So an ADULT book of short stories
by Southern author Larry Brown.
I stumbled upon the author by looking
up Ole Miss, the University of Mississippi
from a departing bike mechanic's destination...

Some others Faulkner around there,
and something about a man eating bear,
while they attack, they don't generally eat,
and some other things, which i'm forgetting...

Reviews said the writing had Grit
which may be a pun on Grits,
idk...
Country and other Musicians influenced by him
like folksy people Bob Dylan?
and others, many of which i hadn't heard of...

So checked around and found the local library had
a copy, of this one, and short stories
can't be too bad to start? see if like them
and read longer ones if i do...

But the first story,
and a few more and i wasn't sure i'd want to finish
the book. Happens sometimes with me,
start soemthing and maybe not bother finishing,
while some perhaps completest things going on
and put it down a while and just finished it ToDay...

There's a lot in there,
the author was a FireFighter
and like court, medical drama,
and other things it's very real,
while at the same time a Drinker,
writes as Leon BarLow,
like he's a bar fly or something,
and a fair amount of it is bar life,
married like, becoming single again,
trying to get laid, NightLife
and married / separating,
construction guy, and stories twice
told from his point of view,
not the usual narrator, but another,
and her side too, and where they don't meet,
like it's therapy to see her side of it,
but not a lot of emo stuff,
The situation, and she's wanting to complain
talk, and he's wanting, or in thie case not wanting
sex from an older woman, divorced, abused by
her husband Harold, and a broken door,
contractor talked down $20 to
while tring to take care of a sick little girl,
who adores him, but her mother, a welfare
woman, watches TV and reads detective,
scary stories, and doesn't work while complaining
about him not making enough monet, while he's
on workers compensation, after a scaffolding
falling down and hurting his back...
She's dressing up and acting like it's a date,
instead of house/home repair,
and he's fighting at home,
asked questions about her,
taking odd jobs outside other work time
laying bricks...

And the endings are abrupt, not happy endings,
despite the pun of trying to get sex,
like at a massage parlor, while never mentioned,
a strip club with a shrimper,
came down to Florida, Pensacola
with other people's money to fish/shrimp
and to bring back stuff, and it gets tough,
Golden Nugget casino and various places
to spend the money, while losing his copilot
and the guy who knows the name of the boat
he's supposed to be shrimping/ chartering/
getting stuff from...

And a lot about becoming an author,
writing and even an Apprentice,
his wife, he describes several throughout
(sp?) the book, mostly between women,
and various states of inebriation,
a lot of driving around, i guess cooling off,
but drinking laws, buying beer, but it's warm,
and have to carry a cooler, of ice
to chill things, in the trunk, open can like laws,
but mostly drunk driving, i guess
what a lot of FireMan see and how it goes,
crash, killed, death, maimed,
arrested, and back to bars,
some jail, and other places,

Some War Stories, a lot about his late father,
his buddies, Monroe he goes riding with
and a lot of losses, escpeially in the later
part of the book...

Tiny Love is the name of one of the stories,
and it's a small man a factory worker
and his wheelchair bound wife,
who drinks and watches TV...
While a doctor tells her and him
that she's dying that way,
so he tries to cut her back/ off,
cold turkey and things happen,
shit happens...

Big Bad Love
another part/ segment of the book,
ironically about female anatomy,
his wife in the story,
and various things happen and don't
there too, the dog dies,
she had wanted him to shoot the dog,
but her cats and rabbits and it's
rather cruel, many parts...

But stated matter of factly,
not quite emo/ clinically,
but more story teller,
like did you hear the gossip about,
something common in small towns,
perhaps more in rural Southern towns,
and during various time periods,
Mars launch and caring for the
locals instead,

A Flasher, and track the guy down,
as flashed his wife at the Dumpsters,
and what he thinks of the guy,
and how that happens, and doesn't...

So many different stories, wondering
if he's processing all the stuff he sees
/ saw as a firefighter, and getting oldler
and can't do the physical part,
the ForeWard and other places have noted,
and from a Captain of the Oxford?
Mississippi fire department to a writer,
and that transition, among many others,
mostly relationships, aka getting
wasted in bars looking for women,
and even finding some, mostly without
happy endings...
