eBikeCheating2017

from

Introduction/Definition/etc

Visit one store, so far, with eBikes,

electronic motorized bikes, which split

the difference between a bicycle

and a motorcycle, really a scooter,

given speed and other limitations,

but mainly cost, and the new industry

that is rather proprietary and emerging,

if that is the word...

Body

Original Text

(template based on stories,

where changing information

changes the intro,

and might happen here too,

as learning and only one data point,

really, so far, will see)

Modified Text

(see just above)

(duplication problems with branching/

normalization, etc copying between

pages instead of linking to one copy...)

What's Missing?

More experience and knowledge about eBikes,

standardization of bike parts, non proprietary

shakedown of the technology, batteries,

that work across manufacturers,

instead of like laptop batteries,

each manufacturer locks you into theirs,

and these are hundreds, to thousand(s)

for a battery, and they would not really

even give me prices on that...

What Can Be Found?

eBikes in various retailers,

even some regular bike shops

seem to have them, and

Annie's Ace hardware ordered and

sold at least one, a Riide,

or similar, iirc,

as needed help configuring it,

on the more bikie side,

the electronics

probably OK out of the box...

What Can Not Be Found?

The right one, for me, at least

at a cheap enough price to make it fill

the void between bicycle with demands

of high mileage, 50-70-100+ miles /day/

some trips each way, and motorcycle,

given battery and pedalling demands,

so merging the options might be

necessary, and the all important DIY,

hack your own and make it Destructabe(s),

spoof on Instructables, open hardware,

for people who like tinkering, and/or need

to because what they need doesn't yet

exist...

How To Analyze?

Various perspectives, roles,

and people, much less industries,

and countries involved in the

design, manufacture, distribution,

and sales of these little beasts

maybe eBeasts, depending,

upon the future(s)...

Lenses

Even people have different

glasses, in roles, like hats,

etc, so one day looks good,

brand spanking new,

and later, in the rain,

buyer's remorse, etc,

maybe looks different...

User/Rider

All sorts of different types

here, from young, wanting

one, parents not affording them,

much less for a big family of kids,

to mostly affluent people in the

grid systems, but like lawn mower

engines, and hacking in a garage

it's probably in the country too,

dag nabbit...

Also, given what it's probably around

(read smallest on the road, and cars,

trucks, busses, basically predators, etc),

some projectiles too, and eventually

corpses, as the civil engineering type

transit sewer system probably

makes them that way sometimes,

not sure the stats on it yet,

but could probably be found...

First time riding risks, like with others,

motorcycles and scooters

some dangerous for the amount

of new found power, and/or how it

works, with no instruction, people don't

necessarily learn to control, reign in,

and the turns, and wet leaves, washouts,

and other obstacles along the way,

(some man/woman/kid/gang? made?)

like with a learners permit,

and moto endorsement,

not a lot of training built in,

even for those regulated,

trained and tested,

for such activity...

Handicapped / Disabled

Doctor's note/ prescriptions are mentioned,

even on the store's/ shop's (check 's or s')

website, and may be moving in that direction,

ADA on trails to allow motors,

some purists think it's cheating, but

ADA applies to trails too,

all those curb cut outs and elevators

big enough for wheel chairs might fit a

bicycle, stood up, and bike racks on

buses, ADA on Rail, and mass transit,

for multimodal, even Amtrak,

but wheelchair, and inline wheelchairs,

a reasonable accommodation

for taking a bike in, used as a mobility

aid, even getting it to the station(s),

lines, stops, etc, much less when there

(no don't ride near tracks, stupid, really,

fall over on the high power third rail,

into the path of something that

can take up to mile(s) to stop,

and Kendra's Law and other hazards

of open tracks and railroad crossings

that may have historically been part of

why railroads were going down,

and personal vehicles went up,

besides the rubber conspiracy,

/ industry, but digressing...

Kind of like Military Industrial Complex,

as I may barely understand the history,

but trains, trolleys and trams, etc

were major capitalist investments/

robber barrons (sp?) of steel,

and stuff, but people, being people,

like PCs v. mainframes, and laptop

then handheld v. desktop

wanted to be unleashed,

so wireless, and going where

and when you want, say studying

under a tree, at the beach,

in a library, on the go,

in the back seat, etc,

and we wanted our freedom,

from oppression, control,

domination, exploitation, etc,

so we got it, eventually,

(many lives lost along the way,

Johnstown, PA flood, etc)

or at least until you consider

location based corporate and

individual stalking,

tracking and other problems

there...

Monkey aka Bitch

Passenger(s), usually called either

depending on where riding,

(gender && orientation unspecific, btw)

back (tandem, trailer, trail-a-bike (3rd wheel),

etc), front (handlebar kid/dog/pet,

bucket/cargo bikes) or side, like a side car,

trike, and other configurations exist

even in bicycles, and eBike options,

but would need to be small, and usually

a stoker, i.e. feed the other pedalling

person, or in the case of robot(s),

maybe electronic/ data mining, /joke2

Developer

Various types of developers too,

say a RPi3, and RPiZeroW

and making your own controllers,

like for 3D printing

and other stuff...

And the motors, and power

circuits, and drive train,

some belt, and other newer

stuff, (direct drive?)

and battery tech,

and wheel design,

and frame design,

and welding, and other

technology, then doing mass

production and distribution

systems for them,

and making welding robots,

and well, you may see,

all sorts of things to geek out on...

Manufacturer

R&D money invested and ROI

(Return On Investment) on all that,

how to not loose our shirts,

businesses, livelihood, lives, etc,

on the money side, as well as the

potentially toxic, and dangerous

mining, much less test riding,

crash test dummy type stuff,

which the user, after tested

hopefully by professionals,

not just JackAsses (see the show,

or basically anything skateboard,

or teen, thereabouts...)

Assumptions

Too many to think about right now,

maybe later, risk management,

and not stupid about it,

but much more to do...

Time Limits

Interest levels,

time and energy,

price points,

shortages of lithium have

occurred when starting out,

but competing with cars,

and laptops, and even infrastructure,

as batteries used in traffic lights,

and other stuff too...

Much less medicating bipolars,

and others, less fortunate...

Links

Hybrid Pedals

http://www.hybridpedals.com/

store burnt down

i discovered when searching

for where a newer shop opened

up in Arlington

near a Mario's (Pizza House?

w a Carvels, but not figure friendly...)

moped store at the next major intersection

in towards DC, and to the north the old

Casual Adventure (now closed),

plus Clarendon,

and other busy North Arlington

bar crawl area(s)...

Oh, and a law school, Bork that...

Hybrid Pedals

also has a store in Baltimore

Many other shops not specializing

in eBikes have them,

not sure which, but think

Conte's around there,

Revolution in more, and other stores,

like Georgetown? and checking some

websites, probably most are dabbling

in it, the wave of the future, high ticket items,

fr those that don't want to (or can't) pedal

a bike, but still want to be out in nature,

in motion...

TheBikeHouse.org

aka .coop,

full disclosure,

which I'm involved with already,

sometimes good, sometime worse,

depends who shows up,

me, too...

PhoenixBikes.org

.com or similar

YouthBikeSummit.org

this week, probably,

not sure that technology

has gotten to the coops,

community bike shops

and youth programs,

don't see them much,

as newer tech, like race

bikes, track bikes, cross

bikes, etc, probably have their

own niche(s), and haven't

made it to soup kitchen equivalents

of restaurants as one or a few used

to say, probably Bike Kitchen related

analogies...

Bike Hospital(s) were more my

comparisons, as younger is when it

is interesting, learning about, and

then you need to be 13+ to be involved

as a student youth mechanic

so the gap is loosing kids, from

a healthy, hopefully sane and safe

green lifestyle path...

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

None yet, usually try at least three,

before making a purchasing decision,

thought it was $1200 for a small

folding eBike, but likely trasnposed

(leaving it...) those numbers,

and out of my range,

personally, but maybe rent, and

more research, plus saving for

parts of it, and add to

PedalCarts2015

PedalCartAlternatives2016

plus drone and robot, and

all sorts of other combinations,

and permutations, etc...

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

Would you be upset by an eBike passing

you in a trail?  Say 10-20 mph?

while you are huffing and puffing,

to get there, manually?

What does the "No Motorized Vehicles" sign

mean?

No autos?

No motorcycles?

No scooters?

No Segways?

No eBikes?

No Blacks?

No Whites?

No Latinos?

No Asians?

No fair?

Discrimination, especially if disabled,

ADA, and limited in other ways,

which many of us are one way or another,

or is it just a money, and jealousy thing?

He/She/It has one, and I don't,

can't afford, can't lift, etc???
