

Ironically, on DEC-10,

VAX hardware were configured with

early AI software, but that's extra

credit...

Back in a time of NDAs

(Non Disclosure Agreements),

sign this paper so you can

get to work on something really

important, really really risky, and

like other secrets, likely a lie,

and a trap, if it is dangerous,

or doesn't work, you can't say...

Lest, your job, legal threats,

all assets, family, etc is at risk...

Enter a lot of people who rebelled

against it (ironically Rage Against the

Machine (RATM) is the mystery band

behind EKENH9ActionCamera2017

reference "those who wear badges

also burn crosses" or similar

Song name: Killing in the name

(more relevant gun people and

likely hunters who kill deer,

as opposed to the green/white

pacifist crowd...

Also, ironically, I was at Woodstock '99

sunburned so badly the first day

and hiding from much of it,

but RATM and others played

and there are others' YouTube

video up of it, yep Woodstock '99

burned, no I didn't, just hiding under

trailers earlier to stay out of the painful

sun, but $5 water and commercialism

on Rome Air Force Base B52 bombers

landing strip, wasn't 1969's

Max Yager's (sp?) Bethel called

Woodstock's Farm, etc, etc...)

Anyways, assembly, they call it

building and making,

more marketing terms,

and have partnered with/coopted?

the free and open source community

in the "Made by you with Google"

and a weblink similar

http://AIYProjects.WithGoogle.com/voice

...

Chapter 1 Vapour speak

Typical of AI, smoke and mirrors,

about what it actually is,

while not really saying,

that magic detail left out, etc...

But the lure might be set,

so read on...

Chapter 2 Your ... kit

Cardboard box to assemble,

read fold two parts, try to get it right,

numbered folds, pictures,

what could be easier,

until you try, missing those things

of gene folding algorithms.

think mind bending backflips,

and inverted somersaults,

Plus opening two antistatic bags,

but no precautions on handling

static sensitive components,

(guess just run to the store

and buy another? Nope, too tired,

middle of the night, out of money,

dog ate my homework

while on deadline, etc)

Mostly wires and simple parts,

what could be easier?

aren't you smart enough?

type challenges

Rubik's cube, and Mensa,

this is not...

Double sided tape, who doesn't have that,

around holiday shopping and

gift wrapping time 'o year?

 or use a glue gun,

I've got one around somewhere,

but too  lazy to find, might want to leave it

partially unassembled, and decide

later, no mention of taking it apart

again, nor really fire safety with

cardboard box (thinking stronger

for take out/carry around??

but WiFi/BlueTooth signals

have to go thru), maybe translucent

like my folding camping dishware/gear...)

(3 inch diameter?) speaker goes in

where holes are,  and

take out MicroSD memory card for safety,

(no mention of strong electric fields

with a magnet speaker, and near

sensitive SMT components and

it's dry and cold in the winter,

so static, no wrist band, nonstatic

mat, only professionals, serious

hobbyists, or others might have...)

Chapter 4 Software

Etcher.io, previously met in

NoVASystemic2017 packaging

RPI into a small tablet kit,

with Kano, but it's assuming

coming from a WinDoze

or Mac environment, not already

on the target platform the Linux

ARM RPi3...

So no help there, CLI

(https://etcher.io/cli/ is experimental

and likely gives M$ control of your machine

with their required dependencies...

and you wonder why it doesn't work,

your data gets published, etc...)

down to git repositories, and

download and build from source,

but it's PHP or similar web dev

magic (read crap?) stuff,

not classic Perl, Python, curl, wget,

nor shell scripting...

So finally find AIY Voice file

HACKING.md or similar

in the source code git

which says how the dated 9-11 .xy

or similar ISO MicroSD image

was created...

And start loading software on

one of the few MicroSD cards

I've got left, I want to use

the one I already have running

on the RPi3 instead of

another $10(-$40+) 32Gig that the

4kish camera eats easily,

in a day, or less, say in the snow,

when not freezing, literally,

have to pull battery with the tampon

like cord, yep it did that, again,

in the middle of the night, pre storm,

"Houston, There might be a problem..."

Well, checkpoint gave a loudish

speaker test, but the Mic may not

be working on my Voice

"Testing 1,2,3": nothing back,

and out for the day, sell past the

1.5 hours they say it takes,

but all the special sauce and

circumstances, they don't consider,

so no joy, not working,

and don't want to sign up for

expensive and likely trapping

web based corporate $tuff...

For $10 more in the bitbucket

to use an existing RPi3 by putting

something else on top,

have some other places to plug stuff in,

another speaker, maybe use the second

Voice kit speaker on, and cut the board

trace for stereo?

and other chapters for basic hardware

stuff like flash an LED from RPi,

DC motor control,

servo, etc,

all intended to be driven by voice

something a $200 list price

WowWee CHIP does without

connecting to Borg like Google

for $$$ and privacy problems

already known for Home

and other finished products

like ECHO, etc...

While anonymously training voice

technology to work on odd voices like

mine, others with more speech/ hearing

problems/challenges/disabilities,

may have it even worse,

thinking deaf students, and others,

but wouldn't it be nice to have something

that....

Idear

..responds automagically to the

likely drunk slurring in passing by

volumes (Doppler like?) from a

pickup truck, around holiday time,

especially, prep for New Years' Eve,

SuperBowl, and other excuses

others drink, including

AnyReasonWhatSoEver:

"Get the F*** of the road, asswipe/

$VariableDiminuativeSlur"

"You should be on the trail",

when so few trails go the way

I want/need, and storms prevent,

steams flood out underneath

(snorkel and mask

standard equipment... tm pending),

even just darkness and park's closed

(fine print is commuters have say

someplaces 5a-8p or so, but like

other parks and some interstates

no stopping, emergency only, etc

read the fine print on some trails,

federal, regional and state parks,

etc), plus hunters and other predators

think they own it, me, and everything

else in the world...

Besides share the road,

don't harass bikers, and others,

and road rage, public drunkenness, etc

charges await you, it was recorded,

and automagically sent to e911, Hah!

or similar geeky response to bullying,

brutality and other nastiness...

Not to mention the

Computing Across America

ComputingAcrossAmericaBook

like security system,

Behemoth/Winnabiko

updated to open source and

Linux based technology for

commuting and tour history,

and/or blurb to avoid

repeating multiple times per hour,

with every curious passerby/

lookieloo (sp?)...

Among others mentioned up here...

Come to think of it...

GoogleEar2014 rings a bell...

Modified Text

What's Missing?

The magic sauce,

only you can provide,

if you are smart enough,

rich enough,

connected enough,

etc...

What Can Be Found?

Too many ways to spend money,

poor and disabled probably don't have...

What Can Not Be Found?

The magic bullet for it...

How To Analyze?

Lenses

developers

Always more to do,

more to learn,

more to buy,

but is it worth it?

Will it work?

How much time will it take?

What will it cost?

Retailers

Just sell the stuff,

don't think too much,

more to stock,

inventory, etc...

Big Money

Millions of home microphones

and speaker systems went out

from Amazon, and others,

maybe we can make money off

of this...

(read Trojan microphone in the home(s))

small pockets

another thing to buy to keep

up with the Jones...

kids

I thought we could try it,

but it takes hardware skills,

no soldering, but glue gun,

or double sided tape,

which I can't find...

and credit card billing information?

Parent(s) and other CareGivers

WTF?  I thought this was supposed

to be fun and not expensive...

I found the Phillips 00 screwdriver,

(the stepFXActivityTracker2017

contained one, btw, and runs longer

with a fresh battery, ($1 MicroCenter had

1620s, and other places $3-4+

now only resets itself,

once in a while now,so back off data

write it down, no BlueTooth sending,

usb charging, etc like FitBit...)

Maybe a prepaid card, that would

at least have a spending limit...

and how do I turn this thing off?

Plus maybe it will get the domestic

violence stuff going on nearby...

Hmmm....

The Society of Mind?

Advanced course:

What is it?

Why would I want it?

and how to think about it?

Learn on the exemplars,

differences?

Learn period?

How to learn?

Metaknowledge?

Ph.D. thesis?

Minsky?

MIT?

WTF?

Assumptions

Technology is good...

Dreaming is good...

Dreamworks (tm elsewhere) is real...

Nightmarish on the horizon,

but keep the faith,

see all above...

Time Limits

It's just a fad, that AI stuff

will blow over,

RPis are small scale,

quad core will yield to

OctoCore,

4k is coming,

etc...

Run out of money,

Merch takes it all,

Google and others own you,

etc, etc...

Free time, instead of infinitely funded

research environments, deep pockets,

deep learning, and AI/MachineLearning

is never finished anyways, so stay tuned...

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

We can't hear you, you're not buying

stuff anyways, don't have a credit card,

so no good to us,

get out of my store,

try phone support instead...

I had ironically run into some

Severn, MD hackerspace people

UnAllocatedSpace (UAS)

one week while trolling the

DIY section of a MicroCenter,

(they had a 7? year anniversary

with some really geeky stuff,

wish I had been to the party,

but alas schedule conflicts,

long distance, energy levels, etc...)

for cheap open box returns and

other clearance items, and

said it was on my list,

they had a new mag on

hackerspaces, qualified for a box,

and would save one for me...

Anyways, when the cardboard box kit

went down to $10, I bought one,

(link says it's back up to $26 or so...)

others overheard nearby said

I wouldn't like it...

(for one thing it's a red button,

not MicroCenter's page is green,

but small diff...)

But they wanted to hear what I

thought about it...

As a cheap Voice HAT,

maybe useful,

lure into AI, likely,

but the cloud stuff,

even if free, the legalese and

Google owning, even IFF

benevolent, instead of predatory,

risky, maybe collect all my little

RPi1s, RPi2s, Zeros, ZeroWs, etc

and make something to process,

in a mini Beowulf Cray type

arrangement what a proprietary

toy WowWee CHIP can do

limited voice recognition on board,

eventually to make a replacement

RoboServicePet/ Muscovy Duck,

MuscovyMissing2017

MuscovyDuck2016

when the CHIP gets rained on,

or I crash,

CHIP minis aka Chippies are too

expensive (~$40 if you can still find them

this time of year...),

I've already invested what little

I have into x,y,z

x=EKENH9ActionCamera2017

y=this/self GoogleAIYVoiceKit2017

and

z=MemoryComplex2016

feeding all of the above...

So will see, rant/play

and relax and calm while

MungedMetaData2017

and others

awaits more of my time

and limited energy...

Maybe I should just buy time on

the logical conclusion,

according to marketing,

but tis the season, right?

/Snark

getting into dependency hell

with the one thing wants another thing

to build it, which wants android development

environment which goes back to bigger

machines (non RPi3), even the bundled

kit from MicroCenter only had a 16 Gig

card, and Android development with

IDE like Bazel,

tensorflow,

data for above, etc will quickly eat

up a small card, for a supposedly simple

device and project...
