So it occurred to me that the Earn A Bike
may be a model for obtaining a pet as well...
Volunteer with the shelter, a vet, some pet related
non profits, and learn, do a checklist,
and obtain a shelter or other pet,
for yourself...
GiftAPet, and other variations may exist too...
And it's probably obvious a pet is not a bike,
even with the analogy of an iron horse,
and other similarities...
Probably been going on since time began,
Daddy, can i have a horse,
and if living on a farm, have others,
and need transportation say to school,
(you know Abe Lincoln walked 10 miles to school,
in the snow, etc)
Yes, there is a lot of responsibility in having a
pet, service animal, bike, car, motorcycle,
wife, house, kid(s), etc...
Ok, i don't have all those things, nor a job, per say,
but have had many of those before, so know something
of what i speak.... But with humility, and some
quibling?
anyways, something for people to consider,
many kids want pets, many places can allow pets,
and like the digital divide many gaps exist
where some can have and some can not,
unfairly at that...
It's a life long commitment,
and doing damage with euthanizing pets,
shelter animials, with vulnerable kids,
and others, imnsho...
Skills, responsibility, and other characteristics,
the divide that more people are scared of dogs,
because didn't grow up with them, in the house,
aparment/ around...
Not that different than people not learning to swim,
as pools not available to many others,
back pre Civil Rights, and still to the this
day limited other ways, perhaps, idk,
but can easily imagine, private swimming
and diving lessons others had, and i didn't
not unlike tennis, etc...
Careers in Veterinary medicine,
pet care, pet supply stores,
dog wakling, cat sitting, and general
friendliness to animals and others,
seems like it might make a better world,
like the star fish that get thrown back
into the ocean, instead of frying somewhere
in the sun, or whale, etc... Helped that one...
All sorts of things to work out,
and research, and likely leaving that to others,
probably thought of before, though i haven't heard of it,
as such...
Broke as Bunny, trying to turn it in,
get another, mine's broken, doesn't play,
go out, old, sick, etc...
and trying to help with some cat food
while walking to the store anyways,
doesn't cost that much, even for poor old disabled me,
and like taking shopping carts back up the hill,
something i probably do anyways,
AFAC has had cat food, instead of tuna fish,
the cans look the same, and i think the animal
shelter has had some food give away(s),
pet adoption drives, and events,
likely overtaxing the already stressed system,
with washington moving around so much,
military and other reasons...
Hardship cases, such as my move,
pet deposits, more monthly,
food, sitting, vet bills espseically,
my golden had heart problems and
it was a lot for someone of my income,
and pets age likely quicker than humans,
so wasn't thinking as a young teen,
that having a dog would be most of my teenage
years into college, going away and a call
from my dad, come get your dog,
i can't.
Failing out of college, my girlfriend at the time
more interesting than the studying dry engineering,
and other problems, limited income, student housing,
etc... Likely start younger, we had a golden when
my paretns were stilll married/ pre divorce
and move to the big city,
and probably thought couldn't live in apartments,
in some ways might have helped, but she had
hid dysplasia, a genetic disease of large dogs,
where bones grow too quickly and not well formed,
a lot like arthritus (sp?) and fairly constant paina,a
goldens were and likely are still overbred,
trying not to carry on that pedigree,
selective breeding, etc...
finding housing is difficult with pet(s),
and many have size limits on apartments,
30 pounds or so, so pocket pets are more likely,
but service animals are more popular now,
including emotional support animals,
and disabilites, ADA, etc since the
leglistaion in the early 1970s, iirc.
Similar with wheelchair, curb cut outs,
and button pressing doors, to open,
paddle like handles on doors, etc...
Even AmazonVille, unclaimed deliveries
of pet supplies to the local animal shelter,
there's a lot of undelivered, and misdelivered
packages, used to just be (mostly) USPS, iirc,
the way excess food is handled, to food banks,
pet food and supplies could be too...
As adjunct, and/or separate, mixing pet and human
food is difficult ,as mentioned cat food and
cans of tuna, etc may look very similar,
just reading things/labels in clearance racks,
your average can of dog food labelling makes
it look alot like human food,
imnsho, so sorting, etc takes a while...
Learning what a bird, cat, dog, rabbit,
guinea pig, hamster, rat, snake, etc can eat,
not chocolate, no cooked bones, as splinter,
and other things, Tylenol, and other medications,
thought harmless/ little harm with humans, etc
may be lethal for other species,
and other things, table scraps, feeding pets
at the table, or separately, and not unlike
feeding schedules of babies, baby birds,
and kittens, puppies, etc like farming
an early rise to walk the animal,
helps to have a let out back yard instead
of walking down flights of stairs, waiting ona
broken elevator, or slow, one is out,
the pandemic changed a lot of things,
and carrying/ rolling instead of washing
daily, to go for walks, a lot like snow
and rain days, and deicing/salt in paws,
pads, etc...
Housetraining, many people thinking of starting
families start with a pet, and see if they
can get along and stay home enough to care
for pets, before humans,
that 5 Pound sack of flour some schools
may use as a training for baby care,
many lessons learned caring for other species
before human(s), including infants,
like elder care. whicch tend to be put out
to pasture/ nursing homes instead of in the
larger extended families, typical with some
cultures...
Transit with animals, that bales of hay
to feed horses, if grown on the farm,
one thing but importing from elsewhere,
neighbors? who has a paddock for the horse?
training? breaking? or wild and free...
Many things to consider, and learn,
ActiveTransitForPECredit
gets kids and other out walking/ exercising
to take an animal out
sleep patterns change,
loneliness may lessen
and loss of an animal/ pet
one of the difficult things,
Protection of abuse and neglect,
the ASPCA, PETA, and other animal
rights organizations, might be
volunteer and partners one way or another,
elders may want visiting rights,
say if help sponsor a pet,
likek the century ride, do the century
and you can have the pet,
or help with funding, daya/ week
pet food per mile, logging exercise
walks, checklists of routine(s),
cleaning up after, vacuuming,
kitty litter box changes,
vomit, chewing, fresh water,
and cleaning up after spills,
adorable as puppies, kittens
less so like begging at the table
or howling through the night/
day, so systems changes,
brining to school, checking health,
getting along, and learning
relating, my cat and bunny don't
like each other, not that different
than sibling rivalry?
vying for attention from the parent(s)/
caregiver(s), and treated fairly?
or inside/ outside/ one on the floor,
another in the bed,
small v. large,
the dog takes the whole bed,
the cat fits right here,
etc...
But better perhaps than to live life
andnever really connecting/
that friend you never knew you had
could have, and likely told you couldn't
while many being destroyed as not cared
for in kill shelters..
