WretchesAndJabberersMovie2011
Introduction/Definition/etc
Disability movie related to Autism Month
premiered in Georgetown AMC over the weekend,
and well, you can't see it for a while, it will be on some
cable channel I don't have, and eventually on DVD,
but here is some info about my impressions of it,
for the general public (and others)...
20110423 Addendum: April 23, 2011 Two places (both AMC) showing TODAY
Gaithersburg, MD & Columbia MD. See WretchesAndJabberers.org
for details on that and one in Fairfax, VA on MAY 12, 2011.
I still want the DVD, as watching in theatres, and you can't pause
"STOP THE WORLD" ;-/

Body
Heard about an Autism movie premiere from a couple of sources,
and well, here is a little bit about what I saw and experienced...
Got lost, thought it was at the Foundery theatre in Georgetown,
but look it up online while out, and well, it was around the block...
Parking a hassle, some meters up by Georgetown shops,
but lucked out and found one further that was two hour,
non pay... And parking enforcement was wandering nearby...
Get to theatre, late, very tired from previous evening and
day's activities, missed Temple Grandin at the Accessibility
Summit (see 4WheelsBad2WheelsGood3WheelsMaybe
ranting) but went to try to crash the party, just a day early,
trying to get to McLean Bible Church by 9 am FRIDAY,
and well, it wasn't starting until 3 pm or 5 pm as the
info desk on third floor said, wandering around some
building that is about the size of a small college campus,
and heard later it was a NSF (National Science Foundation)
building previously, and they seem to have done some improvements,
checking online maps.google.com a large parking structure,
and new construction (Jill's Place?) next door,
otherwise out in the back of Wolf Trap, on the highway,
off the Dulles Access Road (and Tysons is getting Rail,
and is all torn up, even when traffic was bad before...)
Anyways, nice enough people at the church talked with
one facilities type guy about the banner and two wheeled
transportation and the state of the world (did we get to that)
anyways he was worried about the banner, and well
I said disabled people are eccentric anyway,
and finding the right entrance was important,
then trying to find within the big buliding???
No elevator in the double level garage next to it,
so park in a good place, and well not many cars
there when I was visiting/ crashing...
A fair amount of security people, never seen before
at a church, and mostly happy people (annoying to
this disabled person, as a grouch) but that's not their issue,
it's mine...
Kid daycare, and told one kid wandering my way,
to go the other way, he cutely said "OK" to this odd person...
Well within earshot of the one of many info desks,
and others around...
Elevators in the building, and finding the right floor,
large auditorium and nobody milling around the
atriums/ lobbies but had many tables out, empty tables,
so something wasn't right... Besides me...
Anyways x2, decided to go home and try some sleep,
but that didn't work either, other stuff later that night,
and well, didn't make it up early enough Saturday to
try to see Temple speak in person... Hollywood renditions
of disabled don't do much for me, entertaining, but
I'm more non fiction, than portrayals (aka betrayals),
even if good subject matter, Temple seems to care about the animals,
almost PETA like? but maybe people think disabled
NTs (NeuroTypicals aka average non disabled/ non autistics)
must think we are animals, don't think like them and must
be sub human, animal like, and sometimes I'm guilty of that
bias too... And I may be one of them...
So my consolation prize for not seeing Temple in person,
when she was in town, hobnobbing with the wealthy,
conference goers, or whomever, the few, the proud,
the wealthy, the Marines, whatever,
[ this machine is trashing my sentences/ paragraphs
and really really annoying,
non sequitor enough without dropping my creative rants,
damn machine...
Mouse dead on Natty Norwall or similar beta Ubuntu
and well between the two I'm not getting to write
clearly and hit the save button, as the mouse went out..

Maybe what it's like being autistic, like the characters in the movie,
input/ output channels messed up and people assume you're dumb/
stupid/ unintelligent/ etc...
Several main characters, with a personal assistants each,
Tracy? the Homeless guy and autistic, advocate, with personal support person,
and budget cuts, going to see state Senator and traveling internationally,
wondering where the money came from for all this, not only the movie,
the trip and all else, high budget makes me worry about Aut$peaks
influences, national premieres and people flying in, means big
budget, maybe not HollyWood big, but bigger than most disabled
stuff, AFAICT. Pharma not involved that I can see, nobody
saying nice things about meds, so whom?
Nice that it was a documentary instead of actors trying to play
disabled, but I still see the normal (NT) underneath,
like the mask is removed, or the person behind the curtain,
tah dah,
Couple of guys from Green Mountain area of Vermont go to
India Buddhist temple, meet monks, (and don't like taking shoes
off, the sensation of some autistics is probably like fingernails
on the chalkboards to NT's, and others probably think we are just
being difficult and/or fussy. For some it's fluorescent light bulbs,
and with all the Compact Fluorescent and green initiatives, it doesn't
realize some are at a frequency that it bothers, really really annoys
people, so events like Autreat2010PoorPitifulMeAndTheTreatmentsIRantOn
and others modify with real natural light, low noise, using sign language applause
instead of loud clapping NTs do, and drives others up the wall...
Like scented perfumes, and others with chemical sensitivities,
most are probably allergic to pollen, dust, bee stings,
but some are peanut, deathly allergic, and others to
some providers (humph)
And near the end a cute Finnish girl, the youngest,
Swede like among the old bald fat guys, though Larry
is amusing artist, painter, taken from family institutionalized,
still lives at home with mom, get the sister and others on the set
(vague reference to poor taste broadcast journalism/ aka NEWS)
and well this was a tear jerker, silent but deadly, in that is snuck
up on you, and talking with the director, I didn't have the heart to say
it, but later with an Autism Society program person, said it outloud
and probably within ear shot of the film's director...
Sappy, but I liked it. Short review. Go see it.
Better yet get it on DVD (when available) and see it with some
people who live the life, and get personal about what it means to
have difficulty communicating, relating, and well I don't get it all,
but sitting behind a keyboard, I was seeing your average computer
geeks, texting at an outside restaurant cafe, and a little of the deaf
community squawks and noises, that must bring attention,
sounds a little like cries for help, and well with the noises
that Auties are bothered by, drums at temple in this one,
and other places, should be able to understand, but doesn't
mean someone has to remain silent, just considerate,
far more than I usually am ranting about stuff here,
but well, you can turn this web browser off, take a break,
and not have to worry about it while others live this life
full time, have all their lives and will for the rest of it,
and well, maybe films like this give a view of what others
see as the connection, what some can't say, others type
and some have very slow baud rate describing,
hunt and peck type keyboarding, steadied elbow
from personal assistant, and well, we don't all travel
internationally, but we might be able to relate to some
of it, funny sections on the foods, after a while you just laugh,
but probably just starving, can't eat the stuff that moves,
can't find Budweiser, and there is not Bud Lite alternative,
the bright lights/ big city of a lit up Japanese
(think NY Time's Square ^100th) and you wonder
what guys do to survive, when used to cooking pancakes
at home, real maple syrup and well, just getting out of our shells...
One guy wants to move to Finland, probably likes the girl...
I was thinking the two guys would be good roommates,
but not sure how the girl is going to fit into that picture...
The young Japanese author of many books,
Flight of the Bumble Bee music playing as theme song
as he hops around the house until sitting to write and
work/ do school/ whatever, and meeting others like them
finally from around the globe, the Indian kid,
(India, not American Indian)
and all the personal assistants/ case workers/ etc
and it must have been quite an entourage filming,
the director mentioned the people were OK in Japan,
following the earthquake, explained the flu epidemic
and the masks on film, but what of the friends of friends?
Oh, and this is a spoiler, need to add that up top...
A few days later, still processing the event/ movie,
impressions and maybe not able to let it go, ever...
But don't real enough to give a good well written review,
just see it... And try to see it with people who are like that,
and the audience is almost like Rocky Horror Picture Show,
participation from the audience...
Sometimes kid like, sometimes, way beyond us,
relating in different ways... Most of the film alludes to stuff,
like cartoons do with kids, funny for them, and another channel/
wavelength for others, stories double or triple or more told,
watching what they do, how they say it, and it was intense,
maybe that was the effect she was going for, and
well guess she got it... Good luck and hope the cable industry
gives you the channel they are playing your movie on,
as most probably don't have it... On Demand or something...

- spell checked for easier reading
- a couple of words dropped, added in,
- minor editing for the masses, and upon my review
- must have been very tired when I wrote it,
- cause it's drifting/ flighty at best
- tangential streams of words, not as poetic as the characters
in the movie, just odd, and off base...
