Introduction/Definition/etc

Ubuntu 19.10 Exceedingly Erroneous

upgrade from Doubtfully Debugged

on HPProBook645In2018

...

Body

Original Text

So popped up notice from something like

upgrade-manager and decided to upgrade

while most common sense would be backup,

and install fresh from media

(DVD &/or USBStick)

but not feeling like it and didn't have materials

handy like a USBStick so punted and had some problems...

First, not enough space,

the error seemed like about a Gig needed

so going into ISOs directory

rm ISOs/*.zip

which was NOOBs Lite, KNOPPIX etc

in Zipped form

.ISOs and other formats not touched

got rid of enough space

The window moved around would

show Details,

with a > like expand action

and playing with the accessiblity font size

didn't help, the window was larger than my screen

size and could not get tie process started,

the left colump panel? right click gave more information

but started up a FireFox window for like ReleaseNotes

or something, but had been warned to close all apps/

window during the upgrade, so not good there either...

Not letting me login

thought it was a screen saver,

had to power down

something one would think destroys things

somewhere along the Halting Problem

c-a-F4 or so

F1 not helping for some reason

trying to upgrade

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

or dist-upgrade

suggested a couple things

locked like running elsewhere in the system

to

top

z

for highlighting

and

dpkg --configure -a

which configured packages

already partially installed

i went for installing some things

to try to make sure i had a

windowing system

gkrellm

as in

sudo apt install gkrellm

and it was already there

and didn't find any missing dependencies

games

kde-games

didn't exist?

gnome-games

might have installed but nothign i really cared about

gnome-mahjongg

kshisen

xsol

xbill

etc already there

so no luck, and might be OK

AutoRemove

sudo apt autoremove

got rid of old packages

and got maybe 800 MB back?

I did take some phtoos of the screen

not screenshots which would be a hot key

i don't happen to know off hand,

but camera pointed at screen,

so might have to remind myself

along the hours long process

download had stopped

one time

and partial install was one option

continue anohter

continuted first time

partiial another

thinking it had already started and it

knew that,

some warning about 3rd party applications

and enabling somewhere in the software package installer

program

So while i'm not a noob, i don't do it all day long,

and don't have many machines to do it on,

like a lab, desktop, servers, tablets, etc

so home user, maybe power useri,

anyone still not using windows might

be considered that given the blue screen of death,

and Insert Credit Card to continue (image of floppy drive

eating all your money, paid software and nightmare

of Halloween Letters, where B. Gate$ declared hobbyist

as somehow bad, back in the day...)

Anyways, got it going

xemacs21

xemacs21-supportel

and it compiled the emacs lisp additionals,

while my console based non graphical enahancements

like journal script calling python for some header stuff

still works, so might be able to use the other one,

but FireFox works,

using it now

and games tried, some of those worked

like

pysolFC or similar

pysolfc

given case sensitivity on some things

and Fan Club some places and not others...

Alternatives might be Fedora,

they had OLPC and Sugar built on top of,

so some good, but also a Fed and

SELinux plus other problems,

back and forth,

compile your own

_nameForgottenMayBeRememberLater?_

Alpine

for really small stuff like using a RPi for sound

Audacity and stuff like that...

Anyways, working well enough

and likely not very friendly install,

thought of reporting it to local lists,

but mostly Fedora and not that nice

EmailListRoadKill2018

so why bother...

Hate, politics, a mail manager host

rather strict, so not much support

though decade(s) of that,

and gone down hill, in a lot of ways,

IMNSHO

YMMV

LOLCatZ$

etc

Modified Text

What's Missing?

What Can Be Found?

What Can Not Be Found?

How To Analyze?

Lenses

Noob

Have an old machine and something to learn

on, another drive, external enclosure,

USBStick/ SDCard, etc

and willing to learn, and have to reinstall

if something goes

wrong...

UberGeek

Probably know it's not that big a deal,

but some gotchas to avoid,

like too big install screen...

General Public

There's an OS under there

and it's Linux?

Really?

WTF?

Assumptions

Linux is for you

Friends don't let friends do M$ WinDoze

OpenSource means you have the hope of

supporting your self, by looking at the code

but assumes you have the code reading skills,

and/or patience, high speed access,

heard of git, svn, mercurial, etc...

Time Limits

Six months, seemed late,

as not in last month, might have slipped,

and busy

Was going to do other things in the meantime,

but not installing easily and took most of the day,

not much hands on, by comparison,

but worrying about having hosed the machine

(again) on upgrade

Oh, and booted an older kernel

from the grub menu,

and escaping out of the boot screen to see

how it was booting

like dmesg output...

Book Data

DaBricked is more like it,

stamped by the fool who put his feet in clay...

ISBN

 Bound

CopyRight

Some actually in here might be

CopyLeft

GPL

PerlArtisticLicense

etc

 Pages

index

Ubuntu1910EE2019

Ubuntu1904OnHP2019

(not a lot of naming conventions followed there,

but only a few data points...)

HPProBook645In2018

RPiTouchScreenDisplay2018

RPi3in2016

GeekingOutWithRaspberryPi2012

OneLaptopPerChildoplcorg

and likely a lot of others

but you have to do some leg/

mousing, searching,

aka FootWork, etc...

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

Its out, i'm running it now,

writing on it,

but some similar problems

installing window size not even close to debugged,

from

sudo update-manager

console options might have existed

sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

but not for the timid, if it will even call it up/

start it up

and then what output, partitioning a disk,

no reminders for backing up,

even it unbootable, aka bricked/ wedged/ hosed/ etc

might have saved the data on the partitions

but special confirations for say

Sugar running on Ubuntu

and server stuff, etc

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

What OSes are you comfortable with?

Do you have a choice?

At work?

At School?

At Home?

elsewhere?

What good does staying up to date help with?

Where does it hurt?

What bleeding edge war stories do you share?

Which don't you say?

Why?

Why Not?
