Introduction/Definition/etc

Kennan Garvey Memorial Ride

a century and few less mileage options

(15 S. Arlington to BikeNetic in Falls Church,

40 Herndon Green Lizard

60 Leesburg Plum Grove reCyclery

90 Purcellville Bikes & Coffee?

 all the W&OD

 & back

(plus part of Arlington Loop

to make 10 more to 100,

though I recall a

(Seagull? that i did, when younger)

century as 105, maybe English?

Metric 100 km

is about 60 some miles, iirc,

check my math)...

PhoenixBikes fundraiser ride

this time for a new van,

(Last was move out of the cramped

old shack in the Barcroft park)...

Misgivings

While I have misgivings:

I prefer all volunteer orgs (AVOs),

Less hierarchy, more peer,

I don't think traditional carbon based vans

teaches whole different biking lifestyle(s) well,

Maybe alternatives:

hybrid,

biodiesel,

fleet of cargo (e?)bikes,

Combinations of above Plus:

Add solar panels atop

the Arlington Mill Community Center building

to offset X,Y,Z in addition to

energy & toxicity drains/sinks

Phoenix Bikes moving in causes

X=Elevators

Y=Lights left on in the gym constantly

Z=Additional Refrigerators for food safety

(Maybe @ AFAC warehouse too?)

Fleet of eBikes/scooters,

newer cargo/utility rentals, shares,

Free Bikes,etc

A food /soup kitchen like

co business for the corner space...

Many shops have hang out food, etc

for sale, kind of the refuel

while servicing approach..

Instead of dropoff...

Even the YBS guy talked of

coffee plus bike shops...

Not that I think coffee is a good thing...

MtRBC and elsewhere feeding bikers

and hungry is an issue, still,

(Some teens being continually hungry,

As growing,

Others school reduced lunch

summer time unavailable,

lack of cooking skills

while parent/guardian/caregiver(s)

working, etc)

in one of the wealthiest regions

in the World...

Policy issues of Small violins only

allowed for the local hungry,

everyone is sick, if not happy

clinical exclusionary biases...)

Teens, and others are a moody lot,

in general...

Poverty adds to it, imnsho,

/SteppingOffSoapBoxMomentarily

ItCouldHappen

StrangerThingsHave

etc...

Registration Prohibitive to many Poor

I didn't have the registration costs,

just doing prep for such a long ride

further out than most public transit backups

just rushed and got a bottom bracket,

($35 wanted $50)

and the store/shop that sold it to me,

had to work on it

to see what it needed (WTF???)

taking over an hour and a half,

but I was allowed in the service area,

space reminds me of assmonkey  taking over

shops, but this isn't Texas, not gas fueled,

but close...),

install it, I'm somehow incapable,

despite advanced mech class (es) so long ago,

don't really learn it, unless you try it,

beater bike learning mechanics on, etc..,

denying me the learning,

what most shops do, talk down to,

condition you to become dependent on them...

You cannot learn that you need a professional...

Pay here...

Pedal Mysteriously Broken

During what was going to be a

prevolunteering break

at TBH...  too warm,

after 40+ miles already,

harassed, just left after picking up

and paying for my new TBH cap,

ordered months before...

Compare Shops v. Coops

Exercise left for the reader,

for now...

Employment Options for Grads Limited

Like mental health consumer run

drop in center paid work,

assume all the grads of earn a bike

are going on to work where?

(SpokesEtc was just looking,

but couldn't get it right

at the former FreshBikes site)...

Fundraising Options Slim For Poor

I don't know of many to solicit from

who would have much to help with

the $100 to $500 fundraising levels,

so I naturally plod ahead I signed up,

hoping to feel ok,

weather to work out,

volunteered anyways,

learned some things by the process,

issues surrounding,

but not really the event, itself...

Body

Original Text

Longer rides cluster out near the far end

of the W&OD

Leesburg

Purcellville

(~10-15 miles apart)

According to BikeWashington.org's WAD

pages the High Power lines/Electrical wires stop,

so more shade, and scenic,

But also more remote, with

fewer and fewer options for plan b,c,d,...)

Researching my options:

Need an App

C&OCanalTrust

has a ~$1 app for that,

maybe the W&OD rail trail needs one?

See my separate page for that:

WODAppIdear2018

Drone Fly Further Out?

Since Purcellville may be 30-35 miles

from the

Capital/Pentagon/White Nationalists House/Reagan National, etc

FRZ, what about far enough

from Leesburg Airport

and other flight restrictions?

Check

B4UFly?

Out there?

If I were going that far,

took enough time to prepare,

etc, but like NorthByNorthEast2018

kinda wing n a prayer planning,

I remembered the event,

had not done the first four (4) KGMR,

missed volunteering at the black tie /

Makers Ball fundraiser and

in order to stay current

(read bike hospital like privs)

...

And a miracle occurs...

Though I'm non religious,

just the intractable physics problem ...

fast forward deets...

5 Sets of Deer? Seen Early

On the way there,

some startling...

One small thing, quick little bugger,

maybe fox?

But not sly enough moves,

Afaict in the dark/early am dawn light...

Usually pairs, but seeing all

and counting them

while under way,

rushing to a timed start...

Check-in Add Times

I added detail to the process of

my first rest stop volunteering:

the Time people arrived,

while not a race,

somehow just check mark

seemed like a waste of ink...

Clumps/clusters of people

arriving similar times

(In Order of talked to me,

Not split second,

nor even split minute timing,

Assume +/- minute

tolerances for groups,

some go grab food first,

I find clipboard,

& my voice,

learn some names,

pronunciation guesses ?

Others I've heard of elsewhere,

but privacy should preclude

outing them

especially with dual,

possibly conflicting roles of

Volunteering and Journalling this,

Participant observer has its drawbacks...

...

Adding Time of Arrival Detail gives:

Rider last seen?

Plus on the way back?

Maybe around whom?

Riding with/ near?

When hours doing time

waiting/worrying before snacks I didn't eat

(not a rider, just a volunteer ,

a poor one that pedaled to volunteer,

reality check with the other volunteer

I should sample what we are giving out?

didn't sound warm / approving at all...

Having been on time,

I did most of the carrying/setup,

I tasked her to put up signs,

but no tape, staples, anything provided,

one lawn stake hanger type thing,

and posterboard,

nothing to attach to even those...

only two signs up at my 08:00a arrival,

helped me find the shop,

and since so early spinned thru town

to be able to talk anyone in,

answer local questions,

find my way out,

research for another time, etc

Like Adventure Cycling Association

transcontinental maps sets,

there is adventure in the maps,

and likely devils triangle, plus

monsters lurk here, etc...

Newer technology may help,

you have a compass ?

There is an app for that?

My smartphone has

the required hardware?

But batteries give out,

Redundancy, low tech backups,

Boy/cub/girl/etc be prepared...

Tired and disoriented go together,

like mayhem, peer pressure,

Weekends summer time and dwis,

even near trails/parks

...

Farmers Market

Before volunteering,

since made it there ~1/2 hour early,

and shop door, lights out

and all closed up,

I reconnoitered Old Town/historic,

saw a sign, and

since one of the few things open early,

visited the Leesburg FM,

took pictures,

saw what I might want to eat,

if I had more than a dollar in checking,

a few dollars in emergency funds

(Cold? water and/or soda machine?),

and some reduced fare card money for WMATA

bus and rail ( ~15+ miles back and Saturday so

no regional commuter workweek stuff, afaict)

...

Times Up

When my hours of volunteering was done,

not eating riders snacks being the most difficult,

as hungry, packed 2-3 cans of emergency food,

plus can opener ,  plasticwares,

but still thinking C&O Canal camping

if have White's Ferry $1+ fee, etc...

But didn't bring the BoB, tent, hammock, etc...

So all packed back up,

and

Rather Discouraged

by the incoming volunteer(s),

feeling not part of,

others drove there,

I left 4.45a or so, predawn,

had (minor once diagnosed)

mechanical problems,

Discovered in prep missing

~ $100 in sentimental &

useful bike multitools,

turned out newly installed

meter cable loose in spokes,

and made noise while in motion,

difficult to see while on it,

without a stand,

in the dark, sleepy,

stressed about so many unknowns

high risk, etc

Hours of not do snacks for me,

a volunteer,

though

I "Earned" lunch and a t shirt

as a work skills place

each volunteer task was advertised/

marketed as a "job"

(Read kid first assignments/service learning time?)

Volunteer, seniors, especially disabled beware:

Ableism but

No benefits

No health

No time off for good behavior...

Attitude, bordering in ordering me around

and difficult to ascertain:

Could I ride back?

When you write about this: be kind

Take rail: not an option for everyone

Aside:

Many may not know my feet were run over

by a MetroAccess (ADA Paratransit) sent

overflow taxi,

Calling to cancel a scheduled trip

the next day with the same company

was very entertaining to the call center,

Not to me,

and near the 9/11 anniversary,

then and now...

Pain walking far, and lingering

transit union difficulties persist...

(Deep bruising found on/in one foot

the day after KGMR..)

Possible Causation(s)?:

Boots,

too many miles,

More severe?

What???)

60 miles is not a good cardiac

stress test, they are done like

Track days, medical personnel,

Defibrillators, crash carts, etc around..

Anyways,

Not doing the century myself

some 50+ mile days in the last month(s)

so 60 not impossible/implausible/improbable,

the hours of volunteering

and ride schedule would not allow it

So maybe a self discovery/

self directed tour instead...

Check that off the bucket list?

I generally don't enjoy people that much

so crowds, constantly being around others

more draining to me as an introvert,

possible autistic spectrum,

depressive, recluse, etc

labelese  (sp?)

Maybe get geeky and

thinking on making an app,

for use offline, without data plan,

but update when at a free WiFi...

Cataloging the variety of bridge types

self made some feature creeping

(Geek speak for too loose specs,

that balloon development

into busting, similar to gradual school,

ABD, etc)

technical project,

not that

Munged, MungedMetaData2017

Munged2017 etc has enough progress,

Etc

The usual :

Create the idears that others steal, etc

Time Limits

Event: 7a-4p

9-10 hours

My ~10 miles / hour

= No stops

&& Run out of time

At my speed(s)

Mid day prime burning times: 10a-2p

Might have been the time to volunteer,

But only 8.30-11 shift

And 11-2.30 or so shifts designated

Mostly assuming people are cheerleading

others doing the ride...

Volunteering early out there got around

some of my sleep schedule issues.

But maybe the cookie

Diabetes or just long day and felt drugged down

Only thing eaten was the sandwich, BBQ

chips and cookie...

70g of mostly sugar cookie does that?

So drugged?

Basically raw / extremely rare roast beef bloody

not the cheese option and not a BBQ sauce

Not cheese, but something else topping it?

Paid Staff, the sandwich shop,

gang like kids infultrating orgs, etc

may have been laughing giving me

something that might make me sick?

Other targeting

seemed to be happening at the event, too...

Tag cloud, full text search,

functions may help here...

Providing the linkage/connecting tissues

explicitly may also...

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

Some bikers and orgs are obnoxious.

"Arlington doesn't like their poor" someone told me

while excluding me from a store.

And i'm seeing that elitism, classism, ableism

in many places, raise it's ugly head,

maybe that  Hate stuff again,

Besides seasonal back to school stuff,

more mh blamed shootings recently...

I thought I was single handing the table,

both good and bad

and a staff email shout out and

basically board members, etc showed up,

so I wasn't suitable, talked around,

avoided, ignored, etc

...

As a first time ride support,

plus maybe gender biases,

memorial loss (i pushed that the south county

Ffx drop in center Not be named after

yet another dead mh consumer like LMEC,

bad for depressives,

cannot get away from it, etc ...)

and other issues likely bleeding into

interpersonal, org and cultural divides...

Plusses:

5 sets of deer seen

Visit Leesburg, getting there and by bike,

Leesburg FM

See new BBQ place in Ashburn

T shirt

Minuses:

Some of the people

(Riders were OK  )

Bad lunch?

Not equal, better than attitudes

Separate

Pit stops on the way back,

No rider number so likely just seen as a vagrant

Etoh? sold in bikes   store,

Mid day sun

Overall:

Been there, Done That,

Got the tshirt, even if volunteer only,

and gang like red again,

I'm more touring, commuting, utility,

reddish skin (even before sun / heat stroke),

and further greying/losing hair...

Skinny tire racers exist, but Not me...

I didn't even pack light,

same old stuff, just going further out...

Camping and 75 mile 2 day Bike Washington

WAD +

C&O Canal route likely better,

Just overnight,

No showering options found in prep research,

Lacking money for early pool,

community gym for non county resident, etc

Showing up with so many unknowns,

social situations in particukar, troublesome,

for me..

YMMV

My miles ~45, took rail Reston to EFC,

peak sun (+/- bad food?)

(Diagnose dynohub fighting too?

Temp, miles, etc?

Shop repairs plugged it back in

while not really used???)

likely taking its toll(s) on me.

I didn't die, felt like it,

but live to bike another day...

(What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger?

I can think of many exceptions to that...)

Maybe do like Appalachian Trail hikers,

in segments?

Heat may kill rider(s)

and self paced,

completion some other cooler season

advisable, hyperthermia is deadly,

and this year temps not very high

for August but why risk / push it?

Cloud cover minimal for peak sun burning times,

Little to no tree canopy as high power lines like

Car door lane aka bike lane, and we get doored,

while likely similarly blamed too...

Car centric society people buying a van

that may not even fit in the garage,

like AFAC did...

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

What makes a good org for kids?

One that practices:

elitism?

Classism?

Ableism?

Meritocracy?

Or do we go back to would you want

your kid acting like the staff has/does?

Is all biking good,

just because it is biking?
