Introduction/Definition/etc
Blood Sugar Diabetes testing equipment,
bought for $7.99 plus tax, open box
(problems there alone) and can't install apps to try it,
besides finding testing strips, though a battery
and USB cable, plus carrying case,
and lancet drums, was/were included...
Body
Browsing a drug store I'm not usually in,
and the clearance area has an open box
~$8 electronic blood sugar testing device,
which I thought I would try, even before
an A1C test (some home kits exist in
the $40 range, iirc) but no luck/ no joy
as they used to say...
Finding an app, while using free library WiFi
before it opened for a tax deadline (libraries
don't have forms like they used to,
just printing, and have to show ID to do that,
iirc/afaict) was nearly impossible...
Trying later from the Roche website,
and it doesn't work on any of my devices...
Tried the old iPhone 4 later, and no joy
there either...
So my only option, once I get the test strips,
might be the provided USB cable and what?
Writing down numbers like in the old days?
Several non manufacturer apps seemed
to get way to personal, way to quickly,
and other things went right to supplies,
so predatory Pharm seemed to
happen quickly, and that was after the
drug store chain register people had
problems, not wanting to even sell it
to me, needed approval, because it
was tagged $7.99, and selling
open things that may have sharps,
and other blood safety, universal
precautions, but maybe the device
was not compatible, the previous
purchaser/ opening person(s)
needed something else in the box,
but it seemed complete, though likely
doesn't work with their BlueTooth (tm) device
either, so brought it back,(or store staff
showing something/ consultation on how it
works, display model? but where? etc)
So not really an option for me, maybe learn
some BlueTooth that way, with sniffing,
packets, signals, etc...
Links
Find some sometime...
Maybe after some elusive test strips...
Roche Stuff
Saw something about Roche in some big deal,
bought a small company, merged with something
like a software company that does web
based diabetes management, or similar,
may have that way off base, will see,
if ever look it up...
(uses Apple HealthKit, or similar...
likely why it's only available in the latest
models, and maybe not on Android yet,
if ever, real soon now VapourWare?)
Normally the device is $40 or so,
without test strips, like printer ink cartridges
that is where they get you, besides pricking
yourself with a lancet, etc...
Blood handling,
Sharps disposal, etc...
Device is single user only no sharing,
can't handle samples from multiple people,
or similar...
There seems to be smaller USB thumb
drive devices that are smaller
(in the $10 range?), but getting
rather small, Nano, etc and other models
of the same company...
Reading the small device screen may be an
issue, among others...
House Brands
Competing pharmacy House brands
exist, and their supplies were easily
available, multiple stores, but same chain,
people may do mail order, like pills,
get bulk and hoarding probably,
if found the test strips run out quickly
Other places, a grocery store with a pharmacy
department, it was behind the gated counter,
and had to be open and talk to staff to
even get them...
While condoms were nearby in the unlocked
area, maybe what it used to be like to buy
prophallactics (sp?), the pill (script only, iirc)
but someone having sugar problems, behavior
might go weird, vision problems reading small
print, etc..
Test Strips Semi Update
Not included, and expensive at about
$1/each in bulk. But only sold in 100 quantity
so $100 or so for a self test?
Likely why Harris Teeter and maybe others
keep the small packages behind
the locked Pharm counter area(s)...
Some insurance may cover certain
brands, and meters, so further complicated,
as explained by one HT store pharma
person upon opening up...
Script helps defray the costs, but blood
sugar test strips, lancets, (in drums),
and need other blood safety stuff,
alcohol swabs, bandaides (tm?), etc
and its' like printers and ink cartridges,
toner, supplies will get you and add
up to more than the device itself...
Conclusion
Summary of experience or similar
No Joy, as they say, can't seem to use it,
needs testing strips, which likely expire
before the device, and other problems,
of blood sampling, not the least of which,
is what happened with it before, why it
was open box and sold used, etc...
The price was nice, but the hidden dangers
exist... Not knowing status may be more of
an issue, with PreExisting Conditions, etc,
not sure some people would want to know,
if no treatment, coverage, etc exists...
YMMV, IANAL, etc...
Discussion
A place for feedback on the page presented
What risks do you take not knowing some
medical information about yourself?
Have you had the preventative body scan?
How much was that?
Was it worth it?
Is it now covered by most insurance(s)?
Prostate checked at 50?
PAP tests, mammograms, etc for females?
HPV, etc?
What blood risks do you take?
What about every day risks?
Using the bathroom?
A dirty, say bar bathroom or chemical
toilet(s)???
How clean is your personal one?
Could you eat off of it?
(not a challenge)
More of an OCD self test...
