Introduction/Definition/etc
Book with a kid on the front, late 50's, early 60's red crosshatched
pattern, with eyes and mouth closed tightly shut...
As if one were jumping into a pool and didn't want water to get in...
Ironically enough some of the sess pool type experiences
he grows up with, both inside and outside the family are included,
but otherwise a rather positive / uplifting book.by the brother of
Augusten Burroughts, of Running with Scissors
and YouBetterNotCryBySPOILEDAugustenBurroughs fame...
Body
So I'd met John Elder Robison at AFI for a screening
of BenX or something, he was doing the after commentary,
and sold his books afterwards, so had a couple of moments
where he thought he could diagnose Aspergers by people's
voice quality/ tones, that monotone emotions filtered,
Just The Facts Maam, type language and speech pattern
which I may happen to find interesting and / or agree with
even though it describes a little to close to home,
like "I Resemble that Remark"...
First of all, I'm going to have to rename him,
or name him to start, as he calls his mom,
Stupid, his brother Snort, then Vermin,
and some other stuff, so fair is far,
John Elder Robison is now SellOut...
He's gone to Aut$peaks as the token board member,
following some people's ojbections to the eugenics type
policy of super funding genetic testing to basically remove
Autism from the planet... Neurodiversity, and those with
the label, tend to want to have services instead of hatred,
bigotry (as applied to disability) and generally oppose $peaks,
and the parallels to cancer, a plague on society and
basically the portrayal that makes the CrazyBlond
want to drive off the bridge, killing herself, and probably
her Autistic daughter... To me that is not caring,
nor a cure, but plain murder/suicide for someone who
can't cope, and needs serious help herself,
let alone custody change with her offspring...
So this is the context, or part of it, that I read
look me in the eye by SellOut...
His brothers book / video are similarly funny,
and I'm wondering about whether it is ghost written
by Augusten...
Anyways, I hate to be so negative, but you need to understand
the politics behind reading something by someone who is normally
appearing so non descript and PC...
He's an electronics geek, designing circuits for the Band KISS,
Pink Floyd's sound systems company, and many other technological
and automotive geekery...
Oh and worked for the Milton Bradley game company on the early
electronics games, including Simple Simon (?)...
His life story growing up, after having gotten parts of his younger brother's
side of the story, which they seem to cooperate, neh, conspire, mostly
against their parents, his dad an abusive drunk, his mother a nut case,
which is UnPC, so survivor of mental illness... In and out of the state hospital,
so someone most people reading this would sympathize with...
However, this is the children's account of the household,
and moving from New England to the left coast,
and back, finding places, writing an entertaining if not
completely made up memoir... The plausibility seems to be
questionable, given the tricks he plays on people growing up,
including taking a mannequin, making it burn, suspended from
high power electrical lines, causing all sorts of commotion
amongst the town's police, fire and rescue, not to mention
power company. He, of course, calls it in on the illegal
phone tap, serviceman's phone, from someone he dislikes
phone number, IIRC... I'd really have to study the book
to do an analysis word for word, page for page,
and well maybe a typical Aspergian, as he calls them/
us would do that... Like typing in the Big Book
of Alcoholics Anonymous, the first 184 pages, widely
available, though the Fourth Edition is where it's currently
at, digesting the book is an issue for most people,
so having the full text, pre Kindle days, to analyze would help.
But having SoldOut, CopyRight, instead of CopyLeft,
freedom for people's text, maybe non derivitaively,
CreativeCommons, would help us parse the claims,
sales claims, though I generally enjoyed the book,
it does the typical bashing family, getting even,
ala MommyDearest, though not famous, except for Snort/
Vermin, eventually self named Augusten...
I'll have to get back to proper treatment of this book,
and maybe provide a case by case quoted list of
good examples, citing fair use for a review...
