3DPrinter2012

Introduction/Definition/etc

3D printing is extruding plastic (ABS, PLA, PLE, or aluminum) in 3 Dimensions

by computer control, to print real world objects,  from a computer 3D files

like downloaded from ThingieVerse.com , ShapeWays.com , custom designs,

or SD type memory card.

Computerized Manufacturing like CNC (Computer Numerical Control)

have been around for a long time, but having a desktop and affordable

one like Makerbot  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MakerBot_Industries )

may revolutionize the industry...

Like a LaserPrinter, when they first came out, they are expensive,

in the $1000 range to buy a low end model, but makers/ hackers

have got the price down by Open Hardware, bulk ordering,

assembling yourself, and other innovative means...

So at a target price of $400, I decided to try to build one,

and was going to wait until it was working to write more about it,

but I got geeky ( GeekingOutWithRaspberryPi2012

BioLogicReeCharge2012  so decided to write about it earlier ;-)

Body

Threaded rod, smooth rod, cut to size,

and you build a 3 D frame with "vitamins" for the metal non printed

parts (rods, bolts, washers, linear bushings, bearings,

add NEMA-17 motors, and custom printed parts and you

have a RepRap.org , or at least the parts, and some magic

is required to put it together, the instructions are useless to me,

and so many changes have been made to the design, it requires

change management (or ECOs Engineering Change Order's)

to determine what is going on systemically, but I'm a nOOb at this,

so I guess go with the group.

Some things can be made, many are bought,

supplies are going to be in the $50/ spool of plastic filament

and it will require all sorts of special parts to get going well.

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

Will see, when done, and working,

Probably shouldn't have written about it until it was working,

I get enough crap from others about new and interesting ideas already...
