Body
Thanks I hadn't run across this,
and I'll share the link out with
some other groups, who may
or may not have seen it,
many are living some part of it
and probably haven't had the time.
Wretches and Jabberers is a movie
people might want to see.
It's Autism related and I met the director
on a screening in Washington DC
and they had the DVD at Autreat
(peer run national retreat) over that summer.
I've blogged my experiences there
more than a couple times...
Generally, people/ the public seems
to think the only disabilities are the ones
people see, i.e. physical disabilities,
and well pronounced and difficult,
(I was in a manual wheel chair
for a bit with broken toe and horrendous
3-4 hour public transit commutes
between alexandria/ Mount Vernon
VA (South County) and North County
Government Center (we called it the Taj)
to do a lot of the create drop in centers
$1.5 million / year state money stuff I
mentioned and the NoVAPeers.PBWorks.com
site started up on,
and back out of a wheel chair,
when most are stuck in one for life
(think electric chair) then paratransit
sent a taxi that ran over my feet as I was
getting my baggy stuff out of the back seat..
It seemed intentional assault with a ton
vehicle to me
Basically, Door and Curb are 4 letter words
(to put it mildly and be PC about it),
and people are all taller and looking down
on you, literally, the Segway guy invented a
very expensive chair the iBot that climbs
stairs and lifts one sitting up to the height
of standing people, but at $30k
most but Christopher Reeve can't afford it.
(I'm hoping for an eventual open source/
open hardware version)
For those that haven't experienced some of it,
it's kind of like the cruelty that
abused people would rather be
physically hit rather than the
emotional trauma.
I get so often "you don't look
disabled" but they don't see me
on bad depressed days (only had
relatively few while @ G!I, the getting
out somewhere different helped
somewhat) and only on the relatively
good days do I venture out,
otherwise arguments and down
and depressed and things go
really ending in bad or broken
relationships.
Bummer, and people don't generally
consider nor want hear what it's like
and wonder why you aren't happy,
like the party comments on the video...
Most just seem to withdraw into
their own worlds and stay only within
the disabled community...
YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary)
