IcedGreenTea2014

Introduction/Definition/etc

Some clever name I came up with to talk/ write about the body politic...

Green, Tea Party, and on ICE...

ICE= In Case of Emergency, and maybe some immigration related security force name...

Green = environmentally conscious political organization(s), along the spectrum of GreenPeace, but less activist, and more PC

Tea Party = cost conscious at any cost political organization that may be the death of many disabled/poor/senior/disadvantaged/etc

DRAFT

Like most of what is up here, is in draft status, and as content in a wiki subject to change, without notice, so check back, most pages have a date and time on them, and changes are logged, in revisions, like most wiki software...

Body

MOVE

Move = four letter word that consumes all time and space, destroying order in the known universe

So the powers that be, or think they be, sent a letter, actually, several, and I'm moving, someone joked, as monitoring me, or listening through the wall as I was talking to someone else, on a Tuesday about a green/city move, and well, I'm trying.

As a disabled person on short notice, with funds low, I asked for reasonable accommodations for the move, required paperwork, and submitted what I could, quickly

Last move took me about a month, IIRC. so I asked for that...

Move Tech

Tech = that four letter word similar to technique that makes all things seem simple, when in reality, they are not, procedurally, legally, administratively, (anti authoritarianism, etc)

So, looking at tech to move, and a VAN would fit in the new space, for a limited time, but required rental, reservation, forward planning, money, credit and/or deposit(s), and likely some accessories, like Boxes, hand cart, and paid labour

BuildCart

Not enough time to weld one, as short deadline and annoyingly difficult to do projects at school, as the trailer project has found over the last year...  See WeldingBasics2013 , GeeksRule2014 and even GeekingOutWithRaspberryPi2012 ...  Plus some procrastination...

HandCart

Likely $10/day rental fees, in addition to a truck, with deposit of $100 needed, according to resting neighbors discussed outside, and an annoyance when not in use, possible theft /loss, rattling around an empty truck/van, unless secured, etc...

So researching purchase options, sourcing, etc and found a steel and aluminum one in a new Fredericksburg tool store on sale for about $100, and went for a look, finding that those were not in stock, nor were they in stores, but had to be special ordered, let's say, maybe delivered to the store for free, and that takes 7-10-14 days or so, which was longer than the projected move deadline would allow....

Utility cart, and dump carts were also interesting, they are used in gardening, and other household chores, mostly in places with a yard, and more space, like a garage, and the little(ish) red one with fold up sides was cute, checked claims of rated loads against reviews on their own site, and thinking back in the day, as a kid with the Red red Radio Flyer trucks, and I wanted one, but it was too heavy and big in a box to self transport...

Large wheel size, inflated, and/or solid, capacity (load), and foldability, plus other design decisions...

Large tongue/ foot like a dlivery person, but wanted new, and pushed the store to have some moving tools and supplies, as stuff goes in, out and other stuff before you build / repair/ etc...

So ended up with an all steel (heavy, but strong) cart that folds, converting with caster wheels (small and tightening required), no assembly required really (boo...), two stashed in a corner, in the back of the new store (set aside, or filling tires?), and looked for folding and better, but could not locate them, even in the more established Richmond store another 50+ miles each way, traveling on a day with very bad traffic along the interstate, and an impending storm...

Getting It Back

After maybe an hour of lots of sales and managerial assistance in locating, not finding a better one close by, without special order, and I actually buy, the hand cart/truck and take it out of the store, to  the parking lot, and how do I get it back, was recommended and bought tie down ratcheting straps (severe concerns with those found left on the highway/ ramps, etc broken and debris that bicyclists and motorcyclists and others like pedestrians will have problems with, but the webbing was useful, just small and thin, by comparison to the strap that some experienced movers carry furniture on their back down stairs...), asked for and got some boxes for padding/ scraping,

Try tying down lengthwise, and frustrated at the height and unstability, a passerby recommended like the bedroll perpendicular, and that seemed to work, several minutes later of retying it down, adding box padding to avoid scraping the side cases (also bought tool tray mesh, but decided to keep that fresh...)

Check stability in the parking lot, not bad, then left turn in front of a EMS/fire truck at the major road (3?), many stop and gos, first ramp onto the interstate and in business (not really, but moving, like a herd of turtles, old family vacay giggle), into more stop and go traffic,..

A state trooper passes me by, worried I might be stopped, but he goes on and stops and goes along the backup on busy interstate and he (presumably by odds) sirens and pulls over someone else, I pass by with a truck in between, and stop and go until home, triumphant, that I've got a new tool! /smile

DeadLine

On deadline, near deadline, or after deadline, a few arguments ensued...

(Editing being now being Memorial Day weekend, a little military history is in order, a deadLine is the line where you do not cross, lest you be in the line of fire (read bullets/rockets/bad deadly stuff whizzing by fast and hot, and be killed)...

The monitoring, harassing, following and StalkingByProxy2013 , etc are amazing...

Plan

Plan = another 4 letter word, rarely accomplished, in actuality, despite mil and others high aspirations in the face of reality...

Calculating Trips

For planning, sanity (when, oh when, will it be over?.... Given 80+ degree temps, downtrodden asking/ panhandling, luckily not agressively for money near a convenience store, police likely called on me by a luxury car owner, was I mentioning scratches, trying to avoid, services likely available for him and not, pushed to have him work for me, for money that I cannot spare, and slip and fall insurance risks, someone I don't know/trust/want in my place, developing fierce independence to go solo on the move, to punish myself for having so much stuff, gain exercise, weight loss, tone up my aging and flabby self, etc)

Getting into maybe 10 planned (what do I need at the new place that I'm just camping at, until I decide if it will work, like a sleepover for group living, like daily routine (read ADLs for those clinical/brutalized) eating, showering, resting, etc) motorbiked trips with large duffel type bag (reducing boxes, odd shaped stuff, etc) and wondering about the big stuff, furniture, etc how many trips with the hand truck, cubic feet/ yards/ meters and hand truck size stacked how high, etc...

Number of boxes is one metric, but not so planned as to box and label stuff as sorting stuff (avoiding nestalgia paralysis) along the way...

Walking Trips

Getting bicycle(s) and other stuff over, and took a few trips by walking back to old place and getting stuff, physically carrying it back, later in the night, or early morning, where and when less people, however sketchy were possibly around, sometimes with valuables in my possession (remember CITY move)...

Fall Over

Fell over on an oddly banked new turn going down a hill, crawling to next to no speed, with heavy box in bag on tank, when tired, and about to call it quits for a while...

I know my limits and going beyond them...

Slowing Down

OK, not the one week after checking noises and rain conditions, etc move as had hoped, and need more time, start arguing for it, original need was four (4) weeks, and push for that instead of the two (2) THEY wanted.

Don't get hurt, main consideration, their profits be damned, so to speak...

Big Stuff

Bed is big and been working up to larger and more cumbersome stuff (large bookcase included), a little engineering challenge, I think I called it to curious and bewildered onlookers and nosy neighbors...

InnerTube Straps

Started as cheap padding, but adding three (3) straps to the handcart two (2) on the handle like a harness/yoke (jokes of mule v. iron horse depending upon relative intelligence and energy level v. BFI (Brute Force and Ignorance...), and one on the cross bar of the handle part, several wrapped, wholey along the mid base...

Bike Trailer AddOn

Adding the ratty (left outside and post kid...) two wheeled folding Burley bike trailer to the folded out hand cart gave extra bed length, for well, the bed,  but proved to be unwieldy in turns at least to start, dumping stuff, and starting over in packing strapping with inner tubes, etc...

Wonder what tractor trailers with extra cargo go through...

Assists

Kid/ older toddler started crying when I passed by, so I pretended to be the cargo and let the kid and mom pull me along a flat part and then played on a ramp, she set off the alarm, showing the other private playground, and then back to work, so to speak, hauling stuff...

One food delivery guy helped after a food delivery day getting the large and historic solid wood table (forgot top comes off, with dowels!) through the doorway, down fourth floor stairs to sidewalk...  Offered hot dogs, as was cooking the last four frozen, and considered what I could give him, but requests were too big, (bike, much too valuable, personally significant, etc) so stopped asking for assistance from him, though we are still talking, last i checked, and I still carry donated food to help (read not formal volunteer, as their hierarchical power structure doesn't allow volunteering formally and receiving food, like a provider/client/slave type relationship, instead of peer based more equals as espoused here on NoVAPeers...)...

Giving props to the young Asian couple who I'll call the (redacted neighboring apartment complex) plant preservation foundation for helping get the cart with soft mattress by the narrow sidewalk clearance going up a hill, the first large trip over, post wind blowing the large bookcase over on the grassy hill outside old place...

A kid with mom helped pull trailer along the road, seemed to think it was a train, and I tried explaining the straps/yoke like a backpack, then a train wreck, so had to take it back, on a turn anyway,..

Turtle

Well coming into parking, near a gate, in the periphery showed a stone, rock, or something.

Upon completing the maneuver, I stopped, went back, pushed the buzzer for assistance, no answer, and started to take it across the street, to a park but finding no suitable access, while carrying stuff, went the wrong direction, in the excitement of finding something and came back.   Noticing some uniform like assistance was available, I went and talked to said personnel, and moved the turtle to a safe corner, to move the vehicle.  I had talked to several others, including contractors, and entering vehicles, about assistance in others not running over the turtle, in the mean time...

Pet Policy

Small pets are allowed, roaches probably excluded...

Mice, etc...

Rabbits, probably OK...

Fleas, lice, other problems exist...

Feeding  snakes, and maybe other reptiles, etc can be a problem...

No Dogs or Philosophers Allowed

Large Dogs, and Philosophers probably not allowed

(see No Dogs Nor Philosophers Allowed, find link to a cable show, iirc...)

http://www.pdcnet.org/pages/Products/electronic/nodogs.htm

Lost and Found

No policy posted, AFAICT....

Most places you talk with security, front desk, etc...

Value of Said Turtle

Giving something of value is against the rules...

Some say people giving away valued possessions, is a sign of suicidality, but when moving, or life threatened, (read potentially becoming homeless again, a terrorist like threat IMO) not so sure...

But a live turtle is it's own reward, comic relief be damned, and lawyers, you know what you can do with it right now...

Care and Feeding of a Turtle

Additional costs of "owning" a turtle are prohibitive, perhaps right now...

Fish tank,

time to research the proper vet stuff,

vet bills,

seeking service animal status,

free range, i.e. proper amounts of space for pets,

mating habits of local turtles,

egg laying procedures of turtles,

Turtle tracking processes,

sun requirements,

toxicity of drywall powder, fiberglass, oil, etc on turtles,

etc..

ad nausium...

Staff Hours

I was informed that staff were in a meeting, possibly about me today...

Nowhere in the call box were other options, though maintenance/ security responded...

Emergency Repair Services

Not a heating / A/C problem,

Not a drain nor water leak,

It might be an accessibility problem, but the height of the access device at the gate didn't allow the reptilian resident/former resident to do the gate, so an intruder?  Non threatening, to me personally, until you consider the kids coming back from school, and fights ensuing of who's turtle is it...

And delays during a DeadLine...

Planned by others, or not...

St. Peter and the Pearly Gates

If I were crossing a bigger road, especially nearby, I'd be more careful, as a human, but as a turtle, or dead cat seen the other day, on a hill nearby, with my former coloring, and not reported, AFAICT, I'd rather not play Frogger, at this time...

Relationships

Some people in substance abuse recovery, in the media, say that try a plant before considering a relationship with a human, ironically Lois mentioned gardens and flowers a lot, a wandering drunk (read Jew) joke emerged...

Ivy is a common plant to make a wall green(ish), and it has lasting effects of heat dissipation, possible noise reduction, but roots and pruning damage to the brick and mortar, much less concrete, and other options might exist...

Turtle Gate

See Beer Gate and other possibly serendipitous events for possible humor...

Visitation

On site, on holidays, specifics to be worked out

Community Turtle

Talking to a few kids, with parents present, about finding a turtle, and later thinking everyone is going to want a turtle of their own, and how many turtles can the local ecosystem support, etc...

Sharing can be difficult for some ages, see OLPC (Laptop.org), for one take on it...

Turtle Crossing Sign

Might need a turtle crossing sign, possibly found at a local pet supply store...

Mr/Mrs T.

Besides aging the turtle and determining gender, naming the turtle, Mr./Mrs./Miss T. or Formerly Known As Turtle, etc...

Disposition

Turtle went to security/ maintenance on duty / lost and found, though I called dibs and visitation, yet to happen...

Would have been a good community activity, instead of eviction harassment, at an evening meeting, sidebar to a bilingual presentation by local government...

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

Moves are hell, find funny what you can, to get through them...

The fostering of animals, service animals, pet value of having someone/ something to relate to are enormous...

Right now accessibility, is an issue, and people with disabilities are regularly excluded from having children, financially, and socially because of finances (similar to dating practices with homeless/ poor, etc)...

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

Ever find a stray or wounded/ abandoned animal, and what did you do?

Fallen baby birds, for example and IIRC, aren't taken back by their parents, if they smell like others (check references)

Stray dogs and cats are a lot of work, and then you find the owner/ former owner, and lose the pet, maybe a practice run of getting your own?

What are the policy and procedures of wildlife wandering on another's property when neighbors?  Let them wander back?  Protect them when you can?  Let Darwin take it's course?
