Gov20Con
Introduction/Definition/etc
OReilly technical publishers offer a Con
http://www.gov2expo.com/gov2expo2010
about doing a major revision of government,
with technology, but probably misses a few points.
Body
Gov 2.0 Conference
DC Convention Center
Technology as a platform?
Opening up the data. An example of the SEC?
filings being made public by someone.
MassDOTDev Massacusetts Dept of Transit offering
some common bus schedules, and within an hour
someone had a google map up, and continued
development for many weeks, including making
the Red LED signs we are familiar with in the DC
area.
Interpreting the data was mentioned,
Sex Offender Registry? data has been public
and how to lie with statistics seemed to apply
1 in 7 is approached online, but a majority are
by other minors, or just over the age limit.
Some presenters were dynamic speakers,
others, even noteables, had some issues,
even with audio.
Press passes were hard to come by, even with
20+ articles published in Street Sense,
been to National Press Club, met famous
people, (well, Barry stole my seat
when I was hobbling around out of the
wheelchair to use a bathroom...)
trashed quite few people in the publications,
[even more in the blogoshere here...]
created the Will Write For Food Writers Group Page,
edited, and hosted WWFFWG for about a year
and a half, but no longer with the paper,
I was declined and this NoVAPeers.PbWorks.com
describing some issues with Federal, State and Local,
I didn't get much beyond what was freely
available to others.
The concept is appealing, but as they say just
giving the data is not enough. CSV Comma Separated
Values (spreadsheet like data, without bias towards
which Operating System nor Applications,
Open Office or Excel, or whatever in the "Cloud"
that amorphous internet repository
never really explained, but some one paying
hundreds of dollars for training and a Con
probably already knows. Those not reading the
tech literature, trade mags, blogosphere (which
may be a large part of OReilly's business, no?)
or whathaveyou might be lost, as well as non profits,
the big tech Industry was present, Google,
Red Hat and even the Micro$oft,
seats were hard to come by in the Wednesday
keynote with Tim OReilly (OReilly.com publishers
that I knew about back in the mid 1980s,
when working for the feds.
But more later. CoNNECT, healthcare...
Gov 2.0 would really be more like an
UnCon where the group members sign up to present,
-- more like a workgroup, for some call FunGroup.
Crisis Camp for like New Orleans or Haiti,
maybe the oil crisis, or Random Hacks of Kindness,
where more corporate partners continue or refine
problem spaces [BUT defined mostly by others,
= kind of a corporate democracy, no???]
and all this is a more bottom up approach,
perhaps. It was not clear to me leaving after
the free time, keynotes and a session,
not sure if lunch was included for me, or just for
regular government, I could see even on the
registration materials, what kind of mobile do
you have, do you specify, recommend, or
Approve purchases?, (not really open source
questions are they? more lobbying and vendor/
contractor CONFLICTS?)
generally assumes you can afford
a $100/ month, not the free 68 minutes of voice
only, might be a laughing stock,
but advocates risk that a lot...
One presenter asked people to raise
their hands "Who swore they would never
get a cell phone?" "And who now has one?"
Or a FaceBook Account? I'm not that social,
so even the social media seems somewhat lost
on me. Bullying online is known to be an
issue, and tech people can be some what
vigilante in their justice. Even people I've
known for a while don't want to hear the
other side, like after Ft. Hood,
or maybe my lack of PC language,
caught by the Geeks Disease (read Aspergers)
but many may have never been in the tech field,
the social mores are different, just because
someone has a PC, or games/ programs,
does NOT mean they will be accepted,
and tech is such a capital
based industry, having the latest, or not
being able to afford things and it seems,
or feels like being outside the club,
the RRWG Assistive Tech of having a crackberry,
or even a working netbook, and you
seem more different. Dress code wasn't t shirt
and jeans (ala Apple's Steve Jobs?),
and I stood out even without
the usual Help The Homeless t shirt,
having some baggage instead of Star Trek
Bluetooth tm earpiece, almost surgically attached.
Twitter is the norm. And I'm way behind
the curve. Stradling two careers, tech
back in the day, and MH these days,
and I wonder how those without limbs,
the hands slide Micro$oft may have been
presenting, with multiple colors all in like
a football group cheer, but meeting a Street Sense
vendor on the way out at Chinatown Rail,
who showed a missing leg, maybe
finding savings in open source and allowing
people the freedom to the data, but
we will still have grandmothers, disabled,
and many others who are not going to figure
it out on wifi, or dialup connections,
(OR JUST NOT TRUST IT)
with $400 / month in SSI, and even with
subsidized housing at 30% of income,
the digital divide seems like the grand canyon
or the spills like wikileaks.org
may be coming this way...
It's as if I didn't get the memo,
the 60's are dead, long live the 60's,
Micro$oft is no longer king, just greedy,
Government is the biggest non profit
in the world, but we are all stakeholders,
and should be allowed into places
where the decisions are being made,
the true transparency which Obama
and others run their platforms on...
One talk Law is the Operating System
of Gov, or similar was missed,
wonder if the slides are really open???
Dialup is not much $10/ month
(if you can get a connection,
I couldn't keep wifi data moving
or do anything productive online
at the Con with wifi, the iPad guy on the
floor next to me probably had mobile broadband,
like most there, or with cell smart phone data plans..)
fiber optic FIOS is the norm,
instead of even broadband at home,
running around like 2 hour commutes,
holes in the middle of the day schedules
and I don't see at 46 years old how it would
be possible to catch up, keep
up and not be roadkill as
Poverty = Exclusion
even amongst those that know me.
Sorry to be further depressing,
but 2 hours sleep last night (Tues,
now Friday publishing this)
downloading the lastest Fedora Linux Distro
just released ISO, using bittorrent, saving
and installing, and I'm
not even feeling a part, included,
checking VOCALVirginia.org on a
STILL Constant Contact MARKETING LIST
tracking users (this "free" hosting service PBWorks.com
uses trackers too, check Ghostery.com Firefox web browser
addon if you want to block them..),
Adobe Flash or something excludes me from
even finding out about something
I was involved in proposing,
VOCALNetwork which paid
M.S.W.s, staff and directors, and
talk of forming regional chapters and going
self supporting, and it would
be like going back to 1200 baud
dialup. Too painful to even consider
in the States and even 3rd and 4th World...
