Introduction/Definition/etc

HappyTurkeyDay2009

Might as well be nice one day a year ;-/

Body

OK, so I'm not normally very nice on this "blog"/ wiki

where I didn't get what I wanted after 5 years of effort,

so why be nice today?

Well, it's an anniversary of sorts....

People go through the hell of family stuff,

or some homeless are treated well

for a change, and then back out into

the cruel cold world...

Millions and Millions of turkeys are slaughtered

to make meals for the meat eaters,

and Tofurkey is served in some of the

vegan/ vegetarian homes across the world,

and it's a food, football and family holiday,

unlike some religious holidays where pagans

rule...

But I said I was being nice, and was the proceeding

paragraphs nice?

Must have woken up on the wrong side

of the bed again.  Which reminds me,

there was a PBS special on the sleep/

dreaming stuff recently.  I didn't catch much

of it, but seemed like REM sleep has

something to do with people's mood

changes at night/ waking.  Too much REM

and people have issues?

Not enough sleep and I seem to think

it breaks people, as some people

are tortured that way.

And triptophan (sp?) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tryptophan

that thing in turkey

that makes people sleepy, add driving

and "crazy" schedules and it becomes dangerous,

so to steal from Hill Street Blues (old TV cop show)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hill_Street_Blues

"Let's be careful out there!"

But there was something else on my mind,

Oh, yeah, Mary Ellen Copeland wrote some

http://www.mentalhealthrecovery.com/

other books besides just WRAP (Wellness

Recovery Action Plans) which states seem to

be pushing upon unsuspecting millions,

and making her some personal $$$.

My feeling is that anyone who thinks

they have a cure for MH, needs to have

their head examined, not by professionals,

but by other people "on the ward", so to speak.

IAmBackFromTheBrink.com

is one such site.  I've not read the book,

otherwise I'd need to do a book report on

it and share it with the whole class ;-/

but it worries me when people claim

to be cured.  Moderation Management

http://moderation.org/

and many substance abuse people

claim to be recoverED, and while people

may make progress, and glad some people

are, even in my perpetually grouchy state,

selling stuff to other people when

you claim to be well seems frought

with danger/ risk, IMO.

Teaching coping skills, sharing what

works for you, and trying to give back

make sense, but making claims of

having the answer for other people???

Back to Mary Ellen Copeland's little empire,

I'd done the WRAP Basic class a long time

ago and worked on a WRAP plan,

many weeks of what seemed like an

ordeal, writing out the future when the future

generally isn't very certain.  Why would I tell people

what I want, when the system seems abusive?

My teacher didn't seem very respectful

to me, and someone, it seems, paid

$1000+ for the person to be able to teach

that?  Why wouldn't some states use

something that doesn't profit an individual?

Buy the rights to use WRAP???

It's like a single vendor solution

(read M$) which is probably basically

illegal, though I'm not a lawyer (IANAL)

and don't play one on line nor in groups...

Copelands Loneliness Workbook

and the Depression Workbook come to mind.

A brief perusal of the books make it look like

selling blank paper (many workbooks are).

I'm sure some people swear by

the process and are obligated to give

trainings based on someone else paying

or they themselves paying $Thousands$

to learn Her process.

And not that there isn't a need for such

things.  Having baseline materials

to discuss MH issues (since MH is

so varied, it could be Depression,

could be Schizophrenia (usually

requires more structured activities)

or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder,

or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder,

or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder,

or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder,

or Borderline Personality Disorder,

or Manic Depression/ Bipolar,

or any number of other DSM disease

based things, which IMO need to

be considered separately,

lumping them all into the same

category of "The Mentally Ill"

doesn't seem like it will ever lead

to a solution, scientifically, as it's

comparing apples and oranges...

But I digress.  Happy Thanksgiving

people.  Try To Stay Alive.

We have had too many losses,

to add to the list, and I might start

being mean to people who pass,

as it seems like positive reinforcement

to be nice to people we lose,

and I'm so rarely nice after the last

few years experience with the

MH/Advocacy racket, that like

Seinfield's one character,

maybe trying the opposite

will help...

And  this concludes this very

early am rambling/ ranting,

er. positive reinforcing inspirational

talk...

Farmers Markets Paviliion Proposal?

P.S. Speaking of foods,

Fairfax County & other jurisdictions

could use Year Round Farmers Markets

by adding Arts and Crafts (writing, photography,

painting, sewing/ pottery, (read things done

in MH Centers and at home by MH people

sellable to neighbors without risk of getting

physically sick like edibles),

just like Alexandria City's 200+ year

old market at City Hall, and other

markets in DC & elsewhere do.

While local produce may be scarce

during the winter and early spring months,

and having an underground/ parking level

really helps for bad weather

(read rain, ice/cold/hot sun),might be good,

plus power plugs on the light poles

available for heaters/ computers/ lights/ etc,

plus Harrisonburg, VA built a pavillion

(permanent roof to avoid tent setup/

teardown) in their FM parking lot!,

(oh, and access to bathrooms,

sounds like a Stimulus proposal to me!...)

some people need a support group for the

After Market withdrawl of the community/

preK, seniors networking / politicking that is

missing when seasonal markets

[and analogously homeless shelters]

close down/ shutter.

Says a local PITA who first wrote

about Farmers Markets in StreetSense,

later made the front page with a gleaning

photo, and has been to all sorts of ones

over the last few years...

Some farmer's markets even take food stamps,

match funds, provide donations to local food

banks as rent for using government space,

so does a community good too...

Conclusion
