Once a year, and for the 73rd year, motorcyclists converge on Sturgis, SD http://www.sturgis-sd.gov/
for a Rally http://www.sturgis.com/...

Having been to SpringBreak2013 earlier in the year,
things going on around here that would be good to get away from,
and needing a vacation while the congress gets one, etc,
so I thought I'd try Sturgis, the other big yearly bike event...
Friday
Prep
So, not sure exactly when it starts, but looking it up online around August,
early August. Well more research shows some arrive July 31
and get a good campground, reservations made a year ahead, they want cash up front, etc...
Oil change, done myself with help, so might be OK on that,
well, it runs, get going?
Why wait for expensive repairs, and checks on stuff, that it probably doesn't need?
Plenty of places to work on bikes along the way, or there, right?
Plan
So try a basic skeletal budget/ plan for the trip,
Internet says about 1850 miles each way
Gas: $200 (10 tanks, assume $20/ gallon)
Lodging $20/day camping
or $200 for a saloon/ concert TheBlackCrowes Monday! campground, available online,
but no money yet for that, have to wait an see...
Food: $20/day, cheap plan is eat at grocery stores to keep the prices down
T shirts: $40, gotta prove I went, nobody will believe this...
Tolls: not really calculated, but assumed some for Florida, so might be some to SD?
Repairs: might need some stuff for the bike, tires, chain, extra accessories, etc
Gas back: $200
And off I went, or so I thought.
Company
I'd asked for company, a friend/ hopefully GF, but since she didn't want to go,
female companionship. I'd be like kind of like a big teddy bear to hug for 30 hours
or so, or what I thought at the time...
Guys need not apply. There are handles on the back, but never had a passenger...
Stuff
And Then there is The Stuff.... Camping Gear, clothes, etc...
It seems my only relationship is to my Stuff...
Might need to work on that, at least to have room for a passenger,
but she could have helped, in the decision making, packing, planning, etc,
Money solves most travel problems, you could buy what you need along the way,
most of the time.... On bicycles, credit card touring is done and hotels/ bed & breakfasts,
instead of camping, but in the wilderness, lodging can be few and far between...
So no one I'm interested in shows up at the start,
some guy talking about stuff, making me late, wait...
motorcycle talk, though not bad, wasn't what I had in mind.
at least to start...
Get a message, don't go, you lied, lose your place, being evicted, etc...
WTF? I can take a vacation/ planned at that, whatever...
What's the lie, I asked and it was declined? Someone else playing the jealousy card?
I'm overpacked/underplanned, as usual, and hanging around, waiting on an indeterminate start,
and anxious to get going around 10 am Friday.
Rush hour has ended, if I'm going, I better get going, or I'll just go back to bed,
and kick myself for a year, for missing it...
And tired of being stood up too...
Skip going back to pay rent in person, as have to get going, I can mail it in...

Cameras, charger(s), all sorts of things, a pocket knife, mini Leatherman (tm) multitool off the chain,
for accessing a court building a while back. Found a construction type pocket knife
along the road, but not carrying it ala DearBedBugs2013 ...

Get some breakfast too, granola bars, Fig Newtons (tm), OJ, whatever

There seems to be some things going on out in Wheeling, WV or somewhere out there in WV,
not the parts I'd been too much but whatever, details, just a town, passing through many anyway,
just head west, you will find it, read maps plan along the way...
Pennsylvania
Passing thru states, PA, first, call your family, check in,
Motto used to be "You Have a Friend in PA", but well, Philly isn't that Friendly, IMO,
Brotherly Love aside, so maybe that changed?
Thinking back, A Friend, read the fine print, in the state, motto gauranttees?

I've not spent a lot of time there, in my past,, but saw, while turning off to try to find Canton,
home of the Football Hall of Fame, a Canal, so went looking for cheap/ free hiker biker campsites
like the C&O Canal National Park system...
To no avail, but explains the change in route...
Use Card
Stop in at a friendly frozen dairy place, that seems to understand me, finally,
turns out to have a campground/ amusement park across the way...
Really ought to go back there sometime, but trying to go to SD,
or will kick myself for likely the rest of me life...
(and the inverse, BTW...)
Get a call message from / thru virtual strangers...
Your headlight is out, was to keep you from riding during the night when we can't see you...
(Meanwhile, I use high beam, when I remember switch and backup accessory light(s))
Get a hotel, a clean one, give us a call and we will join you...
Will tie you to the bed, take advantage of you/ have our way with you, and steal the bike...

But later realize, there's no way to return the call...
And not positive who was calling, given it was kind of an open call for company/ companionship
through other parties...

Hollywood type otherwise non descript guy in the elevator, athletic, going to work out,
could be a cop,
Basically says they were seedy, we didn't let them in, they went elsewhere...
OK, I'll possibly give them seedy, given where I may have met them, but a little judgemental,
IMO....
I never did try the pool myself there, or anywhere, even two other places along the route,
there and back...

Heart broken and more than a little bit horny, (ref Harry Chapin song(s) like in Circle2013 )
heading West again, lost out/ turned around of Columbus or OH similar town name...
Self Therapy
Was biking to something each day at home following DearBedBugs2013 as self therapy,
and now not biking, er, pedaling so maybe go explore?
Getting a little exercise just carrying my own bags...
Leg over the bike, and back, etc...
Finding stuff in strange towns takes time, energy and patience... Oh, and internet....
So battery life too, and signal.... Only 1 Bar? SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWWW...

Amish Country
Like in Pennsylvania, East Of York PA (a Harley Davidson plant)
Ohio and other states have enclaves of Amish / Mennonite,
farmers who sell their goods the old fashion way, along the side of the roads,
and en mass other ways, leave the transit to the heathens,
just joking, but those who have gas powered stuff can travel to us,
instead of us doing that sinnery...
Interesting human powered vehicles, bicycles, scooter type things
and buggies at night, complete with slippery, stinky and potentially
dangerous to motorcycles and bikes deposits of bio mass along the
road/ roadsides...
Ohio Truck Stop
I've gotten off the beaten path/ interstate, and gotten to something odd,
a Truck Stop...
On two wheels, I'm not generally welcome there, people think a motorcycle is odd,
small, slow, road kill, but the travel store has all sorts of hardware, flags, lights, parts, etc,
and gloves, knife to open the FM canalope (sp?), open package, cut cheese, bagels, etc...
Life In The Country
People hanging around the bike, looking curious, wanting something,
I'm generally entertaining, when I can be,
Seems like he's milling around and son out there eying the bike,
I talk with them for a while, said I'd put up a picture and maybe a grandmother or someone/something would help,
I'm probably not going this justice, I was just passing thru, not sure why you will encounter...
Best I can figure there are poor all over, I've been and continue to be, despite my adventures,
self prescribed alternative to a hospital visit, and probably at about the same cost,
get out get to see other things, and (in a alternating George Carlin voice (find link) )

Talked to a few people about it, Sturgis, it's flat, dry. miles of miles of corn fields, and a long trip...
What's at Sturgis? Bikers? Kind of like Las Vegas, what happens there stays there,
right?
It's about sex? Gambling? Girls (generic term)? /Women? Drinking? Nope, don't do that...
And my odds on other fronts are minimal...
Having driven through Kansas all day long decades ago, thinking of hospice and terminal illnesses,
I know The West is BIG,
Big States compared to the puny little ones along the North East...
Delaware, go through in a few hours, Rhode Island, no problem...

The Rockies trap the moisture along the high elevations so it's dry for a lot of
the Eastern parts along the way...
Tumbleweed? Seem to recall some, what does one do about that on a bike?
In a car it scratches, you try dodging it, avoid hitting others, whatever...

OK, losing track of sequence here, it's too long to really remember, it becomes a blur,
I could either write about it, along the way, or go... So I went. To hell with journalling my life,
nobody reads this anyway, and I'm off duty, so to speak, off the rails some say,
I'm having fun, or whatever this is called...

Various unnamed people coming to talk to me along the way, seems I'm well known, but not sure how...

Maybe a protective order? I've been sick/ suicidal/ "strong feelings"/ whatever,
so maybe they are keeping an eye on me?

OK, there are a lot of bikers out here on the roads, some couple with a Harley and I pull up next to them,
while they are talking with others, I go inside to take a leak, find food/ snacks or something
Turns out he's got a vest on, both Harley logoed people, maybe they are sales?
Too well dressed to be anything else...
OK, second guy pulls up, they can't drive/ ride with me, better get going.
Other guy has a badge and gun somewhat hidden,
Come to think of it, there's a bullet proof vest under his other high visability vest...

Next exit or so says Sturgis, I've not looked at a map, maybe this is the way to go?
Sturgis IL or Michigan or something, not the SD one, nor even a parallel way / alt route...
But got some variety for a while, if not potentially dreadfully/ deadly lost...

Toll roads prices $4.25 or so, other/ most places less than $4 / gallon...

I'm leap frogging with people I've seen along the way, might as well say Hi,
see who is stopped when. Don't need anything but stretch my legs,
maybe check the clock... Pacing myself...

Losing track of the days here, second day, end of day, getting towards Chicago and went further than I could looking for a place to stay, can't find one, even offered to pay in a park, but not wanted/ welcome/ discriminated against/ ridiculed?, so end up in a rest stop in another state, sleep on a park bench,
watching the bike, stuff out with me, more vending machine meal/snacks,
but have the farmer's market food to eat,
need to shut my eyes for a bit, so I don't drive while sleeping,
state police come by, waking me each time, I'm alert, except for being asleep...

Frozen Dairy
Family run place again, but have more foods, and a seating area inside,
part of the high plains/ praire (really need to learn the terms)

Guy sticks a camera in my face, I say no, he continues,
maybe his buddies convince him later to not do it?
Autobahn
We could use an unlimited highway, and the open space out there,
while some said people live here, the density is so much less,
people could use unlimited speed and have more high speed businesses
along the way?

People vary in speed, passing rules/ policy/ etiquite? (sp?)

Seasonal differences?
Ground concrete, rough, caught the tires, made handling difficult,
maybe something about the winter time and on turns,
or water? Don't know, but rough too, so look out,
not working for everyone, maybe why Harley's and other cruisers
have such big tires by comparison?
Sturgis
Hit the town, Rapid City, and Sturgis is nearby...
Follow some bikers on a side road and they go to a campsite,
I pull in next to them at registration, and find out about staying the night...
Pushed for more than one night, don't have but the $15 cash on me,
tolls and stuff, they take a check, but no, just no, don't have many with me,
etc...
Security
Tough guy posing as security or security posing as tough guy, basically will steal my stuff,
just paid for the place, no receipt / wrist strap nor proof I paid, the tuxedo t shirt kid
found the owner, who gave me a tour, and then one from the group I followed had some words
with me, don't like being followed, not one of them, why am I there, etc...
No refunds, likely, so just keep going and try to sleep anyway...
Hill Climbing
Up that ridge is more camping, go to the right of the bolder, and your bike can probably make it,
the guy(s) at the beer garden seem to think I can, and wait a minute I'll just put on some protective gear,
don't need it, says those drinking, but I do, and make it up the hill, probably too far left, where there are few if nobody else, probably someone else's land, he has people coming later...
Tent
Setup tent, Find all the stuff I didn't pack, sleeping bag liners, etc...
Sweaty hot, dirty, don't want to go back down the ridge at night or ever really,
to the showers, and well just stink it all up, need to wash the sleeping bag then too,
not sure what to do about the pad, etc...
Storm
Some rain happening overnight, everything getting wet, the top put on,
and well ride it out, as not going anywheres...
Monday
Morning
Slow Start,, pushed a lot of miles to make it there on 3 days instead of 4,
while I'd thought maybe two, an Iron Butt, Iron Man 1000 miles in a day,
send something in first, prove it with receipts, and you're in?
Anyway, had some food, eat a little, decide not to wait around for the breakfast/
shower, etc...
Bike Serviced
First order of business, make sure the horse gets fed?
Might take a while, saw a dealer on the way in, and successfully found it again in the AM...
Had the headlight problem, pushing it in didn't fix it, maybe the bulb burned out while messed with while powered on?
and maybe look at the clutch/ way too hard to pull in and release, maybe led the wrong way,
been having problems with it, don't want to be stuck somewheres...
Some chain noise started,
tire situation, back knobby running low, knobbies don't wear like regular tires and when knobby worn down, you don't have slicks, you're done, new tire
doing the tire replacement, they have to do the chain, adjustment to get it on...
Like a combo deal...
Talk with a couple on a BMW...
He's friendly she's cute but standoffish.
They smoke so I go away, and also need to be out of the sun, burned badly and starting to be 10 am,
peak sun times again...
How the tread went down on the bike so easily,
to belts, on both of the Metzler tires?
$420 with a tire change, look at the tires, nothing right, off name, no tread match, feeling the victim,
less than friendly, get a second opinion, from another customer, skip the tire, and chain stuff...
$106 or so and get out quickly something happening downtown I'm supposed to be at?

So like most MidWest or other towns , the hub of social activity is the bar/ diner,
but I don't drink, so why go there? Find a place where that's not a problem,
and be annoyed by people I'm not like. Just used to being around...

People Near My Bike
Can't find a parking space nearby (unlike Daytona, park on the beach...)
Go outside and check the bike and people showing my bike, not me,
fold arms look annoyed, they turn around a leave...
I've had about enough of that...
Threats of losing my bike, to my person, property, family, security, emotional and otherwise
(not that stereotypical guys have more than two emotions, the other one is anger...) etc...

Started from the dry western air...
Could also have something to do with weeds, allergy, and the constant wind
from riding?
Rain
Started and forecast a bad one, riding out a road by the big saloons/concerts, and finding nothing
along 34 East or whatever of value, and just plain desert, turn around, and hear along the main road,
forecast, and people scattering, hang around a tent, park bench near a church, and
be told something was done to my bike, as he leaves, another mean person to deal with,
and no girls to speak of... Well some drunk like ones, cute, and split up, one to an in town campsite
back behind the church ($30/ night)
Leaving
Spent three days riding to get there, no Black Crowes concert that was Sunday ,not Monday, my bad, and just a carnie type town event, nothing really to do, guessing I'm running low on money already, lower on social /. interpersonal skills, so I'm leaving...
Wyoming
Take a break early afternoon, go West old man, get out of the way/ out of town?
Haircut
Someone had told me to get a haircut, buy shoes, etc...
So might as well get around to it, better Therapy anyway...
This place had massage too, but claimed to be staffed during the daytime...
Rain
No hotel/ motel along the way, heavy rains, missed the first set, but second wave and continuing,
going east, people in the lobby of places, and she had called and nothing for a few towns over,
the town of Wall might have some, I keep going.
Lightly dressed woman at a bar closing said I can have her, some voice amongst the guys asking if I have protection, and well I'll keep going...
Rest Stop
Two older woman doing a humping like position near the video monitor and ask if they can come in, not sure what to say to that, late night not very busy, I go in and use the hand dryers, all 4 or so, to try warming up/ drying off, to continue, even though next town might have a hotel/ motel, I'm about frozen/ sick, so try doing the best I can while there....

People in disguises threatening to kill and well, there must be a law enforcement officer around somewhere, turns out there was, I get out of there, and someone probably gets arrested, Law wants me in another state, when it happens, fine, when I understand all that was said, mostly verbally, and I'm gone....

Wondering lost in western MD? No call phone probably lost, no directions
40, 50, 70? Greenbrier State Park? Thought that was WV,
getting late, and come home to see if my stuff was sold, and notices on the door,
as threatened before I left, but nothing different that I can tell, even two hoodsies
smoking on the steps/ stoop... Both known to me, but I'm dragging and
just want bath and bed, might even skip bath, for bed, then have to do all the wet laundry
(some was even clean!)....

Finding Stuff
Things returned to me, or just finding them. Grey bicycle gloves mysteriously reappeared in my bag...
Bumps on my hand, near the gloves, someone said I was infected, near a welding burn,
or the blisters from sunburn on right hand/ wrist, bumps on head, from wet helmet(s),
and boils on butt / saddle sores returning?

Worse for Wear
"None the worse for wear" is the phrase, but use it as I can...
bragging rights, don't do much good, 6 days riding and lots of money for 1 maybe 1.5 days there...
Remember the body painted/ tattooed girls riding naked on the back of bikes,
memorable!/ Priceless...
Plan it a lot better, if I ever go again. Black Hills mountains has some nice places,
which I didn't see.
Ride out earlier, last week of previous month, decode on a place?
Pay ahead? Budget better?
More sightseeing along the way, instead of rush to get there...
Wyoming
I visited the first rest stop West, hung out there for a while, ate some packed foods,
back and forth for water, bathroom, etc...
Alaska
Considered if my stuff were sold while I was away going to Alaska, but some said it was 4k miles
each way, and only two seasons late in this to start, August is really starting November where I am
and wet and cold, my rain gear I didn't even pack, much less heated gear, and warmer
stuff, caps, etc...
Conclusion
Summary of experience or similar
Got away, got there, saw a little, did less, and well, returned, alive despite the obstacles,
man made, mother nature imposed and otherwise presented themselves,
most would say problems of my own making, but not really....
Poor planning is bad, possibly dangerous, but over planning and I'd not have started,
