Introduction/Definition/etc

Sailing Alone Around The World

by J(oshua) Slocum

trip completed before 1900

(as one visiting Lady suggested

he be at Paris Expo in 1900)

An eBook,

though there are audio, etc formats

available at least one nearby library

system...

Body

Original Text

Along with

VendeeGlobe2020

a race around the world,

running concurrently to reading

this, btw,

and it turns out down time,

mostly autosteering,

lashing the wheel/tiller,

although used another term,

Spray, his personally rebuilt

oyster boat, rather old

and a carcass (sp?)

pretty much donated to him,

by an old local captain,

perhaps as a bet?

and added about $500

(a lot back then) to rebuild,

spent the off season winter

getting his life back in order,

having made a mess of it,

perhaps crashing a boat,

idk, he had sea experience

working his way up on

other's ships, and commanding

his own, but with crew,

perhaps starting in Merchant Marines

or before that working in the galley,

i recall and leaving his abusive

father, he hated being in the

cobbler shop working on shoes,

iirc, and when his father smashed

his model boat he had built,

that was it, at 15 or so years old,

off he went...

Like joining the Navy

but working on ships,

and getting away...

Odd just before 1900 language,

some nautical terms,

names for things not used to,

but an eBook

(viewing in browser)

can look up

(with highlight and define),

some the software may find,

places i don't know of,

besides what i've seen on

sailing YouTube channels

and now VendeeGlobe2020

having gotten the app working,

kinda, likely a VirtualRegatta2020

page ahead...

Racing is not cruising/ touring,

he takes a tow into harbor,

(Place an American did that

in a previous

VendeeGlobe2020

saving his ship and

disqualifying himself,

told the truth

finished the course,

and got a heros

welcome in France at finish)

doesn't have an engine,

see wrecks, storms,

wildlife, savages

trying to steal/ kill/

especially in the Straights

of Megellan (correct name?

seems more Spanish/

(Tierra de Fuego?)

South American)

politics, Spanish War

starting as he returns...

He liked the islands,

set course and sailed

straight, navigating by dead

reconning (sp?),

adjusted for current,

saved a ships log,

got mostly comped /

free room, board, supplies/repairs,etc

at ports once underway,

as into the service of others,

learned of letters of introduction,

carried mail between some islands,

given and bought supplies,

fixed his own boat,

running aground sometimes,

nearly losing it several,

but generally happy with the

work he did on it,

storms tattering his sails,

his boom and mast broke,

made an aft sail, more of a

modified yawl than the sloop

she started out as,

reefing the sail down to 3

many times, bare poles other

to ride out storms,

some upon back home

hit New York and destroyed a lot,

tried 7? times to get through

the Straights, blown back,

savages, shot at, tacks on the deck,

and eventually bartering,

then salvaging from

crashed ship(s) after

and

visiting grave sites,

of Columbus,

meeting presidential

ChurchHill (when ambassador?)

mentioned,

Lady Stevenson (author's wife?),

basically royalty

and those that took over

islands brought 40 native

women and found that his

brother Boss? had already

thought of the same thing,

Robinson Caruso (sp?)

and Darwin's the Beagle

more literary than many,

doing tours, attending parties,

hosted by most,

and too dangerous to stop other

places, a stove in his cabin/salon

given a better one later,

served him well,

trying to provision, a clock

he bought for a pound,

since the face was cracked

or something,

talked down from a pound and

a half...

Adventures,

cultures,

 Africa,

Cape Horn,

and other places i don't know

as well

he doesn't take the Vendee

course, which seems like

mostly the Southern Ocean,

turns out renamed, and

changes to maps in modern times,

the South Pacific, down to

AntiArtica (sp?)

waking to fly fish landing

on his deck, breakfast

to be sure,

terns (birds) greeting him

as he approaches land,

guiding him in many times,

dolphins, sharks some he kills,

goes non violent in the straights,

already a barren type environment

and enough death all around,

tries a goat on board,

previously a Boston spider,

finding a mate

(they don't get along)

a couple of rats,

and shunning a dog,

but the goat eats his map,

lines/ rope/cordage, etc

and off at the next port,

some crickets, don't fare

well either, and mutiny/

cannibalism (sp?) if he eats

his crew/companions,

health and quarantine,

encountered, as well as

health officials,

gets mighty sick on some

plums and get spoiled

traded/ bested by some

foods he stores,

finds tallow,

kills a shark,

argues with a kid

who claims his boat,

he off doing other things,

while trying to get it back,

barters a biscuit / cookie,

for some milk, eggs, etc,

finding markers and

fighting savages/ natives/

similar to American Indians/

in Central/South America,

mostly the

Straights, but Muslim

in Gibralter (sp?),

encounters many other cultures,

Australian aboriginal (sp?),

African, (pirates)

novice sailors, refusing help,

left to their own devices

/Spoiler lose their ship,

but their lives spared,

many aren't so lucky

and prognosticators say

things like it can't be done,

single handing / solo sailing

not much on the radar (Even

the concept not really there yet)

so to speak...

Fighting Flat Earthers (sp?)

even then, someone who had

sailed most of the world,

but academic arguments,

British argue with sailors

humors, lighthouse operators,

signalling ( bored/ lonely? )

and wishing him well,

news reports of coming into port,

brought on speaking engagements,

and donations,

interest from the young ladies,

too, some gaggle, asking their

auntie can they go for a sail,

only if auntie goes along,

repaying their hospitality

by tour boat like operations,

thinking they would get sea

sick, but not the case,

someone sent to check on them,

camping on the deck,

a shade/ cover made of

something, and swimming

natives, burly in/unhospitable (sp?)

ports/ low ranking officers

(happened to have been black),

no maps there, not quarantine,

so kept going, others 'tender',

writing glowing reviews of

islands, and countries

nice to the travelers and

hospitable, some earning

his way out with the lecture

circuit, as it were...

And I'm repeating myself,

he had likely said his story many

times reviewing the log

and writing from that,

saying both the good and bad,

dangerous and fun,

and many times inventing

ways, or repeating

(like the carpet tacks)

ways of survival...

Modified Text

What's Missing?

researching the copies of Spray

that have cropped up over the century

What Can Be Found?

more adventures,

by the same author

and others

many historical ones noted

in the text

What Can Not Be Found?

wherewithall (sp?)

to do it myself?

How To Analyze?

Lenses

Noob

Boats?

no motor?

Steamers coming on line,

replacing whalers,

and sailing in its decline,

and old school chap,

as it were, making it

46k mile (naut?)

around the globe in

3-4? years?

having stayed months

off course/ waiting for

a good time to do the

Cape Horn, etc,

retrying the Straights,

time and time again,

making little headway

some times,

repairs, getting sick

and skinny, attacked by

predators: pirates/ savages/

natives, sharks, waves,

storms: gales, etc

the things of adventure,

and escapism,

many times like

Jimmy Buffett,

MargarittaVille

with some rum, women,

song, and talking to self,

lest he lose his voice

he learns early on,

befriending wildlife,

becoming one with nature,

even a sea in her moods,

as he says/ mentioned,

and comes out the other

end 10 years younger,

he thinks...

Kids

Some good interactions

with kids of various ages,

on the islands and off...

Racers

Stop?

Why do that?

Didn't they have foils?

Why not?

Flying

Certainly faster?

But where/how to land?

On water?

Pontoon boats

SeaPlanes not really exist,

sailing was as close as they

got, afaict...

Natives/Savages

Perhaps like gang members

today just trying to survive,

right?

Dis/Dys

he seems to have some disability

perhaps losing part of a hand

on previous adventures/ service...

General Public

Why would anyone do that?

Assumptions

Would have thought from

some WikiPedia this would

be the marrying book,

but guess that was before

or after?

Panama Canal (started during the

book time) must shorten things

a lot, but missing continents that way,

but at least the Cape(s)...

Time Limits

eBook return,

despite other things to do,

SardineLandExtortionAndTorture2020

Seasonal

Cape Horn, etc passage

in good weather,

summer there, winter Northern

HemiSphere

(see Sphere, not flat,

despite Mercadian (sp?)?

(flattened) maps)....

Reading time:

only a few days,

slow to start

then deadline to return

(electronically disappears?)

library staff mentioned

cache and buffering

keep the browser open/ device

laptop on, and

might get a few more days?)

total, but about all i did

during that time...

How time is kept across

time zones/ latitudes/

longitudes

for each 40Minutes longitude?

= 1 hour difference?

Celestial Navigation

North Star

Southern Cross

Noon Time

might be good to learn...

Chronometer...

Error analysis

off by miles,

miss a needed island...

Dead Reconning

Book Data

see data elsewhere?

add link from

VendeeGlobe2020

and pull LOC.gov

 MARC data from that?

ProjectGuttenBerg (sp?)

has it, for free

this checkout

a library Duke Classics

copy...

many more links may relate

some relevance may be

determined by others...

My clever page names may not

help and may not even stay on

topic, so to speak/type/write...

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

Good to read, other things

going on and an escape from

some other things...

Had thought he had ghostwriting

help on the story/ writing,

but maybe not, time to develop

over the years, and told verbally

on speakers circuit like,

comparing with others,

developing and wording,

he didn't write it at see,

afaict, reading others then...

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

What adventures have you had?

Going to a new store?

Taking the Road Less Traveled?

Been to Sea?

On Water?

Lake?

Pond?

Pool?

Can Swim?

Turns out he can't...

like fishermen, seem to know

whats down there,

and like bicyclists, walking

is a failure, at times,

cross training others,

getting weak at sea,

walking up the mountain

to be entertained/entertaining,

not at peace with the navy

man and carriage sent

to pick him up, befriends him,

perhaps instead of throwing off

the mountain like the livestock

seem too...

What aloneness can you tolerate?

What helps?

Hinders?

Solitary or Mutiny?

Which is best?

For Whom?
