I read a good part of this a while back, and didn't write it up while it was fresh on my mind,

so might be some revisions if/when I reread/ finish reading the whole thing...

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

Not sure about taking kids into your home, many probably can,

but he did, adopted some kid(s) which put them on his insurance

and with surgery, kept them alive...

The author is a little different than the subject, she admires him,

and is a good writer, but it's not the same as in his words,

with his mental organization/ mental model.

Many might not understand it that way,

but I might find it more interesting...

Ethiopia, with a Jewish doctors' mission is actually helping African/ black

Jewish people, a subset of the culture living in difficult situations,

most diseases that you would not see in the USA, and the First World,

like a Tuburculosis spine? or similar combination that causes developmental issues...

Finding street kids was described, kids panhandling to survive.

And then needing treatment, and dealing with families, cultural differences

and whole other continents, to get treatment when basic hospital functions are

sometimes non existent, much less money to care for people...

Dr. Rick is on a Jewish charitable society's payroll, and eventually even

plans some emergency medical evacuation, based on need,

to another country (Israel?), for treatment/ surgery...

Other doctors, kind of like Doctors Without Borders,

and nurses, some can deal with the constant and desperate need, others can't.

Some paths and philosophizing about that, let's call it the medical divide,

more to be learned there, too...

Dr. Rick met Mother Teresa, at her mission, sometime earlier in his career,

and worked there for a while, iirc...

How he got into medicine and his life story is described, including how he was as a kid,

somewhat...

A former Geology major decides to travel to places he learns about on the map/globe...

Medicine seems to be one way...

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

What ethics and levels of need have you seen?

Does operating on your own relatives make sense to you?

Some ethics say you can't treat your own relatives,

but if you are the only specialist in the country/world,

for certain diseases/ conditions, maybe lifesaving surgery provided by the doc,

who adopted you to save/ treat you, is the answer...

Boundary issues exist, but not dying might be good too...

Compare and contrast with Masters and Johnson's interactions in the name of science,

plus Dr. Masters with treating his wife having infertility issues, (really his infertility)

and his protege...

All age appropriate, of course, this is not a child's book, but it's also not without situations

children might need to know about, as they are wiser than we think,

just should not have to grow up too fast...

Better they grow up at all, but at what costs, emotionally?

Physically, and internationally?

Do they all want to become doctors themselves?

What if they can't become Dr. Rick and/or a reasonable faxsimile?

What life path is left for them?

Professional patients?

Research subjects?

Authors?

Journalists?

Paralympics stars?

Activists?

And/or back to the streets?
