Introduction/Definition/etc
SAMHSA misses the boat again...

Body
While some people think the term recovery is vague, and I found it to be
almost unoperational for the Regional Recovery Work Group
it was so broad a definition and so personal that is seemed like a buzzword,
something created to change funding, but not entirely for the better,
as Providers never gave up enough control and sabotaged
Consumer / Survivor and Ex-patient efforts to self direct...
Also, SAMHSA is leaving out the third party in this debate,
Intellectual Disabilities. I'm seeing the same issues in the ID
community, mostly Autism Spectrum related as I see with
Mental Health and Substance Abuse.
If ID is not Recoverable, then why do ABA
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Applied_behavior_analysis ) at all?
If you can take Self Direction from the ID community,
why can't people in the ID community and across those
arbitrary definitions live better lives?
Especially with late onset disorders like Aspergers,
how is one supposed to get better, if Recovery Is Not Possible?
What of the people who are all Three? MH, SA AND ID?
Do they get shuffled between the silos?
Instead of one umbrella?
Disjointed systems and services just confuse even the best of social
workers, and what of the people who define their own services,
or provide their own care, perhaps with fiscal agents, and oversight?
And to NOT think that people, ALL People need Housing,
Food, Meaningful activity, not just sheltered work/ sweatshops,
is basically discriminatory...
Olmstead (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olmstead_v._L.C. )
has been applied from the ID community to MH
and probably Substance Abuse, so how can you create an artificial
partition on some people's hopes and dreams?
You can get better, but you can't because some doctor
labeled you one thing, but you another, or
the definitions changed, in DSM x+1
(for x = 1... IVTR)
Most autistics might balk at being lumped in with
Mental Health, many have created their own services
and communities where the provider community
and parent and other communities have met their own
needs more than the people they were supposed to serve...
If Depression is a Spectrum, as more recent research is
guessing, Bipolar I, 2, etc, Cyclothymic, Major Depression,
Recurrent, Dysthymia, and so forth, and Autism is a
Spectrum disorder with a whole range of skills and abilities,
deficits, and basically attributes, arbitrary as they may
seem, Selectively Mute is not Dumb, it's a communication
disorder, just as Sign Language compensates, and Braille
compensates, writing maybe for verbal, visual for auditory,
auditory for visual, kinesthetic for verbal, etc,
people's skin color comes in all shades, and spots too,
as do the abilities, interests and hopes and dreams of
people, aspirations should not be toyed with, regulated,
defined and ignored, as frequently happens in the service
systems SAMHSA funds and is responsible for...
