Introduction/Definition/etc

So given a ham, ate it, threw away the bones?

And Bought a Ham, tried making Split Pea Soup...

Body

Original Text

Given some Split Peas at

PandemicWareHouse2020

TNG (The Next Generation/ Year)

and try making split pea soup...

It's been years, if really ever that

i've made it, likely can't say i haven't

but this On My Own...

Pressure Cooker not working,

too lazy/ uninspired to open the

small one, so tried a

cast iron French Oven

with the InductionStove

AldiCroftonInductionStoveTop2021

(might collect info there?

sometime? TBD

Ambiano Not Crofton)

The stovetop (use link, helps

to have it populated by then)

requires Iron, and it's cast iron

with an enamel coating, but around

the lid, which has rusted, or another

Cast Iron Dutch Oven, likely

which is just collecting oil around

the skillet on the gas stove, splatter,

basically...  Couldn't seem to get that

clean to use, and had the other,

so using that.  At 4.6 Quarts or so

the bone fits, and is Iron,

Cast Iron, so works with the

InDuctionStoveTop

go figure...

Bone still had a lot of stuff on it,

mostly fat and cartilage (sp?)

connective tissue, and started out

searing it, but the beans/ peas really

required the beans like soaking method

sped up by a quick soak, which is heat

for 10 minutes or so, like to a boil

and let sit for an hour...

Turns out there is a timer on the

InDuctionStoveTop so used that,

10 minutes is the default and kinda

braised/ seared the bone with fat,

to start, add beans / split peas

(lentils might do, but then not SplitPea

but lentil soup...)  A Pound Bag of

Peas, said sort, so put out on a plate

and tried finding stones, etc,

some peas were miscolored,

i.e. not green like the others, but

seemed ok, all went into the pot,

and some water (i use a jug of

spring water, taken out of the fridge

for say overnight because using it

like a pitcher and drinking from it,

(more likely a cup, which i put on top

and have near the bed, for some

reason thinking like a hotel, plastic

cups on top of the ice bucket,

which you have to go out and fill

from the hallways, typically)

So used up that water,

day old, have to boil it,

sits out too long and gets

foul/ bad/ spoiled, quicker

if drinking from it.. The other

typical use is oatmeal

in the morning, or hot dog water,

but use up what i have and

start on the next gallon jug

which was in the fridge,

cold water, as a northerner,

tap is usually cold, and preferred,

but in colder weather might want

something warm, and hence soup,

using up a holiday ham.

I still have a ham bone in the freezer

from my mother who sent me home

with the remainder of a holiday

ham from back in the day, how many

years now? So freezer burn likely

and a dog would probably like the

bone, but difficult to chew, not a

rawhide bone, and oddly shaped

it turns out, this one had smaller

bone going to it, a hip joint,

it seems, so not sure what smaller

bone connects, and certain bones

are good for dogs relatively,

they like to chew, it is not a toy,

but more like big milk bone/

teething, and gum, jaw workout

like a gumball (actually gum,

just big)/ jawbreaker (just hard sugar,

also big)...

So seared for a while,

added split peas,

checked for stones, etc,

added water, needed more,

and boiled for a while,

and then turned off/ timer

ran out and have things to do

anyways so go out...

Oh and read the beans/peas

package, happened to by Goya

mentioned onion, so used up a

couple shallots, (seemed slimy

worried about ruining the soup,

by putting bad stuff in it,

stone soup, starts from next

to nothing and gets contributions

from everyone else, basically help

i'm hungry let's make soup, bring

something, hopefully it turns out well/good)

mentioned carrots,

but i didn't, had canned carrots,

and the GettingProduceBoxAlmostKilledMe2020

CapitalAreaFoodBankAtArlMill2020

CAFBAtArlMill2021

typically carrots turn black

and are wasted, which i don't want to do,

but don't have the teeth really to eat

big raw carrots,

MindingAndMiningYourTeeth2012

MobileMashDentistry2017

and all the extractions

without partials/ dentures,

and missing some,

felt stolen, as a ballooning

payment to get them done,

maybe this year, but abused/

mistreated, it felt, so how to

do that, without the abuse?

Anyways, no carrots added,

slimy onion/shallot,

a tan part and cut open

pulled out that, starting to sprout,

moldy like section on the tan

part, removed that, two small

onions/ shallots,

and weighing things, but

doesn't really matter, water

to peas/beans matters, don't

let it get too dry, and too watery

and it can cook off...

Went to buy another ham,

sale price, found for half price,

getting rid of holiday hams,

three varieties, $1.26/ lb

just plain,

honey ham spiral cut $1.46?-

$1.68?

(honey is in a glaze packet)

and Brown Sugar $1.86 or so

A couple more hours of hour on,

check, stir, colour had started,

and maybe took a couple

photos, difficult and the French Oven

lid is hot, so have to use a pot holder

to lift, other non Metal ones, have silicone

but can't really use with the dishwasher,

and a non Cast Iron Dutch oven

basically just holds, turns out brown

sugar and confectioners and stays on

the stove, it was on top of another

Dutch oven, the plain one,

so double-decker like bus

and a crowded kitchen,

collecting cans, etc, get through

the season(s), have enough

is quarantined, for a couple/ few weeks,

and some things i'd like to eat too,

buying things on sale, but not

just because on sale,

the HT (Harris Teeter)

$0.37/can beans/ vegetables,

i've skipped so many collected,

other ways, have canned corn

for the cornbread/ CookSomeThing2019

and trying to use things up to use

the regular gas stovetop

but the induction helps as

no direct flame, and easier

to clean, uses less Natural gas,

some fracking issues with someone(s)

drilling through my grandparents

home, uninvited, likely Fracking

taking over a town, no one there

to defend, corporate interests

and moved on, poisoning, possibly

what happened with my aunt

who died of cancer(s)...

Poison the well, so to speak,

the ground water, same as

goes into the ChesaPeake

(sp?), reports of house wells

coming up milky white,

and chemicals, deadly chemicals,

not just salt, etc...

on one farm when went to

Autreat2012

or so...

Anyways, left sitting,

heated more after return,

not leaving it cooking while out,

attended, but much less than gas,

an hour of playing game,

or watching TV and a few times

of that, and it's soup...

Besides the bone there was

a big part/ loop of fat/ skin

(Hams are fully cooked,

but the percentage of fat to

meat, much less bone to meat,

makes me wonder, basically

buying a lot of CrisCo/ fat/

butter like, but spoils,

so set aside/ reserved the

fat and used that with eggs,

potatoes, onions, for breakfast(s),

but haven't had the energy for that...

The ham is salty, cured in salt,

and a smokey flavor, not bad

if diluted  but the plain beans/

split peas, like a pasta or rice

plaining/ splitting/ extending

not all chili but chili with beans,

not all chili but chili Mac (macaroni)

though less wheat (gluten free)

High fat, but seemed buttery

and smooth.  We had a masher/

grinder type thing the beans/peas

went through like for making

applesauce, but this for the split peas,

i didn't need to do that, had cooked

it so long that is was just velvety

and how i remembered albeit plain,

as didn't have the garlic, bay leaf?

or other spices, bouillon (sp?)

broth like cubes, likely salty and MSG laden

(all Goya products, don't have so skipped)

mentioned on the split pea bag recipe...

YMMV good luck...

Saw a lady in the line, mentioned

on sale, and been wondering about

buying yet another ham,

if at half price, but carrying home

the 10+ pound plus other purchases

(other clearance elsewhere

more on that later, maybe)...

We had topped Split Pea soup

with a pat of butter (don't have

but would be good for a cookies mix)

Parsley (don't have but green

on top of green, and spicy,

edible garnish oddly a green

i don't mind)...

Canned Split Pea soup including

basic CampBell's i've eaten,

some may take milk to add to

instead of water, iirc,

and Progresso, and other companies

may make it, but not like home made,

if have the ingredients, the equipment

and the time, skill may be needed,

but i stumbled along,

no phone mom for help,

as she's passed...

(game show like Phone for answers,

my dumb cooking questions,

largely unanswered,

though mom was a good sport

about it, basically got down to

science of cooking

biochemistry, etc...)

Modified Text

What's Missing?

many of the standard soup recipe items

What Can Be Found?

hunger?

after walking 6 mils motivated

to finish and eat, getting ingredients,

cheap price was the incentive?

bragging rights on shopped,

like i'd hunted and killed the

beast my self?

What Can Not Be Found?

Vegan version?

Without the Ham fat and bone

try some time for comparison...

Try lentils similar process too.

what adds the fat, naturally

that makes it creamy?

What vegan fat substitute?

Olive oil?

How To Analyze?

Lenses

Noob

If you haven't had split pea

soup, maybe try a canned

version, then guess a home

cooked, well, version would/

might be better...

Besides just the DIY Pride...

Kid

With heat and cooking

maybe CrockPot/ slow cooker,

whatever means you have

of heating, within reason,

don't burn a place down, etc...

Sharp knives, some frozen

onion packages, and other

substitutes may make it both

easier and cheaper?

But donated in my case,

use up vegetables (Shallots/ onions)

carrots, some soups may use potatoes,

green beans, other (navy?) beans,

etc...

Dis/Dys

Lexic

Didn't read much of the recipe

nor instructions, dumb luck?

or remembering some recipes

from family / home and

cooking to taste/ consistency?

it tasted well enough,

some risks with knives

cutting onions/ shallots

while tired, and didn't muck

with trying to get more off

the bones, by picking

at a carcuss (sp?) like

a chicken or turkey...

Peeling carrots especially

small ones like small potatoes,

need to match the hand size

and some skills in doing so,

sharp items away from self

like whittling, and knife skills,

don't get too tired, hungry,

angry, bored, etc...

Vegan/Vegetarian

Likely modifications

from a bone based start,

Olive oil for fat(s), etc...

General Public

Canned is likely fine,

it may be how you garnish

it, basic CampBell's

and something warm for cold

days, hungry boiling stuff

til soup, happens,

Stone Soup and otherwise...

Assumptions

Cooking is a good skill to have,

handling meat takes practice,

some food safety,

knife skills, minimal at that,

as picked at the meats

pulling off some after carving,

so risks minimized...

Time Limits

Spoilage, a week?

Best before on the Ham,

after opening, and use up,

a few days of just ham this

and that OK for one 9lb

ham, novelty, but after a while

may tire of being constantly thirsty

from all the salted / cured ham...

Book Data

Likely an old family recipe

somewhere, collected in

various ways, but finding now,

where/ how?

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

Tried and some success,

wasn't dry lumpy, some burn

on the bottom, as needed water

and stir, but not very burnt tasting,

just consistency issue/

so watch next time...

and another ham in the fridge,

some/ one in the freezer would take

going out in snow, not a bad idea,

not that bad, will see what tonight's

today's storm is like...

Lady in line thinking of her dog,

a dog/ man with a bone

and the ones who care about them,

throwing a bone to the neanderthals

watching TV, i guess, man/ boy and

dog/ woman and trying to keep

them content, perhaps...

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

What cooking/ self care skills do you have?

Enough?

Do you learn more?

Or is that all she/he wrote?

A few basic things, otherwise go

buy/ eat out?

But when eating out isn't an option?

Say stuck in a storm and limited

ingredients?

Have Oyster /soup crackers

and tired of spreading peanut butter

on the little things?

butter run out and can't seem to

top it with CheeseWhiz?

Can deflated and what next?

Learn something and try not to make

yourself sick?

Got the remains of a holiday meal,

and not sure what to do?

Ham for sandwiches in bulk size?

ran out of bread, like in a storm,

don't want to go out to get,

bread maker gathering dust?

Is it soup yet?

Running the stove/ oven

sometimes warms people up too,

hanging around the cooking area

is kinda warmer, and nice coming

back from the cold, snowy, etc

don't slip on wet floors, etc...

Valentines is not having to cook?

Remember the chemistry of cooking

together? Miss that?

Well, learn how, show off?

Try to find Love again?

Why Bother?

Devout bachelor, can make

my own, right?

Well, here's a test,

give it a try?
