Herding Turtles training report DRAFT

VOCAL training on meeting facilitation in Central Virginia between Richmond and Charlottesville north of I64 toward Lake Anna at the disability accessible Sophia House interfaith retreat adn conference center in Louisa, VA.
Difficult for me to find the place, possibly due to forgetting the official emailed directions in a sleep deprived rush to get going to a 10 am start in Central Virginia. Ironically, saw a turtle crossing the road on the rush there hoping to make the start time (i.e. meetings start and end on time). No turtles were harmed by this driver on the way, even rushing late ;-)
Lousia county planning office in their government building downtown was not very helpful in finding the retreat center. Perhaps the social services across the road would have been better than being told to call 911... Uncle Mark and Tim are you listening?
Tree Bressen of TreeGroup taught the class utilizing many of the meeting techniques included in handouts and on her website like agenda planning, committees & delegation, meeting formats, ground rules, notetaking/minutes, consensus resource sheet, lecture, role playing, props and leadership by example.
Role playing near the end of the day allowed practice in facilitation with real life interruptions, personal confrontations and other factors.
Pictures were taken (many as overdramatic example interruptions), but not likely to appear here due to our currently limited pbwiki file disk space...
Conclusions:
A very useful class which could more helpful to be offered in many places across the state, especially for startup consumer run organizations.
Limited enrollment, transportation, and scheduling make for serious practical limitations
with consumers accessing training necessary for empowerment, Consumer Owned and Operated Programs and a consumer directed process...
Train the trainer and video training may reduce some of the barriers as well.
