Welcome to your NoVAPeers PBWiki!

Introduction

This is an experimental Wiki for the Northern Virginia Regional Recovery Workgroup.

Group feedback during the website section of the Proposal writing (in Spring 2006) mentioned a Wiki, so this is one to experiment, learn while doing, gather feedback, use for planning, and make collaborative decisions on how to continue with the website development based on feedback.

Jerry originally had some concerns about Wiki being difficult to edit for the novice, but found the PBWiki may be an easy enough way to start.

Note: This free pbwiki is limited in disk space, features (sometimes called crippleware) - and contains ads- but can get us started until we can register a domain and get hosting, which likely requires money, organization, effort and community involvement.

The wiki is envisioned as being part, but not an entire Interactive Website, to include a forum, calendar, custom programming and many other features...

UPDATES

Funding for the website subgroup has been delayed by 8 months now in February 2007 so keeping up with the evolving organization of the RRWG, all the subgroups volumous meeting minutes, jargon commonly used in the field and region (e.g. 'What's a LIPOS?') much less 'What's a Wiki?' or more goal directed 'What's recovery?' and 'What recovery means to you' as a personal recovery tools without pay, transportation to visit and document the peer programs in the 5 main jurisdictions in the region, much less making transportation to hundreds of RRWG and subgroup meetings has contributed to exhaustion and demoralization of Jerry.

Like WikiPedia.org, one person didn't make an encyclopedia to rival Britannica, but it took community effort, multiple authors/contributors, and much more work behind the scenes...

In Oct 2006, many of these regional issues were mentioned on the FrontPage after being mentioned in many other less visible pages, and a few rays of hope in December prompted a little updating, but perhaps for political reasons, or the belief that individual consumers leading RRWG shouldn't be the leading live examples of recovery facilitated by money and paid positions removing barriers described here and elsewhere...

Five more months of delays (the entire RRWG usually only meets monthly) to February 2007, combined with lack of cab reimbursement, evolving organizational & fiscal procedures, paid employment, fall rain and winter weather and now Jerry's broken toe have limited participation in face to face meetings to report online here.

Other organizational issues of how subgroups communicate and report out to the larger RRWG, much less RRWG externally to the public (aka Jerry said/wrote what? ;-} ), or between subgroup finances, lapse funds and competition to get larger monies ($400+K subgroups) through developing new processes, contracting vehicles out of county purchasing and committed before the little $50k proposed for this main website starting in July 2006 and similarly Assistive Tech, slated to start in Jan 2007, may give a somewhat unauthorized and unofficial 'behind the scenes' picture of the internal RRWG processes.

Bottom Line

The Bottom Line is that this PBWiki is a working prototype that contains some of the structure and plans for a yet unfunded larger NoVAPeers.org website with more components (likely in subdomains like pbwiki.NoVAPeers.org), more complete respresentation of jurisdictions outside the largest Fairfax County so far limited by funding for transportation and further paid work to enhance the initial vision to a fully implemented Interactive Website.

Wiki Notes

Dialup Note*

Pictures are on the individual member pages, Group Pictures and a few other places. Please review any picture you are in, edit as necessary, add your pics and download any you want to keep as they are using a lot of -our 12.5 MB free file disk space-, NOW 1 Gig, so never mind ;-).

For loading pages with dialin, scaling down the pictures resolution could be done, or individuals could remove pictures from their user pages while keeping them in the files section until reduced.

Also, the proposed upgrade from the free service to a paid hosting can increase file space to > 1 GB enabling over 100,000 times the space. DONE!

And you can edit this page by clicking on the edit button above which makes this interactive. You can also comment** on the pages created by others, without changing the writing of another, but providing feedback... Ideally individuals can cooperatively edit pages, perhaps starting by commenting on pages they are interested in or creating an alternative page by cut and paste and editing that version, communicating between writers on comments or individual pages about the writing process...

20070223 Jerry Adding Update & Bottom Line section with more current 2007 website status

20061005 Jerry

  1. reverse order the page history and starting to think it should be on a diff page, especially as it gets longer over time.
  2. Previously added a SideBar, which was a feature that solves many problems starting out, but causes a few as well (e.g. PeerChart)...

20060913 Jerry

  1. editing the page with a different browser which highlights bad spelling and after away from it for a while, invision -> envision, disk space issues, pictures and a few other places touched? check changes for "differences"...
  2. Wiki sections moved up

20060910 Jerry

  1. added OOOFC Exec Dir RTF (rich text format) in another page
  2. changing strike for parts of pbwiki

20060830 Jerry

Phil of NAMI-PW upgraded this pbwiki from the free version and enabled many more features including:

  • NO ADS!
  • much more disk space (appropriate file uploads now 'allowed'!),
  • CSS style sheet changed to make system wide changes immediately apparent.
  • Advanced permissions. Default wiki access is now a Contributor when logged in with our group wiki wide password. Moderators are the Interactive Website team members who were invited today. More in a following pbwiki advanced training.
  • Acceptable Use Policy is started for going towards allowing access from people outside the RRWG. More in a face to face meeting...
  • other changes as applied
  • RRWG members are encouraged to contribute, comment and edit as able, and ask team members for TechHelp...

20060816 Jerry

This FrontPage has historically been a mess, partially because of the lack of structure of the workgroup as it evolves, terms like the 7 service areas are defined and refined, short names are created for the whole RRWG, each subgroup, known limitations of Jerry's writing skills, nested sections, the group and individual's learning wiki with inherent lack of participation during the learning curve, and changing paradigms from a general website or traditional website with hierarchical organization (static pages and single authority) to a community based wiki paradigm.
