One Laptop Per Child olpc.org
Having gone to the new RRWG funded site [(what did that cost?
and why so close to providers?)] monthly meeting and
hearing about possible funds for Assistive Tech communication
hardware, the following One Laptop Per Child,
Give One Get One limited time offer seems worth noting.
There is one week left (from 20071120?) [SEE BELOW] to bye[&buy] for ~$400 US,
a newly designed notebook computer intended for children
in developing countries but possibly useful for domestic
and consumer use?
Jokes about provider paternalism[/maternalism] aside, this is a small cheap computer
with advanced capabilities worth exploring [(like mesh networking)] for posslble use domestically
and in the consumer & newbie population. The ~$400 donation sends
one laptop to a developing country child (w/ ~$200 tax [deduction] benefit)
and one here to your kid (age and verification?),
for a limited time offer and a tmobile or other such communication
company gives a year subscription [(almost the value of the second machine)],
which might help in the needed [regional] communication for safety,
reporting remotely on consumer recovery and many other issues.
The hand cranked power [and solar] (optional?) for areas without
electricity might come in handy bike touring in the underdeveloped
areas to conferences, on public transit, [conference rooms without
plugs handy, on the road display tables,] etc.
I know I want one but can not afford it in one of the richest counties
in the 'developed' world...

20071126 ADDENDUM:
According to PBS Newshour MacNiel Lehrer's broadcast on
Thankgiving day (which also contained a piece on Sustainable
Agriculture and Farmers Markets including in Fairfax County
on the last day of the season and a few clips with my old bike
on a tree in the beginning and end of the segment) on OLPC with
Negraponte (who mentioned wikis) addendum said that the offer
is extended to ~Dec 31, but supplies are limited iirc...
Personally, I think they should continue the offer indefinitely,
as the relatively well to do Americans can continue to buy,
donate machines and help develop software and hardware
accessories for kids the world over which means more free
laptops for kids elsewhere... Not sure how these compare
with Nintendo DS, Gameboy and other toys that kids seem
to be addicted to in the states, but an educational machine
theoretically could contain more 'edutainment' like DopeWars ;-}
