Introduction/Definition/etc
An every 4 years SailBoat race,
around the world,
started from Vendee, France,
on November 8th...
Body
Original Text
New boat designs since i was
paying much attention
include foils, raising the boat
up beyond planing, and
reaching around 30KnotsPerHour
(35ish Miles Per Hour)
instead of 6 knots or so for
many cruising boats
like traditional monohull
SVDelos2018 for example...
Solo sailing race, around the globe,
taking 75-90+ days depending
upon sailboat design
(some older designs are
racing as well) with currently about
33 entries, starting the last week...
ConVid19ContinuesIn2020
effected and France locked down,
(again?) so not as many even masked
visitors, at the docks, boat race start,
though there is a Virtual race going on
concurrently, eSailing or something,
there are a couple apps associated with
it on, inshore and offshore/ ocean
afaict, downloaded and some WebGL
(or similar VR?) limitation on mobile,
so not tried yet.
Saw some SeaWolves
reports and a few other video,
the tracking AIS (boat location)
shows where they are currently
and a black Hugh Boss seems
to be in the lead, last i knew,
He'd be the first non French to win,
in the 30 or so year history
if that happens...
Several females are entrants,
i think on older designs, but sketchy recall.
One a rather attractive business major
so the PR value of that
and nobody seems to really know
why they are punishing themselves
for this grueling race, in battering
waves, at high speeds, likened
between sailing and flying
(off by a factor of 10 with planes,
but more like soaring,
which i've tried)
Short clips of video of people uploading
and weather guesses with the Pandemic
mentioned as few planes flying so
weather models are inaccurate,
compared to fully tourism/ flying mode
though some monitoring of the race
may fill in some gaps, afaict, my guess,
posted on the YouTube from an older
SeaWolves video... He's a trainer/
and sails, and did some course analysis,
much of which is in southern hemisphere
bordering the AntiArtic in the Southern Ocean,
some around Cape Horn, a wild ride
indeed, some (dis/de)masting and other
rescue stuff have happened and
a few returning challengers,
some new people, and even well
wishes from a Sir (Knighted)
Robin? Knox Johnson? guy
who did the first / fastest solo
round the world (look him up).
Historically, Slocum (sp?) a Canadian,
back in whaling ships days,
before steamers really
caught on, and early sailing,
ran aground with his (second?)
wife? and built a ship/sailing to
return part way, and likely
business collapse besides
knowing and writing (ghosted?)
with a publishing magnet family,
and trying to support himself,
that way, after a rough childhood,
abusive father, and a dream of going
to sea, under sail, several ships
and working his way up the ladder,
as it were...
Noting some odd sailing areas
in the world, Straights, Cape Horn,
panama canal, yet started/ finished
back then,
and other hazards,
weather being
a big one, getting a
(n abandoned project)
boat for free/ or a dollar or so,
fixing it up over the winter
and getting out...
Comparisons with
Sailing La VagaBonde
the family sailing/ cruising catamaran
(cat for short), trimarans,
and other more traditional
monohull designs,
speed seems to be a factor,
for example taking (green kid advocate)
Greta across the Atlantic with
a female champion skipper help/
and family,
the speed seems to matter,
cats can be much faster,
have two hulls, less water to move
and in case one springs a leak,
might stay afloat on the other?
but Riley downplaying dinghies
even Hobie cats (16 foot range)
for a day sail, and recently saw
there is a newish foil design
on ordering wait list
option(s) for about $10k
($3k? down?) weighing in at
about 75 pounds,
rooftop size single hander,
but hardly a live aboard
like SVDelos2018
Tula
GoneWithTheWynns
(finally got out of lockdown in Fiji
and cleaning up abandoned
boat after a year,
aluminum fuel tank repairs
(using JBWeld, WTF? bandaidish),
starting to live back on board...)
and many other YouTube
channels for that alternative lifestyle...
Like bicycling Tour de France
LeMonde (sp?),
Formula One/ Stock Car
Grand Prix
motorcycle MotoGP?
and other racers, commuting
and cruising (RV lifestyles
are very different) but
some of the race stuff seems
to filter down into stock models
eventually, the crash test dummies
of the regular world, like planes
took off after the World War(s)
surplus planes and barnstorming/
crop dusting and other passenger
planes started from excess military
and other race around the world stuff...
These are some of the Lindbergs,
Amelia AeroHeart (sp?) and
others, like flying transAtlantic
or around the world, global
has it's perspective, now with
satellites, and commercial
space travel starting up,
other things imaginable,
but not specified...
Modified Text
What's Missing?
Reality?
Gobs of money?
Real costs of boat,
time, supplies, training,
etc...
Sponsors?
Privacy?
Sponsors or Privacy?
Anonymity?
What Can Be Found?
Video/ press about the race...
What Can Not Be Found?
energy to do things like that...
How To Analyze?
Lenses
Noob
Bathtub duckies?
It floats?
DaySailors
Fast and sleep aboard?
Solo? What's the point?
Fun to talk about but
doing... Nuts...
Insane/CrayCray
and not talking Fish...
Cruisers
Fast?
You mean not racing
with handicaps for who
buys the first drinks at
the bar?
Elderly
Old brittle bones
why even look at stuff
like that?
Oldest racer is early 60's
though...
Dis/Dys
Thymia(s)
seems interesting some days
totally insane other(s)
Graphia?
map looks flat to me,
so the world is too?
Autistic
IDK
moves too much
makes noise
maybe geek out on some part of it...
General Population/Public
WTF?
Trump like 1%ers?
Much less than that,
only a few in the world,
have done stuff like this,
maybe more have been in space
to the moon?
Than completed something like this...
Assumptions
Expensive lifestyle,
yachting, some might call it,
but racing instead, live aboard
part time, not 10+ years
like SVDelos2018 (off by 2-3x?)
and some others...
Time Limits
Seasonal cold some places
on the globe other places
rather warm,
SurvivingTheDullDrums2020
around the equator, just baking
in the heat and sun, afaict,
storms beyond any historical
stuff recently this year, coinciding
with ConVid19ContinuesIn2020
commuting with cars/ planes, etc
maybe changes global climate
change a little, but with stuff
starting up again, maybe a false
start, idk, lockdowns again,
etc...
Book Data
Chapmans was the sailing bible,
sort of, in my (earlier) day(s),
not sure what happened to
(my copy of) it,
big, heavy, expensive, etc...
Newer cat books mentioned
on LaVagaBonde
and some other stuff
to find on foils,
while extremely expensive
think formula one costs?
prices may come down,
bringing foiling possibilities
down to more of the masses,
taking a month plus to cross
the Atlantic down to a week?
endurance and solo options
abound at that, perhaps,
for some (others) over time...
Slocums' book
Chapmans
other sailing bible(s)
to more modern
Cat book
all the way to geeky
really technical stuff...
Composites
Foils
Soaring
HangGliding

pun intended
but watch mercury,
other toxins, etc...
fishing in older postings
possible too, other things
may relate, some of which
are likely above,
and maybe some below...
Conclusion
Summary of experience or similar
Race goes on for a while further,
one ship went back for repairs,
taking days off the lead,
but if fixable and reentries
makes thinking virtual entries
eSailing competition and learning
more accessible...
Discussion
A place for feedback on the page presented
What sailing/ on the water
stuff have you done?
Taken a water taxi?
Cross on a Ferry?
Skippered?
Racing?
Cruising?
Watched America's Cup?
What do you think of Solo Sailing?
Better than mutiny?
Does self steering make it possible?
or just bash about/ heave to?
and flop around the waters until can
go further?
What expenses do you think
there are in things like that?
Are you Crafty?
Work on your own car/ boat/ house?
Does that make it affordable,
enough?
