JustLikeSomeoneWithoutMentalIllnessOnlyMoreSoByMarkVonnegutMD

Introduction/Definition/etc

Subtitled A Memoir, Mark is Kurt's son, and got into HMS after some adventures in creating a B.C.

commune/Intentional Community, surviving the 60's, his family of origin including orphans

joining the family, marriage, kids, private practice, divorce, marriage, losing his father

(lost his mother previously?), and maybe even magic mushrooms...

Body

Eventually with a label of Manic Depression, now called Bipolar Disorder, originally the psychosis,

hospital admissions, alcoholism, Xanax, and all sorts of other things...

Not bad for a Religion student from Swarthmore *(/joke)*.

Writing style is actually interesting, thinking more like the old medical child prodigy show

Doogie Howser, M.D. , simple statements combined to make rather complex meanings,

in small chunks, too...

Pictures are included, of the family at various stages, artwork by the author, and a relatively

easy read, for a dyslexic, and in the doctor's thought patterns, which seems to help...

Not only what is said, which is a lot, maybe more P.C. than recently deceased CarrieFishersWishfulDrinkingAtLincoln performance, (I haven't read much of hers,

but maybe read more after the performance), so literary skill is probably inherited,

though I might have to (re?)read Slaughterhouse Five, or some of Kurt's works

to be sure... (Checked: WikiPedia mentioned something similar on Kurt's writing style)

Old Back To School with Rodney Dangerfield had the boy character /Rodney played hiring Kurt?

for doing his homework, and getting criticism of not being anything like Kurt,

plus a plagiarism honor code charge to defend, besides the other issue

with having dad at school.

Kurt taught at Harvard, like an alum and Mother Harvard is strong,

but Mark even ended up on the admission's committee...

If I had to guess, besides famous parent/lineage, the psychiatrist MD

they both saw may have helped a little...

I'm wary of making too many evaluative statements about the book,

having just finished it this A.M., a couple day read, and maybe need to

let it digest a little more...

Very candid about stuff, lawyers might have had fun,

the publishing house probably had a lot of permissions to do,

to even print it...

Early articles written by Mark might be good to check out,

adding a bibliography, reference, index, etc might be good too,

making it a textbook like MastersOfS2016 tried too, and other places.

Recovery is mentioned, and his coping mechanisms throughout,

while he is critical of managed care, insurance companies,

and even a trip to Honduras for giving free medical care that turns out

to have to be paid, comparing the country to Haiti, impoverished,

and other motives involved, it might even be good for Pre Med,

allied health, and anyone thinking of going to medical school,

without the JD Salinger type response, and many other things,

that happens with Fame, publicity, recognition and other issues...

NAMI and the like is mentioned, iirc, and advocacy, the perspectives,

similar, perhaps to Dan Fischer and others late in their careers,

Kay Jamison Redfield? and others publishing after getting titles,

and still being able to practice at some level(s),

writing enhancing that perhaps, and a therapy/ source of income

for down times, painting, intramural sports and other activities,

legal and not, mentioned, now over 60 years old,

but most starting out would not be able to be so forthright,

and still be accepted, internally, people are known

to have issues, and some of the Med School faculty comments,

basically using him as a case study, seemed realistic,

but not as predatory as might be done elsewhere...

Mr. Hart's experience in Harvard Law in the Paper Chase

may be a good analogy, professionalism,

and a good story/ read, some political correctness

and reality in the story, editors must have had some fun with it...

Much less the legal department(s)... /Snark

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

I like the book, though not sure what to do with the information presented,

at this point, but that doesn't stop me from being a mad monkey

at the keyboard doing this drivel on it...

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

How much should you tell others about your personal health information?

Would it limit what opportunities in life you may have?

Is it stigma, and/or common sense?

Would you see a doctor you knew had a mental illness?

What about in a wheel chair?

From Polio/ Small Pox?

Blind?

How about a lawyer?

With the same conditions above?

Would it help if you had the same issues?

Or hinder?

Some people think a wounded healer is best, why and why not?

  1. editing a bit Howser, Back To School, not Old School
  2. would be nice to add links to the Movie, and specifics, but mostly an exercise left for the reader,
  3. and perhaps add Spoiling?
  4. More? TBD
