Introduction/Definition/etc

New to me device,

refurbished, and winDoze laden,

just getting specs seems to be an issue

will see if it can live as a penguin...

Body

Original Text

Screen brightness, dimming on me,

and getting old, larger screen and models

somewhat based on screen size,

maybe actually measure it?

Big and heavy, relative to smart phones,

iPads, and other current technology,

and not a 2 in 1 type touchscreen,

unfortunately, but for Linux distros and

giving a personality transplant,

from greedy to community minded,

will see...

Decisions

How far to go on it with Blowz?

Firefox

LibreOffice

CygWin

Garmin Express

not Connect

which is app only...

MPlayer

requires 7z compression

and still doesn't install right...

Java

LibreOffice an old StarOffice

turned Open Office,

and Oracle corporate

changing license,

and other issues that may effect

wanting to run it, or not....

Virus

MSI (m$ image?) file found but not installed?

Basic Windows protections

and WiFi blocking even this site,

and big brother/ evil corp entities

are out to get you, they control what

you can see, and not, and make money

off of it, selling information and

other stuff possible, voting and

control those poor masses

was the tone of the meeting

where we got them...

The opposite of the advertised

Free Laptop.  Strings and implementation

make it unusable, demeaning, and demanding,

signing for being monitored, reasonable access,

when illegal access has already occurred,

installed a bracket for the wifi, without

notice, nor permission to enter, and

county, landlord, contractor(s), think that

is reasonable, and giving data,

and further personal information,

is somehow acceptable, otherwise,

nothing for you, you are non compliant

for even complaining about being abused,

etc...

Blows Updates

I'm not used to M$ power down updating,

I want to see how it does it,

and control the updating process,

and restarts and other issues...

Need to control the updating,

as some updating may actually break stuff,

like going TCM (trusted computing?) firmware

updating and it may lock out

Linux installing,

aka rooting in other deviceWorldz...

Hardware

CPU

Unintroduced speaker/presenter

said it was i5 not 7

might even be AMD with the

heat it's kicking out,

WinTel and other monopoly

anti trust issues probable,

as corp lifestock fresh meat...

GPU

There are likely chipset issues,

in unknown hardware,

and running what I want to run...

WiFi

BroadCom and other binary drivers

issues likely in this class of stuff...

Will see...

HD not SSD

Small 500 Gig hard drive

not SSD (Solid State Drive)

like modern machines

CDROM/DVDDrive

Dual/Double Layer?

Not BluRay, afaict...

SD Slot

Contains one,

instead of having to have a USB

converter/adapter...

Still need the MicroSD adapter,

from SD, and lose the ability to turn it

write protect, like the old 5 1/4 floppy

notches and tape...

USB3.0

3.0 is more modern than I'm used to,

on the host side, had a drive enclosure

that used it, but nothing on the host side,

yet, so will see...

Inspection Tools

My BogoMIPS and other hardware toolset

are Linux based, so have to get there first,

to see what is even under the hood...

CPUID and other app stuff,

so much phone and tablet background,

will see how the trip back in time works out...

BIOS screen shows some,

got a photo, but snipping out Serial Numbers

and other privacy stuff, maybe later, will see...

Case

Case hinge only opens so far,

and stays,

so will not go rather flat,

more than 90 degrees, but

less than 90+45, will not go 180 degrees

like newer 2 in 1 and flip all the way

backwards like a few...

Double jointed/ hinged it may be called...

As far as in the lap,

hits touchpad buttons when in my lap,

my big beer/ pot belly,

neither caused by those substances,

and it hits by mistake...

Keyboard

Yep got one,

instead of touchscreen,

takes some getting used to,

up there with MacBookPro

and where the things are placed,

backspace and delete are different,

so will be a while to retrain the fingers

for spacings, but easier than kid OLPC

and small mini keyboards

with RPi?  Will see...

Bluetooth

Has it, and turned it off, as not using it,

so why leave a port open...

Need to find easy ways of turning back on

and off like for tablets/ smartphones,

device controls.  Hot keys or Function Keys

or similar buttons are usually device specific

and tailored to the OEM (Original Equipment

Manufacturer), customizing rarely worth it,

will see if anyone did that already,

for Linux/ FLOSS (Free /Libre Open Source Software)...

Audio

Combined Mic Headphones jack

common for the newer stuff, but old timers,

not really used to it, gamer headsets

probably are used to it, a cheap one bought,

a long time ago, inland like, and maybe try it out..

I might have to find an airline like two plug to

more connections adapter for older cheaper

headsets to plug...

Camera

Seems like it would have one,

a dot there,

but maybe not included,

winblows software didn't find it,

maybe with kids and cheaper,

have to clip on one,

if wanted...

Battery

Life is about 2.5 hours, if that,

charging took a while, screen dimness

and battery life related, as really bright screen

setting and drains faster/ charges slower

Other times with less heavy installing use

4.5 hours listed, as run time remaining,

but start to really be a power user

and goes back down to half maximum...

Fan

Heat producing fan,

almost hand warmer style,

good for cold now,

but bad for summer time

coming up...

overheating likely?

CPU efficiency?

Told it was i5 Intel,

but maybe AMD instead,

will see, also said Dell, at first,

only to find out HP,

Leveno (sp?) (IBM?) was the other big

corporate possibility,

and buying a pallet and refurbishing

was a likely transition...

Parts is Parts

What's actually inside of large corporate

hardware is really questionable,

parts is parts, and specificity,

and looking tin SuperMicro

putting Chinese spying chip on it,

with the compression of video

Elemental and other leaks,

into corporate supply chain,

and that made news...

Might even be a collectors item,

to have the spy chip(s),

but not these?

Will see...

More to learn...

Screen Scratched

Worn thin anti glare in a spot,

where keyboard and screen compress,

paper over keyboard, I used to put an

anti-static/scratch wipe cloth between,

and have destroyed an

OLPC carrying it around with a likely

frozen condensing water bottle...

OLPC are more difficult to find parts for,

water and condensation don't mix well

with electronics, at least the older stuff,

some smart phones now are water resistant,

bordering on proof, but not the older stuff...

Older is cheaper, in some ways,

but not always in total cost of ownership,

a winblows concept, lockin

operating systems

aka bloatware make using the latest a requirement,

and corporate requires say a finger print reader

for federal security standards (FIPS?),

and there is a pallet maker to off load the old stuff,

and try to write it off, tax wise,  to a non profit,

charity, and see if it still has some life to it,

with less fortunate...

Hand me down, has limitations,

if you have nothing,

in my case not much,

5 years is very long time,

WinBlows 2010 is the latest,

Windows 10,

and that is 8 years, going on 9 now,

with a lifecycle of a year for smartphones,

5 for a laptop, even the class name is changing,

but quickly goes back to a gift horse analogy,

not supposed to look it in the mouth,

you have to feed it, check dental,

ironically part of my tooth fell out,

and competing needs of fix it,

buy a battery, bigger drive, memory, uSD, etc

all not really possible in limited funds...

Time is the major variable,

income, and expenditures,

the months waiting,

weeks in back to school sales,

and goes off sale,

(build up to xmas prices go up,

some  times/places)

price points and behind the curve

before even started,

but I am a computer snob,

check BikeSnob and draw your own

conclusions, have heat stroke carrying

a brick around, and break it quicker,

but no buyers protection,

little support, and short time

evaluation times might have helped,

before large scale purchasing,

needs assessment, a laptop bigger than the

kids back, not really fitting into a backpack

of a small kid, but desktop replacement

was the old paradigm, now smaller is better,

diamonds and bigger is better,

(yeah, I've heard of cut/clarity/color/quality...)

heat usage, energy efficiency,

and seems like a docking station port on the bottom

and other things to learn, rain, and abrasion a biggie,

new toy in parts, crashed and destroyed in less

than a day, and non replaceable...

Corporate environments, a room/ shelf full of them,

like carrying library of OLPC, kinda heavy at first,

but 10-20+ of them and 5 to 10 pound class,

machines/ devices and you know it...

Dropping the big laptop more likely

when just learning about it,

some physical sense memory

as one gets used to it, possible

for some...  Others, geeks in particular

may continue to be clumsy,

ad nausium (sp?)...

VGA out

HDMI it is not, some old monitors,

newer stuff and expensive cables,

plug sizes and limited edge space,

Lightning and other special high cost,

proprietary patented stuff, long time

before become common place and cheap,

and eventually too expensive to maintain,

old IBM360, not much processing power

historical only interest, the power requirements

and space requirements, vs. the learning...

Display Port

Looks like it may have a Display Port too,

not sure differences, maybe just a plug adapter

thing, will see...

Find the Mouse Pointer

No longer a mouse, touchpad,

even the driver for that, and hand size,

etc...

Accessability settings

I need to find, fairly quickly.

testing had a control-shift-plus,

i remembered basic clipboard bindings,

C, X, S, V and Z and other stuff

but zooming is +/-

...

Modified Text

What's Missing?

The users in this gifting stuff..

Lifecycle patterns of older equipment...

What Can Be Found?

What Can Not Be Found?

How To Analyze?

Lenses

Noob

Adding an operating system isn't as difficult

as it used to be, but is a learning curve

and risk,

other ways are adding a disk to it,

and trying that way,

after say trying a LiveCD

bootable and run in memory,

but slow, and get feet wet,

so to speak...

Then decide to install or not,

based on that exprience(s)

realizing a lot faster from hard drive

or use/ make a USBStick

with that distro on it...

All good learning

when WinBlows goes belly up,

soon enough anyways...

Assumptions

Free is better than nothing?

Wasted effort and frustration

v. going to look for what i really want...

Time Limits

For a three year wifi contract,

these machines will be beyond

the ancient they already are now,

and life time of electronics stuff

is very short...

Saturday tech support, one of my most

busy times, likely others, and the only

time offered, I stopped by

and no one seen.

Build your own, (read compile source

for the OS and apps, from Stages,

starting entirely from scratch source,

or partially down the path...)

Compiler settings for specific hardware

instead of generic Pentium, etc...

i386, 486, 586, etc in the olden days

or maybe even compiling for

other processor types like on smart phones/

RPi, etc..

more to learn, and a way, maybe to find out,

but likely require another drive, for space

and safety in booting...

One of the most risky things is partitioning

drives, if not a complete backup, then

might lose info, and become a real

brick, cannot boot, which reminds me

rescue CDs, are popular Windoze fixing

and alternative safety OSs to

boot into for blows hygiene, etc...

Knoppix was one LiveCD,

bootable OS, and run, then added

persistence, keeping data between boots,

but moving from CDs to solid state

USB sticks, memory cards, etc,

as physical drives are slow

and plastic media piles up,

land fill, etc...

Cheap to start, but costly in the long run,

especially over decade(s)+,

so reusing my old sticks, from

say Fedora 10, now on 29 or so,

even before it was called Fedora,

it was Red Hat number (6-10?)

and split into community and

Centos, or similar named corporate

version, for support, etc reasons,

choosing Long Term Support, as it's

called in Ubuntu land, and don't have to

reinstall every 6 months, and some

do Dist-upgrade between versions,

but if need and want some newer software,

plus cleaning drives, which also reminds

me LVM logical volume management,

and moving partitions, adding drives easier,

but learning curve there too, as i started

in ext3 and 4 time frame, NTFS and FAT32

are the M$ world formats...

more to learn, and reasons to do so,

unless a corp clown, and can't run it,

as work declares you have to think/

use a certain product, etc...

OS/2 and Presentation Manager

and corporate buying and M$ lying

was some of my reasons for going

Apple and later Linux, M$DOS sucked

and later Windows 1.0 etc coming from

minicomputers VAX, DEC10, etc,

workstations, before PCs became a thing,

z80, 6502, and other geezer stuff,

to go fast you started learning assembly,

as BASIC, and limitations of interpreted

instead of compiled, speed, and control,

and other reasons, besides just learning...

Languages, PASCAL, later some C, C++

but never really took to that, higher level

FORTRAN, Lisp, and more esoteric stuff,

Database, and the survey type stuff,

but I digress, as an old math teacher

(Calculus 1?) used to say...

uses Red Hat's Fedora

but might load on other distros,

just more effort required.

Used to run some on Ubuntu,

but not friendly with the NSA stuff,

aka Sugar on a Stick

still on DVD+/- but when have some

extra money for more solid state memory/

storage, save the drive that wears out,

some I/O errors already seen encoding

audio cds and copying burned disc

from elsewhere on here...

https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

NOOBs isn't a bad way to start

it will help download many different distros,

some special purpose media players,

and main  Raspbian

...

Rescue CDs

Lively several possibles,

will have to look into which might be good...

cannot really go back,

once install Linux on a windows machine

and windows really barfs, reinstalling

windows will probably want to wipe out Linux

to rescue itself, as it generally doesn't think

there is anything else in the world, besides

itself...

and the regular world domination,

greed, monopolizing, antitrust, etc...

If starting from a blank drive,

Windows wants to go on first, then

make room around it, or better yet,

never install windows, and get hooked

into paying, and paying, and paying,

without code, needing support, etc,

instead of learning curve of Linux

and how things work, finding source

code, finding distros, and a new religion

of sorts, etc...

Rebel Code and other stuff may help

learning, YMMV...

Ubuntu

https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

18.10 downloaded,

burned with M$ burning

(included in OS) and

installed, choosing alongside Windows

and took half the 500 gig drive,

by default, might have wiped off Windows,

or just kept minimal windows space,

maybe shrink ntfs/vfat/ whatever partition type

it is later, will see...

Running now, writing this...

Some screen rotating issues,

seems to have tablet like screen rotate,

and knows where it's turned, older stuff

didn't have sensors for that...

But baby steps into going towards 2 in 1s

i guess...

Addendum Latest Kernel Doesn't Boot

So just select the older one on the Grub

boot menu and hope you don't inadvertently

clean up the older ones, by mistake

beware of autoremove

and hopefully they will fix

seemed to be in networking

and boot waiting infinitely to finish

c-a-delete and got to grub menu

rescue mode in the latest kernel

didn't help

so had to go backwards

likely a networking card related

but rescue mode goes without modules

iirc, so problem built in to new kernel?

Other machines may not have the exact

same hardware/ options , so ymmv

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

None yet, only hours, and lack of sleep

encountered so far, if doing on a deadline,

I'd be dead, a rush, with others competing,

and not really a time to compete..

Cooperate a possible, but some may

be trying to get graded on it too,

school use and issued laptop,

and all sorts of nasty computer lab

stuff, tricks and treats, the signing

was the trick, and treats,

yet to be encountered,

maybe toilet paper the tech support,

and see how the other half lives...

Ubuntu 18.10 runs OK, so far,

screen rotation issues annoying,

writing and touchscreen sideways

sometimes, sideways to sideways,

install was upside down, might need

to track that down... X11, then X.Org,

now Wayland? display graphics

systems software originally based on

Project Athena? at MIT back in 1986

range, still floating around, and in use,

workstations to PCs, to tablets,

and old software doesn't die,

just gets refactored, i guess...

Reading, now that a little more time,

HP PDF listed and legacy hardware support

was part of the design.   Webcam optional,

and many options, certain corporate buyers

selected options, BluRay, for example, or DL

or less, as needed...

Docking station part numbers listed,

and other details, good to look into,

but maybe expensive to find replacements

these days, will see...  Cost may go down,

but may go up, near end of lifecycle,

like the grill of a Model T Ford...

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

What are the economics of evaluating stuff?

Would they give you free stuff to evaluate it?

Would They then require good reviews?

Positive reviews making them look good,

and you look like a Niel Young corporate

clown?

If doing the research and buying for yourself,

say as a gift, would this have been what you chose?

How would you determine what is good for you?

Did you make a list of the characteristics/

needs that you had?

Size?

Cost?

Capabilities?

Keyboard language(s) for instance,

if doing Hebrew, writing a review

on the Jewish Film Festival near

the MosaicFarmersMarket2018

starting tomorrow, would you have

the keyboard to do that

What about Asian languages?

Were touchscreens a way to go

around that?

Hunt and peck instead of forced to

and English ANSI/ ASCII language

dominance?

Not to mention Arabic,

but if people speak, read, write, those,

might be already familiar with how that

and keyboards work...

Just finding accent agu, grave, etc,

for French,

much less the more umlat (sp?),

UniCode codepages may be the way

to get into it more, will see,

time and interest available...

If the kids are/ were given new iPads

as some old reports of automation in schools,

why would home use be different?

is big better?

easier to determine who has one,

and not slipped out a pocket,

like smaller stuff?

IF you had it to do over again,

say in returns time, what would you do?

How is corporate buying and giving

different than personal use?

is your machine REALID compatible?

Is the QR Code or whatever automated

entry method/ RFID, etc chip

compatible with a point of sale/shit

piece of hardware?

Or is it good enough for poor people,

bad for rich people, like an old brick

phone, compared to BlueTooth headset,

looking cool in the boardroom?

If, 20 years ago, you were evaluating

in a Fortune 500 company and

now stuck with old stuff,

what would that look like?

Recovery and/or slavery?

The gentle good night?

Or hell on wheels / torture/

degradation/ etc,

especially with sniveling millenials

enjoying abusing you?

Look how kewl we are helping

the poor people, when really you

are abusing them instead...

Should human service people be

allowed to do tech?

Or is it mutually exclusive, skill sets,

where if good with people,

way out of date on what is good tech...

Or are you ego based and supposedly

a renaissance man/woman/child/

wunderkind able to do it all,

and be nice, kind, charitable,

a veritable Pretender, sticking

it to the man, whom you really hate

and they can't even tell?

Typing skill may increase, or

maybe not, intentional stenography?

inserting errors intentionally,

or just learning the keyboard in a

creative writing sort of speed writing

like speed dating, not allowed to go

back to change things ,just keep typing

disable the backspace/ delete

and free write, there is the word...

or just punt and make a deadline

word count is one thing and spelling is

hit at another fact checking part of the

mill of word processing, editing and publishing

and writing and creating the minions have

to do the dirty work, backspaced a bit there,

used to correct not speed but accuracy

counts too, in a typing test, but not really

in a thinking test

also the word wrap stuff goes different,

seeing on a big screen is one thing, and another

on a smart phone ,so getting really long winded

on typing and really rather succinct

and brief on the smartphone published

pages, no more, more essay like,

but will see...

Deadline STOP

Hands UP

Cooks/ Chefs stop

BUZZZ
