Section8VoucherIssues2010
Introduction/Definition/etc
Whining about something that might be
good, and asked for years ago,
finally happening (or like a pregnancy,
you don't talk about it until it actually
does...)

So I finally came up on a waiting list,
I should probably be quiet about this,
as most subsidized programs you
eventually learn to keep your head low,
they pound you like Whack A Mole if you don't,
but maybe that is part of the issue..
Manila envelope with lots of pages comes in the mail,
SURPRISE!
Introductory page is not welcome
to the program, congratulations on
out living the waiting list, been years
since you applied, but penalties for fraud,
jail, fines, and other punishments,
so Welcome! Congratulations!
<heavy sarcasm, a character defect I'm sure>
(Not that disabled and those from an alcoholic
home, etc aren't used to this treatment,
and maybe that way it does feel like home?)
Pile of Paperwork (near as I can tell,
remember dyslexic, and non lawyer here)
says something like
1) bring all the documents to the appointment,
including birth certificate
(how many people have those laying around,
and I'm sure post 9/11 it takes longer to get one..),
1a) pay stubs (what's that?)
1b) tax forms (again, disabled people),
etc...
3) call at least a day ahead to confirm appointment,
OR APPOINTMENT CANCELED,
4) don't do something, LOSE IT,
5) can't have two things at once,
so FORCED TO CHOOSE,
6) but they gave the forms that
would need to be filled out,
many many questions,
depending upon the meaning/
definitions of stuff, how can someone
answer them all correctly?
like the questions from monty python's
holy grail, Yes, I mean No, AHH!
thrown in the river Styx?
7) and maybe you can keep what you got,
in my case not working,
or would you like what is behind curtain number 2???
could be a donkey, and something worse...
8) you can designate someone to help you,
and for them to contact if they can't reach you,
you are being evicted, etc...
Guess what? If we had that someone,
we probably wouldn't need the Section 8
in the first place, we'd live with them...
and Rumors of the program are like this:
1) only have a month to fill the voucher,
so you are running around like something
from The Great Race, or similar,
never actually watched it, but maybe
like a poker run on motorcycles
or an alleycat race with bike messengers
(see BFF10 and GentrificationKills )
in August heat, as a disabled person,
catching scraps of what is left from
other people who get to plan ahead,
do it as they wish, on their time frame,
all because you are poor/ subsidized,
2) need to unexpectedly pay for application fees,
we don't know if we will accept you,
and your credit rating (if you have one,
and rental history might be an issue,
you probably live in the "slums",
or Fairfax County's equivalent to
start with, so there might be issues
with people hanging out on the corner,
and other low rent type stuff...
And just pay us, to start,
and we will see... NOPE,
expensive speculation...
3) And then moving fees/ costs, energy,
as a hoarder (read undesirable to start,
have anxiety on someone coming into the
apartment, was just going through inspections
for current program, eventually passed,
making wide isles through stuff,
like boxes of papers from RRWG meetings,
collected resources for putting up here,
research, writings in StreetSense,
most not online or difficult to find,
they redid the website and my best
stuff not easily, if found at all...
So whine, whine, whine,
finally get something you want/
asked for, and now can't do it,
or will be very difficult, so boo hoo.
There are homeless people all around
who would probably kill to have it,
so maybe that happens...
Another reason to keep your mouth shut,
besides the scorn of we taxpayers
are paying your rent!!??
(That's my wonderful critical voice
inside that beats myself up
usually called depression
which saps energy, but creates
a wonderful companion
when you have nothing else,
and makes you a joy to be around,
and only medical cure is
try getting an appointment,
or wait listed on that too,
sit waiting, pay docs (with what $$?),
to make you physically sick (It's just side effects,
live with them, or you fail that drug),
gain weight (read heart and diabetes problems),
and, at least for me, basically doesn't help
and hasn't for over 10+ years..)
Wouldn't you want someone like that
living in your space, and / or your neighbor?
Remember GottaGoNowWhat ???
So if you have or know of places.
or have better understanding of this
HUD Public Housing Authority type program
contact me off this, as once a vacancy is public,
someone else might take it,
and I'll try to summarize the experience,
most likely after the fact, though whining about it up
here is probably highly likely too...
Conclusion
Summary of experience or similar
