Saturday June 25,  27, 2009 in the afternoon, OnOurOwnBaltimore had

an open house  for the Dundalk Center and annual meeting.  Seems

like maybe what RRWG could become, as OOOMD has been around

since, well,  they started it...  27 28 years or so ago... Check the announcement

that I'll paste in the title link page above, and get into [my experience with] it more...

Conclusion

Summary of Jerry's experience or similar:

On Our Own of Baltimore has about 5 centers (ADDENDUM: 6 w/ young adult) in the Baltimore metro area,

not unlike RRWG people starting or funding now 5 centers in the Washington

Metro Area, not counting DC nor Maryland side of the Potomac, though

IdaMaeCambell.org may be a distant cousin (whom I forgot to mention

in my last blog like entry on the ArlingtonCommunityForum :-/ )

Anyway, greeting was nice, first open room on the left going up elevator

in a mostly empty wing of a newly renovated office like building,

(which someone told me used to be apartments ADD  still some upstairs), there were some people

and chairs setting up, a banner of the Annual Meeting, so I plunked

my stuff in the back Networking room and was escorted to sign in in the

regular center down the hall on the right.  Use the right column for new people,

and I signed in my disoriented transportation assistance also anonymously...

Back to the setup area, after noticing the chairs were door store

like treatment facility type chairs...  An odd observation, but

I was trying to avoid eating too much, as had just eaten

and went elsewhere for most of the time...

Fast forward, past meeting the paid staff women working on setting

up and resetting up the raffle prizes (OOOMD has a tradition of

giving raffle gifts to participants, and this was no exception,

a good idea to do at the end, and people stay through the businessy meeting

when not down at the comic shop and coffee bar in the think urban renovation

Shirlington like area in South East Baltimore City/ County dock warehouse like (ADD: mainly RESIDENTIAL)

area complete with parks, churches, senior community centers and other

interesting things I didn't have time to explore...

So talking with people as they setup, I was almost on time at 1 pm,

but we were on consumer time, waiting for vans and people

transported from centers.  Who am I?  Some crazy (ADD:  Baggy) guy

who biked to OOOMD conference (a later board member

remembered, and a few others from a food retreat event

organized by SilverSpringDropInCenter,

though not sure if it was that biking or the

trauma of 2 CWC [ADD: CWC OOOMD Conf Pictures, On Our Own of Maryland, CWC]

people going in the hospital on something I didn't really have control over, though

seemed to be responsible, somehow...)

Anyway, young lady organizing and reorganizing

is a young mom (I am name impaired, and could look it up

but will try not to embarass myself nor others),

and we talk while Tony and others wander in and out of the room,

some losing phones, pre-presenting gitters, or whatever,

I won't get diagnostically challenged at the moment...

So speakers/ program coordinators (not sure the exact titles)

we call them Presidents/ Board Members, Exec Directors,

but in Maryland they are like franchises off of one central organization

that reports better relations with funders...  In Martyland, CSA

is CSB (Community Service Board) like, Core Service Agency,

or some such...

I've very loosely followed Maryland activities when possible.

SilverSpringDropInCenter.BlogSpot.com has been a personal refuge

at times, a home away from home, center of (ADD among]  centers but I have some issues

with it being more of a provider based system, besides a few personalities,

it's about as old as CWC and the early centers in NoVA, but is still working

on creating the independent consumer board, afaict, as an offshoot of

ASante group, a provider MH center, and runs afterschoolish,

like OOOFC starts out of PRS day program/ old name Social

Center/ Fountain House model business....

Having talked with someone starting/growing in Richmond

at the VOCALNetworkConf2008, it occured to me that we

are all separate 501c3 or at least wannabees, or in process,

but both Maryland and CSPNJ, our founding template models have stronger

state [ADD  Regional] organizations (and been around a lot longer, decades to years)

and drop in centers, or self help centers or empowerment

centers, are branches of those orgs, instead of separate

legal entities?  Not sure the exact specifics but comparative

[ANALOGY religions] organizations/ philosophies are worth noting

as we swing and argue over money recently.  Maybe the

pendulum swings back toward reunification even though

providers meet without us and seem to be trying to kill

the regional focus that started this RRWG and other

stuff like centers, hopefully branching into housing.

peer run and peer run transportation, but might hear more

judgement stuff today...

Anyway, each center [ADD: Program Coordinators] gave a report, with special note

that they run a youth group as well.  One of the centers/

locations is targetted at 18-25 year olds.  What an IDEA! [ADD: !!!!]

So people were friendly, if not curious about what I was

doing there from Virginia, and I said we learn from you guys/

gals, as starting centers, went to visit OOO Montgomery County,

in Germantown/ Gaithersburg (I always confuse the G's)

and to be truly [ADD: truely?] regional, can't ignore DC and MD...

as funding is different streams but c/s/x are dealing with similar

issues across the borders...  Poverty, marginalization,

empowerment, advocacy, etc [ADD:  bureaucracy?], but maybe people were [ADD:  mainly] partying,

but I didn't notice the fighting type stuff we have too much of

in NoVA at that event, maybe what helps them survive and cooperate

as we hope to do?

I volunteered to / assumed the traditional role of taking pictures,

my usual niche role, but my photos were not very good,

from the back of the room and not flashing with an old hobbyist's

camera but I sent 2x CDRs of 70+MB of photos including the

posed group shots [to Dunnaway (or similar, I really am name impaired)]

I suggested creating group shots at the end,

and it may make it in their newsletter,

and hope to catch up with people when possible.

It's been a couple of years since

the OOOMD state conference in Cumberland/

Rocky Gap, MD, so getting the longitudinal sampling view,

but good for trends and to see people again plus meet new

c/s/x across the borders/ Baltimore Bay

draw bridges/ tunnels (I confuse those too), etc...

Maybe with Peer Transit NoVA groups can

go visit and we create something friendly

competition/ social activities?

CSPNJ is a longer ways away, but I've seen

the new Ph.D Doc [ADD  Consumer] leader is / was presenting recenly

elsewhere too and we should have invited NJ and MD

to our openings and events, just as for

ECNV and other contributors to the formation

of Drop In Centers in NOVA...

.

Thanks for the help and hope some feedback

is useful...  NoVA didn't follow everything

suggested, but we have build off of the

shoulders of giants...
