Brief description of how people have problems in schools
these days...
Body
So I'm trying to learn how to Weld,
for bicycle frames and a project with motorcycle,
to build a trailer that will be luggage (have you seen
how much I normally carry, papers, etc)
but will turn around and be able to tow the motorcycle
on, plus other features, so it needs to be light,
and since transportation is involved, exceedingly safe,
so try learning how to weld from others, instead of self
taught, as need to use someone else's facilities
(see Fabrication (Fab) Lab in Catonsville Community College
(Baltimore Suburb)
for a template, take a lab class, and have open lab
privileges, more on this locally, in a moment)
So I do the research, call around and ask around,
and finally go out to the only place that would be
In State tuition, apply for Admission, get in,
and get Wait Listed at number 6, 11 and several 2s
for actually welding instead of miscellaneous
related stuff, drafting, or auto shop, etc...
Waiting weeks, pay tuition, another long process,
learning small distant campus, bookstore, library,
policy and procedures (slightly), etc
Requested tools and supplies list,
waiting on the email of that promised,
don't receive for several days, go back out,
rushed and walk in to lab (safety not yet explained,
goggles, clothes, etc requirements)
A Meeting is going on, but looks like some people
hanging around an SUV, (It's Auto Shop, hard to tell)
say I was lied to, half jokingly, woman who said
she would send, gives me information in the office,
someone sharing the office says I'm in the way,
I'm wide with stuff, books checked out, textbook
was in the library, various rude things,
and the conversation deteriorates,
I think he should be fired for keeping people out,
seems like discrimination, he says (out of sequence,
quick description) the usual excuses, money,
and all suggestions were already considered,
but not done, I said...
It goes on like that for a while, my stuff is
searched, and treated like trash,
perhaps it's the way people in plants are treated,
like a thief, maybe property is all
the owner's not the workers/ laborers...
It was said it's like a plant,
where everything personal is left in the lockers,
but not yet read the lab rules..
I'm told I'm not suitable, not sure how to parse that,
but not really good.
I'm asked if I'm sick, "we all are"
Can't be sick here or similar...
I've called Him God, as in Speak to God Personally,
instead of the carefully crafted Email with choice
words, instead it's interactive and I've got a temper
about people being treated this way
I've got a BIS, coming back to a community college
where I was a Dean's List and Honors in a few substance
abuse classes (never finished certification, car died
on commutes across county, etc)
I was also an Engineering Student, unsuccessful,
as got into Poli Sci and caught between a large technical
school and a small liberal arts school that closed, after
my first year there, talk about object of politics,
and lightning rod for other's problems...
Long story short, he thinks I threatened him,
I had a complaint about not getting what I needed,
as purchasing and planning purchases for supplies,
books, etc when starting back is a chore,
in so many various ways,
and it feels as if God Doesn't Like Me,
God in this case being an Assistant Dean,
who wants a Building,
and well, there is need, but not my problem
besides I can't get a class, or few classes I need,
I suggest military help, and Well the Fab Lab concept,
private, public partnership of people in welding and auto,
so there is community benefit and not a private garage
funded with public money for RedNecks (I mean it Respectfully)
as in Jeff Foxworthy, and the Joys of Geekery),
but at the same time, feeling put upon to solve organizational
problems and funding problems that really aren't my role,
just trying to get in a class when they are underfunded,
and now state agency, not independent like when I went decade or more ago,
so beaurocracy (spelling, as usual) abounds, small so personalities and Egos are bigger
than the accomplishments, and one of the only games in the area
(Welding is not a lost art, it's Rare in Classes, more a Trade,
some engineers might pick it up on their own, but I'm being
careful, and trying to be safer...)
So when students in Community Colleges,
High Schools and those with disabilities have problems,
here are some reasons,
Funding: can't pay for stuff, the processes for benefits and limited
financial resources, people are at the end of their ropes, so to speak...
Financial downturn and nobody is doing well, tempers flare...
Organizational: Hierarchical and not up to the common standards,
Harley Davidson Plant in York, PA, uses a system of teams,
where improvements are implemented fairly quickly,
though seemed quite hierarchical as well...
Disability: Giving a disabled, say dyslexic, depressed, some autistic
characteristics a pile of paperwork saying Professionals (read those
that fucked us consumers over of Consumer Driven Monies we advocated
for and got) have to say what we need, a current diagnosis (read the Medicare
Card from Social Security and Feds doesn't count? WTF?
History so old, that they say it's not current, and we need a Doctor's
Note to Go To Class, not to Stay Out Of Class, and you have
discrimination and obstacles so enormous, even many parents,
healthy people, non disabled can't figure out...
Add to that virtual worlds, BlackBoard and Oracle, and PeopleSoft,
and other Corporate entities, instead of Open Source (and Free)
Moodle, MySQL, and other systems, you are in a Human Resources
System, looking like an employee instead of a Student, a Hodge Podge
mash up of Technology, likely a contracting nightmare for the taxpayers,
and not customizable, as VCCS is across all the Community Colleges in the State,
when the State Took Over, and not wonder there are Vice Presidential Hearings
of Crises...
Conclusion
Summary of experience or similar
Nobody can be reasonably expected to succeed in this environment...
