Introduction/Definition/etc

So following

ThereIsSomeThingWrongInWhoVille2019

and

AlaNotIntCon2018

not sure how involved i want

to be with it

but went to another mandatory training

to volunteer with kids...

and musing about how the training

system can/ would be changed,

if i were king/queen/

HadMyDruthers,

sort of...

Body

Original Text

Sadly it's been a read the boring

legalease (sp?)

for years, and taking turns reading

a nonsensical document,

which is apparently

a legal requirement,

but other parts of the training/

signup / finger printing card,

child abuse reporting and

other type training,

for 3-4 hours

mandatory every 3 years?

but i generally go each year,

little to no support for

"group sponsoring"

and given i got into it following

TheShortOfIt

wondering what kids are going

through these days,

it's not the world i grew up in,

bullying got worse,

online CyberBullying2020

included, so once home,

still get crap over the internet wires,

even as an adult

YouTube stupid?/harassing comments

besides the numerous porn like

account names associated/ commenting

from my postings on SailingTubers2021

channels, etc...

BlendedHyBridMeetings2021

aren't in the regulations/ rules/

policy /procedures for the organization(s),

and all sorts of other problems...

So someone trying to decide if it is for them,

has to sit through what may amount

for torturous type training, for hours,

to see if suitable?

Maybe changing it to more experiential,

we aren't holding up progress, can't get out

of there until went through all 30+ pages

of readings, and eBook manual,

and any questions are keeping people

late, interrupting, in a didactic format,

outhouse presenters, from other parts

of the state lecture us on how things

are so much better there,

which really they aren't,

Norther Virginia has many pluses,

some including many districts,

/jurisdictions, generally higher cost of living

some supports not found elsewhere,

12Step clubs with more than

just AA and NA,

some other associated programs,

ACA, AlaNon, and a plethora (sp?)

of other spin off programs

Clutterers, Debtors, Messies,

AffectiveDisorder

and many aren't active, but have had,

and a BigBook for many of those exist,

a Bookstore/Gift Shop used to

exist, in a couple incarnations over the

decades, i don't go there anymore,

after problems with a coffee bar drunk

bar maid, conflicts with an NA meeting

and they took over /s witched rooms,

and other problems...

after 20+ years of going there,

anyways, old wounds/ resentments,

used to be workshops on generic

12Step any program work on steps

Open Mic night(s)

i did internship there,

after a private hospital one,

and didn't like LockDowns/

medical model,

etc

Anyways, experiential

learning works better for moi,

and likely  others,

i can pretend to be a child,

and role play,

many people don't know how a

Teen meeting differs from an

adult meeting, so actually model

that process, you are a designated

new teen in a teen meeting,

the trainer(s) will be the AMIAS/

Group Sponsors, and you experience it

for an hour+ time, and do a fishbowl,

experiential after training /questions on it,

from greeting, to exclusions,

only allowed in if a teen, designate

(preteen, closed meeting)

an honorary teen, here's your name

tag, and age, assigned,

and keep it closed, only teens and

AMIAS allowed in the room,

and handle the things that typically

come up, a parent trying to sit in on

the meeting, a sibling, older, younger,

etc, and how that may play out,

and actually model the good behaviors

and maybe some bad ones

too, of the AMIAS in that role,

how to gently / assertively keep

it a closed meeting.

Kids with smart phones,

rings, and group conscience

was no phones during the meeting,

getting started on the meeting format

it's about start time: who's chairing?

and what are the readings

what are/ is a Goodie/Baddie/

Happy Crappy and why calling it

something else is a problem

What happens when someone like

me talks a lot, done on purpose,

how to stay on topic, handle

interruptions, and redirect,

daily readings/

finding a meeting topic

from what was shared,

what brought us here,

basic family / drinkers history,

how it effects me/ the family,

but keeping the focus on me/child,

its a kids meeting, kids run the meetings,

and learn skills along the way,

officers/ Chair,

Treasurer,

Secretary,

Group Rep (GR),

what are those roles,

how to volunteer

what are the requirements?

how long in program?

how old?

any exclusions?

Interruptions from outside the group,

someone trying to listen in at the door,

and seen, call whom? who goes to talk to/

enforce privacy/ confidentiality,

anonymity (oddly annoy seems in their

to dyslexic/ transporting brain(s)),

and how to pronounce those

words, if not used to them,

nor adult, reading level(s),

say for 6-7 year olds?

(or even some adults)

and what they mean,

the reading of must legally report

harm self or others (other wording)

child abuse and what a mandatory

reporter is, what they do and how?

but what about bullying?

from adults/ kids/ others in the area?

safety problems

and on through

Half Time/ 7th Tradition

pass the hat/ basket

handling the money

what donations, i didn't know

oh, we put in the basket

$1 or so / (more in adults, btw)

meeting to help cover

expenses

and/or someone drove the kid(s)

teens there, and permission slips/

authorizations, notarized, etc

closing the meeting,

managing the time,

but realizing it's a kids meeting

they run the meetings,

leaderless is one of the technical

clinical names/ mutual support

a given suggested meeting format,

and what that means,

how it's been modified,

someone talks about something

that is not program, and way off base/

age appropriate/

how to handle?

someone falls asleep/

walks in drunk like?

educational and might not happen,

but training experientially (sp?),

closed meeting, that was my dad/

mom/ they will sober up in the car,

taking the keys, calling a

trusted friend, taking the bus/

getting a ride home/ DWI/DUI

etc

Someone's got weed/ drugs/

how to handle,

etc...

Various surprises, and how to handle,

first hand, someone takes turns being

the AMIAS, did we get permission

for a guest, we were looking for

some substitutes do the kids agree?

vote in a new person/ volunteer/

adult...

Overcontrolling the group,

over sharing as an adult,

a teacher/ religious person

tries dominating the group,

brings in Religion/

Clinical/ other "outside issues"

while this is not group psychotherapy

nor even Certified Substance Abuse

Counselor classes some of those

techniques may be useful,

and accounting for the basket/

7th tradition, a spreadsheet/

worksheet, monthly rent,

how that is handled,

adults keep the money between

meetings, and kids do the accounting

the treasurer

the secretary does the We Care/

phone list, say it snows, what

is the phone tree/ who calls/

emails whom

What of the reporting between

meetings, say revolving AMIAS/

group sponsors how does one

sponsor who wasn't there that

week know what's likely next week?

reporting out anonymously,

we had 5 kids, 2 new,

and used up the welcome packets,

need to get more, we took in

$5 today and have a balance/

treasury of  $31.07

an need to buy Welcome Packets

a new daily reader, (which one?

teen ODAT/ red or blue, )

maybe a Courage to Be Me would help,

and someone needs to donate cookies,

as have a young person, and meetings

are always better with snacks

except for the overeater/ diabetic,

someone's got peanut allergies, etc...

cant be near any of that stuff,

on to closing the meeting

serenity prayer/ declaration,

leaders choice,

hot next meetings are planned

what AMIAS typically say to each

other after the meeting

securing the area/ clean up,

chairs and literature put away,

Covering a missing AMIAS

Weather changes, vacations,

etc

Conferences, how long "in program"

how much

how old,

permission slips, travel,

costs, what to bring, what not to bring,

conference "rules"

etc

or the whole group goes home,

early ending the fun...

etc. variations

and proprietary type stuff omitted,

Modified Text

What's Missing?

how boring a reading of the rules/

Kid(s)

i was just told i had to be here,

like dad/mom/etc who got

court ordered to AA

for DWI...

doing my time,

how do i get out of here?

Dis/Diss/Dys/Hiss/Etc

Generally disabled are excluded,

oddly, as many have some traits

that would/could be helpful,

ADD/ADHD common in kids/

and adults,

Dyslexic,

Autistic,

Manic/ Depressed/

Self Harm/ Cutting

many are topics and behaviors

kids also have

but not harming the kids...

Most don't know/ hear about

12Step and other confidential support

groups/ training/ therapy

Public OurRach and

Institutions and other coordinating

and some programs say AlaNon

would be 2-3-5x the size of

AA and AA is huge size wise,

given family size and people affected

by drinkers many more would be larger,

but somehow are not, why?

Why Not?

Assumptions

haven't disclosed

any personal stories,

anonymity is protected

procedural and policy trainings,

not dump and run type sharing(s)

Time Limits

Generally meetings are about an Hour

trainings were scheduled for 4 hours,

rotating who is an AMIAS

could be  done and started again,

second hour, next meeting,

rotate role playing many different ways?

some have to experience to learn,

and going to an open meeting

is likely required for many training

in Substance Abuse,

Nursing, Law Enforcement

court ordered, etc...

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

Some ideas based on now years of experiences

with the training, but really don't want to

volunteer to be the trainer, ironically...

From previous experience,

clinical and group,

given the reactions, my own

included, there must be a better

way...

I've suggested a few,

but likely not going to change

anyone(s) else...

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

What experience(s) have you had/

can you share about 12Step?

Other Treatment modalities?

How is confidentially protected?

Who's the thought police?

what do they do?

Why would Teachers

and Preachers likely be bad

at this task/ volunteer job?

What assumptions on/

in those

careers make it so?
