A bike trip to

Mount Vernon

SherWood Hall regional library parking lot

in FairFax County, Virginia,

South Alexandria, Virginia (postal wise)

following other markets

WODTrail2022

and trying SNAP EBT

use with local tokens

aka poker chips

WODTrail2022

collecting SNAP EBT local currency tokens,
poker chips, and got a wooden (nickel?)
$2 one given to me at Reston for
Mt Vernon, SherWoodHall used to be called,
and McCutcheon or similar now...

Oddly there's a company with similar name
which cans/ in glass mostly, local produce,
i've run across various places,
so a farmers stand, road side, and likely have those,
i'd found a mislabeling in one, i guess,
peppers as seasoning or bell pepper, iirc,
probably at Local Market, used to be in Falls Church,
but RetailDiscrimination2012 or similar, and think
they closed, not a bad idea, to have the intermediary
between a weekly producers only market
and availability more like a grocery store,
certainly big ones are trying to do more local,
Giant (Food)'s magazine includes a showcase of
local small businesses...
Others may be doing similar, SafeWay I'm not around
that much, anymore, to know,
Whole Foods, idk,
Harris Teeter,
and international very big chains
Aldi, Lidl, also don't know,
but very likely...

So got it in my head to try down there,
used to live there, and planning some,
but heat and other demands, so not sure,
but made the time, nervous about it overnight,
thinking i might, but lots of other things going on,
...

Up too early, and decide maybe, if can go back down,
too early to leave, 0300a or so, really before,
but can easily kill some time playing daily games,
Games2022 if created may include
WordNut
TapAway (mostly boring similar unless online
then very annoying ads, especially if eating DataPlan)
Solitaire Games
PipeArt
FlowFree,
been calling it FreeFlow, but really the reverse
Flow, Free Version, or similar...

there are other games, but mostly on those
daily, and takes a while,
Solitaire Games, so many versions of solitaire,
even just KlonDike
but this product is a clipboard, requiring, maybe 5 games
3 categories and daily calendared challenge,
usually have to use a hint/ magic wand,
and those i'd have to collect with regular plays,
but timing on other clipboard checklists, so more than just
a game or two, and trying to start the day with a clear mind,
head, today's started with a Mango Cream bar, frozen,
from Lidl, so already sugared up and may show in the drivel
run on sentences, besides paragraphing, run on verbage...

But route planning, checked gMaps and ate Data Plan
13 Miles or so depending on route,
gDrug thought i should go down WOD to the river and
take the GW ParkWay, then maybe cut over,
which has it's advantages,
and drawbacks,
but i'd play it by ear, and try to avoid hills,
brakes still need work, and one anxiety,
caution is flattening it out, big hills,
a few places, Beacon Hill down outside the beltway
being one, up to Huntington, was a normal route,
up might be OK, but down, brakes required,
and getting low, i could adjust, but takes
tools, maybe even new pads, and a stand
helps, plus third and/or fo(u)rth hand tools,
plus time, and a mess, as brake dust/ debris,
oily and messy, so gloves? wipe up and cleaning,
many washings with soap, to get rid of oil, grease,
etc, near chain, so more there too,
and maybe have to take off things,
like panniers, some ripped out by now,
and getting into things...
Better done in A/C, but need to test it,
too, so back out in the heat...

A lot to deal with, would have been better
at a TBH clinic if had free time, but that takes
a day trip and been to warm/ tired,
and missed/ skipped those...

So an errand along the way, and up early,
down a little more, drink liquids are a quick
alarm clock someone once told me,
about an hour to process a lot of liquid,
and depending pee again anyways in the night,
body catches up to processing liquids,
solid waste, food takes about a day,
and a lot less scheduled, so could be 24 hours,
or depending, less, beans, something disagreeable,
much less, so eating before big trips,
heat and other factors involved, exercise
may be one, too...

Dairy, lactose intolerant, like,
bloating, etc...

Not that pleasant a topic for a page intended
for Farmers Market trip, but a goal,
not just a trail path like before
WODTrail2022 which would actually break out
3 markets into separate pages,
splitting it up...
SubPages and segmenting/ sections
but more effort and time and energy than i have
right now and takes online time at that...

So a lot of carryover....

Do another errand on the way,
would be good to take out ReCycling,
etc while going out too...

So some construction on the way,
South Glebe Road bridge is closed,
but a pedestrian walkway left open,
and underpass of i395 is interesting,
turns out i hit it at a bad sun time,
rising morning sun into my face,
and oncoming traffic on the trail,
and wanted that to stop quickly,
detour from the underpass of that bridge
work, and stop take a photo or few,
behind me too, get 4 directions?
stream? etc...
and again a couple places, turns
and ramp/ curb asphalt over and sharp,
makeshift then a curb fragment and driveway
edges, and out into the street, a dead end
except the gas station still open,
not sure how much business they get,
without through traffic but still in business,
so far...

and down into Arlandria,
missed the farmers market
and trail and sewage plant,
how much urban to do?

Nice to be able to stop,
and use a bathroom, or backup to bus,
if lost a tube/ or something,
but will see...

Decided to try Russell Road,
i'd used it previously and change my mind later,
if necessary, don't need to go by VeloCity
and not open at that hour anyways, afaict...

Aldi and other things that way,
TJs in Old Town,
and lots of memories,
mostly difficult at that point,
i've not gone down there for a reason,
reminds me of losing my father,
among other things...

But Russell Road is Hilly,
very, it seems, the WOD was mostly flat,
rail to trail, but not the company/
non profit/ org, may have preceded that,
or started it, idk, an early conversion?
or just short, by comparison,
think i saw 40 miles, but lose a few
where i start from... 37 rounds to 40...
SizzlingCentury was 100 miles,
so 2x 40 = 80 and an Arlington loop
or so victory lap?

Up hill, joke with a woman with dog,
wanna be a sled dog?
most the thought of working dogs,
lap dogs and many small,
really taken as a joke,
imagine the animated show
Grinch and small animal large haul,
collapsing, i'm 200+ pounds,
bike is 30+ and stuff maybe 20+ more
before getting much on/ in, like groceries,
so 250+ to start, and a maybe 50 pound dog,
small for a golden, but uneven...

Many hills not just one,
and a stop of few along the way,
take some photos, stopped waiting on a light,
so have a little time...

Had packed a Mango Nectar square box,
cold, leaving, and start drinking that,
while still cold, would be nice,
speed bumps, and more hills,
finally get to the other side,
had skipped going over to the waterfront,
for me, direct would help, but already
went stream, for WOD start/ TrailHead...
so that decision already affected others,
Seminary might have been good,
residential, and direct, an Aldi that way,
but too early so closed, and a big hill or few too,
down Quaker? or similar to Duke?
very big hill, and Duke not that fun,
Little River TurnPike,
high traffic and beginning rush hour,
so lots of trade offs, the WOD pretty much
only option, with some get offs, and
commercial options, but trail basically,
GWParkWay and Mt Vernon trail means going
all the way to the river,
a closer comparison to WODTrail,
but also rising sun and weekday commuting
rush out, narrow trail and
known accident potential,
early but not too, one plan had arriving
at sunrise, leaving before dawn,
but got an hour down or so,
showering and ate time,
packing and drop off things,
reCycling too..

Duke Street/around the train station,
Amtrak and commuter VRE, and MetroRail at
King Street, and decide to go left,
not up for the big ramp things,
part of the MixingBowl East i had done a lot,
and forgot it's name, bisects EisenHower Ave...

But turned left, a lot of lanes and
got out in the middle,
then complete when can see...
Honking and blind behind me?
was i going to get hit, some problems around there,
but not used to it had been and know the area,
but what changes?
and traffic not used to me either...

Gt into Carlyle and golden, fluffy and feathered,
older, dark face,
careful with old, could have peed on the
Carlyle Lion bike rack but she/he had too much class...
Picking on big cats may not be wise, idk...

Past the African American something history/heritage,
but didn't stop for a photo,
then how to get out of there,
a cemetery and Shilo Baptist,
turns out i've got to go back to Duke, high traffic
and fast, rush our, blind and someone cutting grass,
missed a flag type worker, doing some construction,
a stream back in there and a dead end t stop
residents only, but could a bike cut through?
idk and didn't find out,
which overpass/ way around the BeltWay?
all very complicated compared to WODTRail,
just go straight, no car bus/ truck traffic,
so getting annoyed and car fumes too...

ended up on Route One with ramps, some
double lane and getting fast,
45MPH, some bike pedestrian options
but far side, just stay in right lanes,
let people go behind me and be visible,
animated, and hope not to get hit,
stressed out commuters going to high speed
BeltWay, and not a good mix, for me...

Cloverleaf on/off ramps, and think i take
the left part, to Rt 1 Belvoir,
other things around and EastBound to the river,
turns out the left lane is a turn to Ft. Hunt Road,
try that, might as well, but Hills, again...
And getting tired, breathing? fumes from
mass car/ bus/ truck traffic
and remember to breathe, if could...

but made the left, up the hill,
don't remember it that hilly,
but a golf course/ country club,
Belle H(e)aven?
and getting narrow, on street parking,
and the little cross road getting to that...
debris and things to avoid...

Down to cross, construction, on the corner,
take a photo, and even over shoulder,
lights and traffic going, doing that on the move,
library, rec center, and more hills,
woman with a dog, and i can't talk,
something going on, neck and backpack,
and not making sense,
she gets concerned,
i was doing my same wanna be a sled dog,
but this a herder dog, and she's not getting
any amusement, from it, i guess she has to go,
why now, why today?
had heard i was coming and on the lookout?
why do i write things ahead?
why did i mention MTV previously?
and wondering how she knows me?
Blonde and older, could be clinical?
old memories down there,
and don't recall...
if i could even say...

But big hills on Ft Hunt,
it's between the ParkWay
and the Rt 1, so middle road,
sort of, traffic and scenery, to commercial
and high stress,
bisects, it but hilly,
not straight up Beacon Hill,
but not flat, and have to do many more miles
to rising sun on the river, which might have
had birds, ducks, fish, and scenery, but skipping that,
over and back and single lane, crowded oncoming
rush hour...

Debris too, and notice some pallets over the streams,
makeshift bridges, some strand of the pallet
broken a not 2x4 but thinner and not reinforced,
guess where you jump down it's too much for that
pallet wood, hit the middle and stud/ beam
might not break, but clever use of something,
reUse...

There is a path there too,
but not gotten to it,
and some tree branches, and other problems there,
tree roots, growth, etc blocking?
maybe some other time...

make the hill, and some mango nectar
at the top, before and choking on it,
after and have to pee,
sweating a lot so maybe not have to pee
whole trip, idk...

Well past some retirement Paul Springs?
and other things mostly residential,
some wideness, but some things to avoid too...

and off on SherWoodHall lane,
the've done something to the road at that intersection,
a bike lane and lots of markers? white plastic poles,
i'm going right on the ramp and traffic around,
so can't really stop, but photos while moving,
risk losing a phone dropping, and bad photos
but some reminder, to write up...

Maybe Bike Box like?
waiting and people doing a too sharp turn,
and hitting people waiting for the light(s)?
Visibility and being segregated at the stop,
some protection(s) as plastic things
an seen, as reflective white?
IDK try it the other way, but likely
go another way back...

Some hills on there, and a Mt V Presbyterian church
that held FriDay Nights Agape?
I missed seeing the church altogether...
somehow...
concentrate on getting up the hill(s)
and traffic?
debris, and trees/ branches?

But get over for Library and market,
politicos on the front edge going that way,
a map, and start taking photos?
not yet...

Walk around,
it's a double wide now,
takes over even more of the parking lot,
and instead of each on in a parking space stall,
section, vehicles and tables, right there,
one per, and going to the end and back up another
isle/ parking, well most of it...

Twin Springs Fruit Farm,
they are many places, Arlington, DC, etc...
and see what's there, walking in...

Find the market master tent, and a food sampling table
next to it,

ignored for a while?
woman in front of me, two at the table,
and somethings there, a sign, take a photo,

how much $10 minimum,
have different coins and a cold reception,
she's not the county wide person,
i'm relatively happy to get there,
even with the traffic/difficult trip,
and they are not happy to see me...

I'm an annoyance?

kid behind me,
going to see Bailey
the golden?
no yellow lab,
close...

and market master woman had golden too...

but do i want receipt(s), yes,
and have plastic colored tokens,
poker chips, not wood,
they still have wooden ones,
was thinking 3D printing plastics,
make your own/ mine your own bitcoin like,
but really laser cutting/ burning on wood,
a Hacker / DIY approach, highly illegal probably...
But amusing to think about...

and loop around the middle parking lot isle/row,
some prepared, take photos of displays,
woman in the way, buying stuff, or asking about,
and can't get all the prepared stuff
but too rich for my blood, have some EBT money,
but over the $10 i start out with,
and likely spoil getting home,
probably required microwave heating...

But keep for reference, like the
FoodPantry WareHouse
AFACWareHouseAndJennieDeanPark2022
last trip Wegmans nice prepared,
but even more expensive custom small business...
FM prices...

Pickling, talk weather with the guy there...
getting warm for me, going to get worse,
i'd be an even earlier than now,
0800a is late for me...
Wearing dress casual shorts, dark blue,
and reusing a couple hour/hour
in pink BtWD 2022 t shirt,
was saving for court, but needed something...
bike shorts would have been nice
and may live to regret that, chafing and damp...

Loop back around, and politicos,
TSFF
Grace's Bakery, would buy for StreetSense there,
and take into Writer'sGroup, but some of it
disagreed with me...
and wheat based, some reimbursed, a lot of it not...

And found Valentine's
saw on the way in, have had at two other markets
but pulled back, Mennonite, Amish light like,
plain but not plain, will do cars, technology,
so not as strict, normally wouldn't matter,
care about religion, but more local
Pennsylvania Dutch/ Amish and feels like home,
but not the same guy, a son/ relative,
and a kid, some people buying meats
in case, and a market master women
comes in you can't have that in here,
not bikes allowed or similar,
you'd have to park it over there,
you didn't say anything when i bought,
what about that pole, do i have to lock it,
i've bought from him before,
(old guy though)...
and can see it from there,
and she wants it over by the market master tent,
at the end,
controlling and nasty, it's not pleasant,
at all...
people are complaining,
what people?
there was a group of kids, like city urban
kids touring the market, with a class or something,
and busy and getting crowded,

so i prop it over by the market master behind it really,
on a pole, wondering if have to lock
takes awhile and a hassle, it's all been a hassle,

how much are the coconut macaroons?
$5
it's marked on there

even numbers are better
with tokens...

I'm trying not to touch things until i decide.

and we don't take tokens, cards, money only,

oh, yes we do,

i'd left by then, final straw
they don't like me,
don't want me there,
and not like old times,
and taken all the fun out of shopping...

I'd written my first published article
OdeToAFarmersMarket
OdetoaFarmersMarket
or similar
about one season ending
and trying a year round one
in Alexandria City...
with a photo of apples and cider
only done black and white...

and out to a recycling food mid sized trash/
not a personal feminine hygiene like Arlandria had,
but mid/ small wastebasket/ bucket,

salsa guy takes a photo of me leaving?
and someone counters that,
losing his market license for that,
for his kids,
and what right does he have?
had he actually talked to his kids
would have known not to take photos

So out of there,
got tokens/ chips,
so that done, but missed at least
seafood or buying something,
took two tries at AnnanDale to buy something,
but that was politicos yelling
this was nastier,
in a we against him type of way,
upper class white controlling women,
mixed citizens racial, ethnically,
and likely poorer, but producers,
farmers, owning land, large amounts of it,
growing things and livelihood,
selling directly to people, customers,
many of whom don't know where their food comes from,
this within 150 miles or so,
Orange, VA and WestMoreLAnd County,
Twin Springs Fruit Farm up in Pennsylvania,
iirc, and other places,
some more land and growing,
others more preparation and cooking,
like the prepared meals,
pickling and similar...

Canning like Chow Chow Amish Cheese
guy i haven't seen in a while,
Arlandria and West End...

Anyways, out to the road, Rt 1, busy traffic,
and up Beacon Hill, go out Mt V Square, where i used
to live and up to the school, up the back way, traffic
and heat, exhaust, and i't blocked off by fencing,
new aluminum square and locked gate,
old laundry/ discarded storage fenced area near trash
blocking it, but mowing and some way of getting through,
but not for me...

I wait by a teen left in a car,
driver mom went back in,
i guess, but i'm ignored, OK i guess,
even the mom coming back out,
sneaks in without even acknowledging me,
was going to ask if a break in the fence,
but likely none, had looked around for a way
up, not having to go back down,
another unsatisfying part of the trip,
no food, not welcome there,
and things changed, nothing local
i know is helping
outdated and old...

Walk most of the way back down,
brakes still a problem...
say blocked off to a big guy walking a dog,
and some other dogs backing, one in a car,
and another visiting, she's in heat?
and they like each other, maybe too much...

and down almost to where i lived in the complex,
go by and take a photo?
visit neighbors, if out and about?
or keep going,
turn around, missing a guy on the sidewalk
and follow behind a block,
out into parking lot,
and try other local knowledge,
a cut out getting out the back
pedestrian, bike only
no cars,
take a photo or couple,
had considered adding it to the bike map
focus group but left that to a local knowledge
only thing, less traffic, safety, privacy,

but went through and try and remember my trips that way,
out to the market, might have been some of them,
not going out to Rt1 and high traffic...

But a maze of residential streets,
all with names and stuff,, curving around
many/ most dead ending, court gives a guess,
dead end signs help, but i get out to one,
and start going UP,
go up hill, and may be a way from going
all the way back, up to the Unitarian Church,
but how? it's at the top of the hill,
but some intervening things, one may be loop,
all the way up and have to come back down,
again, but tree lined and cooler,
next to no traffic,
but if i have a problem, someone around,
weekday and a few people out...

a cut through, one side is signed and think
goes to the community pool, private, no trespassing
the other side not, is this an alleyway up the hill?
following a telephone/ gas line, something?
some places have that sort of thing,
instead of branching out and dead ending,
something cutting through and intersects,
but i'm going on, turn around, look
but not go,
a fence and seems into a private home,
so no...

Well lots of hills and a few changes,
jog right go left, remember names?
climbing mostly, contours of land work well,
sometimes, but residential mostly fans out
and stops, so not a lot of help there,
especially developments, want dead end
cul de sacs, usually some way in and out,
one way or multiple exits?

Streams in the middle, and would be through
routes, if had paths with them, like some places,
i'm thinking Falls Church in particular,
some streams and trails and parks go through
and a nice network, this an edge, Fairfax county,
developments, so might not, not wanting through traffic,
even bike ped, as HighWay and problem (read poor) people?
single family homes, and projects/ apartments,
forgetting some the class and likely race/ethnicity
distinctions so much, going river (very) rich
and highway poor...

But wander around awhile, and finally going down a hill,
decide to use data plan and look it up,
use maps which will eat some data, GPS helps,
but sweating so much getting things wet,
and didn't bring enough plastic bags,
to save the electronics from my sweat,
but find a Glasgow and Rebecca,
out to PopKins,

some LittleFreeLibraries, but not
model homes and books in them,
no library number designation,
one in particular take with the matching house

and out to highway, finally, but warm and dreaded,
Giant on the top, and get across,
a rush hour getting in,
looks like a group of seniors dropped off,
and i'm stuck in the wind tunnel behind them,
not bad that much air/wind,
but sweaty biker,
not that great for them?
use the hand sanitizer/ wipes,
handlebars and not touching things...

Saw someone with lots of teas,
Turkey Hill, and they are one sale,
3for$4, so buy three lemonades,
instead of tea,
two yellow, one raspberry,
and opening door and carrying up
to buy, self service, and back to
use the bathroom, some guy wants
to warn me of the heat while i'm packing up,
he's doing coupons, scanner, totals?

but mixed heat of open doors and
A/C but need to pack the cold in the
bright TJs cooler bag on the back,
and mix/ match move things around,
a paper to save from getting wet damp,
and some tub of caramels for snack
some snack bars, and bags,
insulated bag with in bags,
and other things....

if leaking then a problem, especially
over the duffel bag with clothes/
emergency, stuff...

But out of there in the increasing heat,
going to be 90 plus,
and 100 sometime during the week,
3 half gallons lemonade but needing to pee,
and other things,
out he back from there,
and out to TeleGraph,
VanDorn wouldn't be bad,
goes down hill, but might make it,
but forget about another hill onto
a main drag, a stop light at the bottom
and timing that, Fred FlintStone stop,
and get part way down that,

turns out a short light,
by the time i think i can get it,
and it's over, but ding ding,
and not hit crossing just after it turned,
thanking drivers with a wave,
and starting to feel the heat,

past CrossRoads, treatment,
never there, but know of it,
CornerStones and a similar C two word thing,
dyslexics and others might appreciate,
North and South County,
I commuted to North,
as Corner dual diagnosis (MH & Substance)
and Detox (starting out),
New Beginnings, at Walney
near crossing along Rt 50...

But KingsTown(e) and up hill,
in the mid day heat,
past 10am by now? and feeling it,
badly, no shade to speak of,
and older teen kids at the night getting in the way
one intentionally, and something about the Salsa guy
and have to go to (summer) school because of him/me
backing up into my way so i'd hit him

They would go that way, stores that way,
cooling off, i guess...

But i'm going Van Dorn,
and some trees further up,
but still hilly, didn't recall it that steep and
having problems, drank some,
maybe too much, and previous hills compounding,
going to be sick a health, call ambulance
problem afaict, and decide to bail at
Van Dorn metro, make it to the big down hill
under the beltway,
and trash truck stops in front of me,
i get in the shade of him, but pass
into the light, and T stop from BeltWay
not yet moving, and make it thought, and
start down the multi level hill,
hoping brakes are enough
and make the turn onto Eisenhower Ave...
and into the no access, buses only,
but up the curb for pedestrian
and conflicting too narrow before path,
sidewalk, skipped at ramp/ T stop light...

UPS plant and nearby waste/ trash
incinerator, and getting out of there...

Up a broken part of the curb,
no ramps as not onto bus loops,
and into shade, people coming out,
and how to pay, don't die on my station
sort of comments?

Reduced fare, wonder how much i've got,
or the $150 full fare given to me card
with food pantry and EBT SNAP...

Some people waiting on the platform,
talk of Childrens Museum and suggest
a place there, and give unsolicited advice
to the young woman and child accompanying,
and the girl eventually melts down,
and somehow it's my fault,
but the heat, they aren't in the shoes
for walking the mall, the mall is miles long/
if the triangle DC is 10 miles on edges diamond,
and look at how big the mall is on the map,
where are we, bottom left blue line
Van Dorn, King Street is a good thing to see,
and Yellow Line would give you a view
of the Potomac River,
and rental bikes/ scooters in the mall may
help, but wheel size and learn to ride those,
they have someone picking them up
and driving them when they get here,
Eastern Market is nice,
and some shops stores cafes near
Union station,

the Supreme court, something to see,
old people...

and the person who was helping them,
is going to call on me,
don't bother, he's disabled,
someone nearby has to read me or something,
and/or protective people, idk...

she's got an assignment, and they like
the kid at the market, somehow following me?
and/or online tracking?

he's going to die like grandpa,
or something she knows it,
and i've got to over hear all this?
about me?
dying?

well i've avoided the heat,
bailed to rail when i really didn't want to,
but best for health, earlier might have helped,
but it is what it is, and go by how i feel,
and that's not good, traffic, no shade
and fumes not helping, much less so on
WODTrail,
WODTrail2022
but the surprise if out of it,
as done it before...

Anyways, make it home, rail is cooler,
have to change lines myself, and
other things going out into the heat again,
and into A/C again,
finish the first lemonade of three,
and just collapse, no shower before
getting sleeping bag all sweaty,
turn on fan?
unloading, packing and cooling and charging,
eat later but just down, tired...
collapsing...

and write up in the mo(u)rning,
before dawn now light out,
well into the morning...

Live to bike another day?
So far...
