RPiTouchScreenDisplay2018

from

Introduction/Definition/etc

Some experience with a 7 inch

touchscreen display for the RPi,

currently RPi3,

but might work on others

(Zero-2?)...

Body

Original Text

A clearance/open box incomplete item I bought

for more portable RPi use, having seen Kano in a box,

at much more, and $100+

iirc, limited holiday supply, at Target

/Strike and BestBuy /Strike .

MicroCenter doesn't seem to carry Kano,

just Canno kits, afaict...

A risky purchase, and flack from someone there,

set it down,

maybe staff, said i would have problems with it,

They had to order a whole other box of displays,

or maybe just predatory sales wanted to sticker it,

so many trips going back for a discounted open

box clearance, seen previously, but not bought,

there are two manufacturers Element14,

and another (RS Components?).

This is the more limited one,

at least in the states, and more expensive,

so some differences may exist,

but not well documented...

Also need a case, and seeming to nickel and dime

me a bit, as needed a display cable, described elsewhere,

another $5+ getting a smaller PiZero one,

instead, used the camera one, for a regular RPi2-3

but firmware and other issues may exist,

those cables are weird,

and connecting them weirder still...

TouchScreen Keyboard

in accessories menu from the top left

RPi main menu, on Raspian, or

maybe I had to add it in system installs...

Confusing sometimes if i'm on an Android,

or the RPi, but I've got a full OS underneath,

not just a pretty face on

like Android which is Java mixed, with

some special gDrug sauce on top of a Linux kernel...

Even Linux isn't much but the core OS aka kernel.

Though people think it is everything built on top of the kernel.

Distributions like Raspbian add

GNU/ Free Software Foundation utilities,

tools, and applications/

programs like LibreOffice/

previously StarOffice, etc,

Browsers like

 Mozilla Firefox, or Chromium

(gDrug's Chrome - special sauce)

to make it useful..

But back to the issues of keyboard and moving around,

smaller fonts, can't make out everything,

some problems seeing text in terminal windows,

and games like mahjongg tiles,

on lower resolution than HD, really not much,

no where near 4k interpolated, or not,

of AnUnEventfulWeekend2017  oops,

a previous page one was supposed to be

Eclipsed2017

but this one meaning

EKENH9ActionCamera2017

so some degradation expected...

Check the Samsung tablet of similar size,

and other screens,

there was an option to take a screen

from an old laptop, buy a display board,

say on eBay and

for $35 or so

plus shipping and risk, have something else,

maybe next time...

The teacher in that video, in his basement,

had his wife's laptop too,

i guess they bought two of the same thing,

(Domestic Parity?)

and he risked the ~$35 and kludged it together,

translated the default Chinese to change the settings menu

and had a working machine, no touchscreen, iirc,

just an output display...

Find Link...

So resolution differences, wondering if on a tablet,

but able to laydown, instead of in front of a bigger monitor,

so better, for more relaxed typing and viewing,

with full keyboard option(s) as has a USB, or 4 ports...

The case makes it upside down,

as cables coming out the bottom,

and a foot/ stand like thing on the top,

I've not changed to flip it around,

if that is possible,

and two colours (black, like Fords and White,

If those extremes are even considered colours,

or all and nothing, on the $20 case,

mostly plastic,+ a little hardware

(= screws, etc)

a pop out  RPi logoed back with gaps for venting?

Wall mount areas?

and removeable to get to the GPIO pins,

and thru plug holes that fits

with the form factor, not miniITX,

but the standard RPi defines,

other things like variants, and deviations

might work too, but check to be sure,

the location(s) of the cables,

and ports might be different, plus airflow,

with a warm screen, rather heavy actually,

metal (steel?) backing,

and pulled out screw places tabs

(think Pentagon 9/11 Memorial raised above

(deadly lack of) water benches/seats)

the bolt equivalents make it not the same as,

and plastic case isn't the rugged an option I'd want

to carry it around, plus matching size foldover

keyboard, like a netbook,

to keep it as a harder case to prevent the screen

from getting scratched/ cracked, etc,

or even touching something while on like logout,

or buy, or whatever dangerous type things

you might activate, by mistake, when left on,

no real sleep mode, iirc....

I also bought, for about $3-5 a set of heatsinks,

to cool off the two main chips, CPU and

ethernet chips,

though memory and other are on there,

maybe something I will find out later, software, OS

memory card, or connectivity/ bugs causing

my problems,

of system just stops, also possible

the google crap still on for the Voice AIY

maybe changes things as some HACKING.md

type baggage changes how you access this,

so maybe special souace, screen saver, and

locking mechanisms, besides taking commands

from cell phones (Mosquito?),

and other open ports problems likely....

Modified Text

What's Missing?

My open incomplete box was missing

a DSI? ribbon cable

4 jumper wires (Power? Brightness? Contrast? Ground?)

Instructions (not listed on the MicroCenter website)

What Can Be Found?

Some brass? Printed Circuit Board standoffs

Screws and other hardware seen elsewhere

in RPi and Arduino kits.

What Can Not Be Found?

Easy comparisons of resolutions v. cost and availability...

People who can be bothered to lookup RPi

How To Analyze?

Lenses

Might need new lenses with that screen after a while...

Manufacturers

Users

DIY Hobbyists

Assumptions

Reasonable prices help consumers and therefore the market/ecosystems...

Time Limits

Progress marches on, maybe 4k?

OctoCore?

Might be the link,

there are several with those search terms,

So do your own research, and fact checking,

Who knows, you might learn something...

Gaming nurse? "Players allowed"?

Showing putting together an RPi and touchscreen display for classic RetroPi arcade use.

Comments mention lightning bolt on bootup means under powered.

Likely the second of the links above,

I had to remove tracking from the link,

but still might be in the url,

not the displayed text...

Powering RPi

3Amp QVS? MicroUSB  power supply

Possibly related to brown outs?

2.5Amps  max draw is the usual

but display+USB keyboard, etc

needs some current too

Heat sinks for RPi

At least 2 manufacturers,

adafruit is one,

I got the other,

Size and metal, thermal tape included

(Remove backing, likely Destroys

the board to take heatsink back off,

So place carefully and check HAT, Bonnet, etc

clearance and orientation = fin direction)

As all they had, and

Such a hidden/disorganized DIY section,

so you have to ask sales, so they can belittle,

harass,sell unneeded addons,

and could sticker at that...

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

Lower resolution and heavier than I would have liked,

price still seems high, but not as much as the 10 inch

Kano and others, so more to learn, and

get down to specs, like resolution,

DPI (Dots Per Inch)

and geeky style jargon most don't know

nor care about anyways...

But with most graphics how it looks is immediately

apparent, if outside the box, put together and running something you actually use..

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

What resolution is required for older humans?

Cats?

Mice?

other insects?

Darwin?

If 8 bit was good enough for us growing up,

(see AtariFlashBackPortable2017

which RiteAid went down to 1/4 list of $60

while Micro Center stayed high, and standard a/v micro headphone to RCA works for audio and likely composite video out)

or not, why do we need so much now?

Progress and planned obsolescence?
