WritersRightsAndResponsibilities
Introduction/Definition/etc
What do writers want, what is the interface (computer term like a software contract?)
between writers, page editors, seasoned journalists, writing group members, publishers,
interns, paid people, etc. Reminded me of the patients rights and responsibilities,
and USA Founder, George Mason's Bill of Rights...
This is more a print media, but gives you some Idea what I'd want if
writing for someone else, and what I'd hope to offer those willing to contribute
their writings to this PBWorks site...

Writers Rights and Responsibilities
[with some recognition of Editors and their processes ;-} ]

Writers Rights
0. To have the appropriate resources necessary to create the works,
meaning access to sources, protection of sources, if necessary, and tools
meaning paper and pen for those retro writers,
and/ or computer and online tools to make it happen.
1. To have their work published unmolested by editors, interns and others
2. Fair and accurate attribution of their work
3. Fair compensation for their work,
Current Street Sense rates are
15 free papers for a poem, short story or photograph,
30 for a long story (#? words?)
4. To know when their piece may run, and to be informed of any changes
5. At most two cycles of edits before final version
6. The right to pull the article by deadline if not reflective of their work
7. To be treated with respect and fairly as any professional would be
8. To have advice on career path and likelihood of other employment options
Writers Responsibilities
1. To submit material to the best of their ability
2. To report quickly if the agreed upon deadline will be missed,
and request adjustments accordingly
3. To take part in discussions of story budget for the publications.
Editors Rights
1. To refuse to publish inappropriate, threatening or inflammatory material,
as determined by editors, or general community standards.
2. To have their feedback respected (though perhaps not liked),
as for some reason the editors have developed some expertise in editing,
to be in that position.
3. To be the final authorities on the story budget and make adjustments
as necessary to meet deadlines, despite sometime heroic and miraculous
circumstances.
4. Not to risk life, limb and career to make something happen.
Editors Responsibilities
1. To treat all submissions with respect,
and not undercut someone's original works
by giving to someone else without the creators knowledge and/or permission.
2. To meet deadlines in a sane way.
Conclusion
Summary of experience or similar:
Draft from my Street Sense time shared here, specifically
(Creative Commons, Share and Share Alike, With Attribution,
but NON Commercial, as if anyone should make money
out of the work it is me and the other contributors)
to give background on what I was talking about
on the Union Contract mentioned in an old entry...
There is also the original policy I wrote for this site, which probably requires
agreement to edit, some newly added writer would have to tell me if the
system is still requiring. And I can find the policy for others to peruse,
(AcceptableUsePolicy may be it?) like web terms of service,
and maybe developing a privacy policy that many other websites have...
