So, being a geek, I decided to go to an event, similar to other events I've been to over the last 5+ years (read RobotFest.com & Electronica ), but this one was in a high school, and not being able to agree to the volunteer contract, decided to try the media angle, as I agreed to write about the experience, so here is some of it...

Might want to view: Harvard educated but schizophrenic David Oaks who ran MindFreedom.org on DiversiTV Program around 2008 where they describe troubled and lost kids in foster care, and elsewhere as our kids, similar to it takes a village, but awkward IMO with interviewer a clinician, his dad a psychiatrist and mandatory reporting noting he wouldn't recommend to his family going into the state systems... Being disabled, and carrying too much stuff, I decided to ignore that "rule", see that decision further along in this drivel...
Bike Valet existed, mid campus, without the bus ride requirements. Specific types of (meat motor only) bikes not determined...

Rules
Upon hearing I was declared a VIP (really?), and gained free admission,($20 equivalent?) I asked about written media rules, and found none. Also, I didn't see a parking pass, which rumor had it was required closeby. or have to go to satellite parking area and bus over to the event sites, risking losing the vehicle/ damage/ etc...
Social rules for Geeks were a mystery, watching The Big Bang Theory, will not help establish those canonical rules, nor were the posted, facility/school behavior expectations, event rules, say on a bulletin board upon entry, perhaps that was on the online registration process, when buying a ticket online by credit card...
The handout didn't have anything, and I was not required to sign anything to enter the site(s). YMMV
Generally at tech type events, I ask permission to photograph and video tape people, stating I do not wish to be recorded and give a copy of the raw digital footage, so to speak, to the host organization, possibly with some restrictions, such as removing images of myself, including up nose shots, of starting a wearable camera and having my face/ identity recorded always by mistake.

Conflict
Saw some people with wearable cameras on their faces, and tried to avoid them,
until one previously unknown walked up to me, injected himself in the conversation,
and he didn't really realize, I didn't want to be recorded/ transmitted (think eCig exceptions),
nor ask either of the others talking, even after I mentioned it, multiple times, and leave me alone x N.
Attitude, and stated, was that he had the right, because I used the biggest bully on the block product
(see annoyances elsewhere), I said he didn't have that right, and an argument ensued...
It escalated badly, several others appeared likely behind me to witness/ lurk it, gang up on me,
verbally abuse me, for which one may have been "fired", my "I would commit if I had to be here",
and I'm an old person or similar and I may have been the equivalent of suspended and/or
expelled from the grounds...
Some comments on their (de)escalation procedures needing revamping...
TBD when any email, notification arrives, also possible as leverage to force me to write a good / positive / indifferent review... /conspiracy theory#1...Infinity
Given I didn't see/hear/ know the $Authorities, nor recognize/know who was ordering me to leave,
even with riddle like guessing game probing of who I thought it was,

I basically tried getting clarification, made assertions about whom? and/or ignored it until too annoyed,
tired and worried about being towed to stay, (despite another unknown person saying it was taken care of)
and packed up and left early, frustrated and angry...

Determining Good Person v Bad Person, indifferent, scientific, one might want to consider
it's not simplistically (read age differences?), binary, nor tertiary, good, bad, but grey scale, with shades,
people are, imho, parts of both/ all...
with pluses and minuses, as they are not god

Actually, morals are kind of orthogonal to science, IMNSHO...

Unfortunately, I've had the feeling of being told/ implied I'm less than, questioned incessantly,
subjected to infinite scrutiny, suspicion, bag search, etc, sometimes in that part of jurisdiction,
the social equivalent of classism/ insular/ separatist (i.e. Not! Urban) communities?

Noise/Quiet/SafeArea
IIRC, No real quiet time/ place to get away from people and/or sit down.
Hallway had benches like but around lunchtime was rather busy,
quiet time was before the event, when allowed in early,
filming/ recording somewhat, and then became busy,
likely to capacity, and started asking people to leave,
low/ no paying customers first, (moi included?).
One kid meltdown likely in another building, as I was looking for the door
to the auditorium, but locked door, and walked to volunteer staff area,
mumbling to myself only apparently about want directions in a school, ask a kid...
Hoping to be funny, but likely not matching my tired and conflicted mood...
Basically, a place to find help, by yourself, or in need of assistance, not criticism...

Presentations
Missed all of them, and when asked, said something like I'm more lab than lecture person, seems like Charlie Brown's blah blah blah instead, but my attitude might have been fading by then, I didn't read the program ahead of time, pause to think/calm, nor sort out what was where by name to make it to the other building on any sort of schedule.
White CNC routed custom made pointers, literally, and likely volunteer staff noted SignPosts, were available pointing towards locations of older person intellectualized category named events. Probably names match in the event program graph/ map, IDK, didn't pause/ read to check...
More Iconized Graphical map might help, names not always meaningful to little ones, or initiates/ noobs...
Maybe video/ streaming of the presenter(s) only and a log of the presentations for time shifting, publicity, etc?
realizing some speakers/ presenters don't want to actually be seen, man/woman/robot behind the curtain style...

Might require significant editing to keep kids out of the background, one technique might be for a booth that wearable and textiles were involved but children behind the people who verbally agreed, to do stills, and keep the voice, slideshow mode like...
Other videos might want to take out the background audio (< silence or replace with interesting but not too distracting transgenerational music) and only keep a still, fish eye at that for table signs, cards, flyers, etc.

(Disclosure: I was in an earlier 3D build group (#3?) with NoVARRG, (RepRap.org Group) hosted at NoVA-Labs over a year previous, working on an incomplete (still hoping to finish/create with another and thereby build an Arlington based hackerspace..., 3DPrinter doesn't travel well on a bicycle...) but haven't officially joined, become a full member, at the get a key level (involves $100/month), but visit fairly frequently (read monthly?), as it currently hosts something else...) Sparks with one of the members/ organizers/ but generally get along, though not always well... Cutting and grinding smooth and threaded rod, was one of my first activities with the bulk purchase and intellectual power of a build Group....
Rumor has it, they are moving when new MetroRail comes in, likely this summer, due to building rebuild/gentrification (if still called that in suburbia)...
No, I don't want to be "found" there either...

When some other early conflicts surfaced my teen attitude like short reactionary review of the event was "School Sucks", well, not the P.C. version...
As in why would kids go to school on a weekend and do this?
Some might need to be encouraged to go to such an event,

get away from Quality Time with 'Rents/ siblings/ airing out,
likely some are doing service learning hours,
so homework like approaching midterms?,
and others might want to just learn, IDK, I didn't talk directly to too many kids,
as not set up as a welding basics (WeldingBasics2013 ) or any other table, which would have required advanced logistical planning with the organizers/sponsors/ social skills and contacts I mostly don't possess...
OK, rethink about the "School Sucks" answer that doesn't get me kicked out of school and/or school like equivalent... IFF I were a student, there...
Someone asked how was it?
I said good, they said remember that, but later problems noted above in conflict section which changed the take away feeling somewhat...
Playing to the reviewers seems to be like studying to the test, necessary sometimes, but not the point...
So how to remedy?

Almost requires a different protocol than normal school authoritarian atmosphere, so wondering if something other than the <normal> school site might be possible next year, like a satellite/ local community college campus? upgrading to higher ed? and more neutral territory/ turf?
Indoor space nice, so a county park might not have enough power outlets, parking ,etc for this type of event, and then it might rain...
Drones blown away in a storm, plus Electro_mel_tronics usually don't like rain...
Maybe testing a submarine robot, OK, (find Alaska link) but 3D printing under a rain storm?
Change of venue possible?
Not such authoritarian power structure, plus insular environment, but they are a little protective,
they are after all parents with kids and I'm an outsider, wearing camo safety riding gear,
and acting weird, at least to them, wearing a wearable video camera pair,
and writing about them, so who wouldn't be?
Well, also the two suicides, working to the rule labor disputes,
and other interpersonal issues going on....
But that is life/ school/ community...
It's better to talk about it than do it, (tm) in the suicide/ self harm realm,
the over critical high expectations, low support, high pressure environment to succeed,
is a little much even for a visitor, and I said so, out loud. and confronted being abused by
an unknown/ power hungry/ control freak, such as myself...
I'm of the sixties generation where we talked about feelings, even strong feelings,
but in today's environment, even talking about it in a school setting gets one
in trouble/ medicated/ treated/ shunned/ etc...
So a significant power overhaul?
Start / continue to grow support groups?
And/or Spring Break type escapes?
I missed mine this year, and am feeling it already...
