Introduction/Definition/etc

Looking at Shared Mobility Devices

aka BikeShare, eBikes, eScooters,

etc...

in the Warshington, DC metro area,

especially Virginia, with mention of others...

It's a wave/ trend/ kewl thing to do,

and other jurisdictions/ countries

are starting to, or way ahead of us,

while some places like Paris?

dumped them in the river

when first introduced, rejecting

and others tout it as the next

big thing in transit, visiting

tourists, and others supposedly

can share bikes, though utility,

kids, disabled, poor.

and many major obstacles

still exist to wide spread adoption,

instead of just try it once or twice,

and reject, due to cost, policies,

inoperable, and just plain targeting

by others...

Like Paris, I think some are ready to chuck the shares & dockless scooters in the river or something...

The eScooters I've seen many places where i would not want them, not allowed and some destroyed/broken and in the way/blocking streets and sidewalks.  Wearing helmets and sticking to rules of where they are allowed (onstreet  with cars, Not in parks, rules/laws largely ignored like skateboards) as they are being adopted seems to be one of the purpose(s) of the pilot besides a runoff among competing vendors, imnsho...
Full disclosure: I bought a cheap off brand small folding eBike about a year ago, using disabled status pushing the limits of access and acceptability as a wheel chair equivalent, informally.  I blogged about it, and CaBi crap, if you call it writing, more like public complaining on NoVAPeers.pbworks.com
I've seen articles (likely from here?) of mountains of stored and excess bikeshares in China? and one local Coop (VeloCity with at least one person posting on here, Ron?) sold off some that withdrew from the DC market, ofo iirc.

Arlington, Virginia, USA is still in a pilot

(unknown end date, but seasons end?)
of dockless eScooters
with several who have them around.
The competing companies
paid a fee to be considered and
number limited with payment.
Some parking like spaces
(paint sprayed on pavement)
of assorted dockless icons
near MetroRail stations
recently announced.
Not sure the rest of the DC
area jurisdictions,
but Arlington claims to be
forward thinking.
Arlington adopted bikeshare
before much larger
Fairfax County
~26? square miles, vs ~700 or so...).
though after DC...
I've seen several other companies
wandering thru towards DC and
Maryland going towards Baltimore.
University of Maryland iirc,
incorporated towns/cities, etc.
And Baltimore had docked
rental eBikes
before CaBi...
Not sure how one joins many
and gets across town
with so many competing,
but Monopoly abuse
seemed bad too...
I was a member of predecessor
bikeshare when DC had one pilot
(SmartBike?)
and when offered to lower income,
i joined again, but so on & off
it was very frustrating
bordering upon cruel...
CaBi now has some eBikes,
but I've not tried them,
as membership mysteriously
disappeared again...
WABA did a comparison of
bikeshares a while back, time, cost,
process to checkout / race type thing.
Sorry no links handy.
Like Paris, I think some are ready to
chuck the shares & dockless scooters
in the river or something...

Maybe the administrators and associated

parties with them, afaict...

The eScooters I've seen many places
where i would not want them,
not allowed and some destroyed/broken,
many left on, turned over, and abandoned,
and in the way/blocking streets and sidewalks.
Wearing helmets and sticking to rules of
where they are allowed (onstreet  with cars,
Not in parks, rules/laws largely ignored
like skateboards) as they are being adopted
seems to be one of the purpose(s) of the
pilot besides a runoff among competing vendors,
imnsho...
Full disclosure: I bought a cheap
off brand small folding eBike
(250 Watts) about a year ago,
using disabled status
pushing the limits of access
and acceptability as a
wheel chair equivalent, informally.
I blogged about it, and CaBi crap,
if you call it writing, more like public
complaining on NoVAPeers.pbworks.com
I've seen articles (likely from world wide bike
collectives TheThinkTank list) of mountains
of stored and excess bikeshares in China?
and one local Coop (VeloCity with at least
one person posting on here, Ron?)
sold off some that withdrew
from the DC market, OFO iirc.

edit/cleanup, find links and

put up on NoVAPeers.pbworks.com

Personal energy dependent.

What's Missing?

Personal experience using the

eScooters and competing devices,

as takes a call phone that is contracted

not prepaid, and money, which is

in short supply...

What Can Be Found?

many shared mobility devices littering

edges of sidewalks, turned over

and lights going, abandoned

on trail areas, and generally

a nuisance...

What Can Not Be Found?

easy (subsidized/ sliding scale)

access for the poor,

and disabled,

apparently not written into contracts

like with Housing and eventually docked

devices...

How To Analyze?

Lenses

Companies

We can make money,

need to dominate the market

and win the contract...

Teens

They say you have to have a license

to rent them, can't we just get

mom and dad to buy us one?

Maybe Grandma/GrandPa/

Aunts/Uncles will help...

They will probably say

what are my grades?

get a job, actually do

my chores/ homework

and use allowance for it,

but I don't think that's going

to work, I've got x,y,z coming

up and not enough...

PreTeen

That's kewl,

Let me try

Mom!

He won't share...

General non riding public

can i just throw it in the trash

or recycling? It's littering my

sidewalk, i need to mow/

blow the leaves and snow is coming,

do you know what happens

when snow plows and blowers

hit a charged battery?

Law Enforcement

Someone's going to die

on those things,

nobody is taking the laws

seriously, they are in with

things weighing tons

and they have such small

wheels, are going to go

head first into something

with potholes, curbs, and normal

tree root bumps being dangerous...

I don't even have good laws

to cite people with,

and case law/ my colleagues

are not getting much convictions,

we are told to take the kids

and devices to the parents

but there must be a better

way...

Can't i just shoot it?

How about immobilize

(taze)  it?

Environmentalists

They are all competing

and littering our parks,

noisy little bastards

scared my deer, birds,

dog, and even the cat

won't have anything to

do with them...

We should outlaw them,

session is coming up,

wonder who could

be the patron...

Government

Newish device class,

and shared, so companies

trying to lobby and get contracts,

lock in on theirs being the only

one, largely the same, but

competition, unlike cable companies,

and other problems...

Parking is scarce in urban areas,

some of these are smaller,

and lighter, if a license is required

to operate/ check out then

only people who know the rules of

the road would be allowed,

and sanity might happen,

above my pay grade...

Pass the buck,

will see, nobody is going

to make a decision,

we had to do something,

i hope nobody gets hurt/

killed as VisionZero would

apply to them too...

I better get my resume

together, between that

and the shutdown,

it's getting bad->worse

around here...

I wonder what Amazon

is doing with/about them...

Maybe use to patrol the

border...

Nah, too dangerous...

I've got a meeting anyways,

have to put this on the back

burner, for now...

Assumptions

Biking and innovation are good,

right?

Rentals being rentals, are problems,

and sharing without attendants?

Who and how do they check them

over?

Charging done by some customers

who earn money/time on them,

companies also recharge,

and wonder why they don't have

solar panels, on the pads, they could

charge themselves sitting out in the sun,

well, price point, maybe gen2.0...

Time Limits

Seasonal limits

as snow starts?

I've not seen the time

limit for the Arlington

competitive pilot,

or not handy...

Alexandria just announced

(with Lime) and are going to limit

at the end who can operate

in their jurisdiction...

I'm not in DC much,

but had first noticed dockless

and eBikes rentals,

though not the resources to

try them, been following

and spotting them,

in case i ever do...

CaBi added a Plus

or Premium eBike to their

fleet, and seen some around,

mostly I just get pictures,

and move on, especially

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

All the data, lookups

not in yet, and likely never will be...

But preliminary prejudging

based on no actual experience

on the eBike and eScooter

Rentals are that they are nuisance,

riders, likely dumping them whereEver/

WhenEver,

and irresponsible, like most thought

skateboarders (and bikers) were/are...

There is/was an opportunity to be

civil about it, but like Bikers,

to Car, Walkers/Pedestrians,

a few bad behaving have

ruined the reputation for the many,

and likely when in the pilot feedback,

if not moderated, will be the end

of it, for all...

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

Have you tried them?

Or too young?

Not a driver yet,

cannot afford,

parents/ etc won't let you,

and can not wait,

wonder if they will still be around

in years for me to try

when i get old/rich enough....

top speed?

safe enough at that speed,

not feel unstable,

or is that the goal?

What have you heard about them?

Anyone you know own one,

instead of shared?

What did they think of it?

Did you get to try it?

What's the cheapest

bestest (it exists, right?), etc

you have found?

What sources/ testing was used

to reach that conclusion?

Ever skateboarded?

How does the eScooter compare?

Ever get a ticket for it?

Hurt?

Wearing Pads/Gloves/Helmet???

How much?

From where?

and battery?

battery life?

charger?

Wheel replacement?

Missing parts?

Repair places?
