SubUrbanMade2015

Introduction/Definition/etc

Brief description to follow on with GeeksRule2014 event, part Deux....

Body

PreEventAngst

Had a difficult time deciding to go, and/or writing up the event, I did not go in as media, paid my way, and under no obligation, financially to write up the event, as last time was free admission for writing, and bought my own t shirt, food, etc...

Conflicts

For the impartiality, as stated previously I have a relationship with NoVALabs, one of the founders/ sponsors of the event, but none, and probably with Maker community, as I'm old school and more Hacker, in a good sense, the Make magazine people owning everything including our image(s), much less Google and others, was a problem with signing in online for the event, even to save half or a few bucks at the door.  At $20 admission for a morning, or full day, if you can take the noise, activity levels, not burn out, standing up, no seats except a few benches in the school, cafeteria / gym used for events, and age groups, activities areas, some low brick type walls useful for sitting, but outside the High School, likely Middle School too, but didn't spend much time there...

OverViews

The Event Grew, a few other things noticed this year, the second running, while the possibly competing and free for attendees, WarthogsRUs2015 , starting a year or so previous to this particular MiniMakerFaire (RobotFest been around longer, but got MiniMakerFaire status later), has a little different audience, perhaps, private school, public school, and how much hands on technology v. tables and just talking, plus cost differentials.  It was about a $50 day for me (sale of $10 old last year t-shirt, and/or $15 new current year), plus bicycling out there, the whole way, I may have had an option of the new Silver Line and buses at additional WMATA cost, the move from shopping mall to public transit parking waypoints, noted, a free shuttle bus likely, the big money in doing stuff like that, much less renting the school, like SAT's the night / day previously, a sign still up, limiting technology for test monitoring, no cell phones, etc, while the event qrcode (machine readable URLs with scanning app) was posted up while I waited an hour plus for the event to begin.  You see my sleep was a little off, the nervousness of being back at a traumatic location, last year''s attempted ejection/expulsion, plus confronted with Google Glass by someone, likely friendly, just not me, and well, with a little more experience under my belt, and probably more physical weight as I aged and spent more time loafing/ couch surfing and in sedentary activities, but ramped up bicycling earlier in the season...

Mainstream media said a few things before, Gazzette/Connection type local papers and Make (tm) articles or such, touting their accessibility by profiling all the disabled booths only, and it might have been a little more friendly than last year, but also a little more institutional discrimination or such, the wait, I was offered to just go in, perhaps because of knowing some event organizers over the years, perhaps to get me out of the way, sitting on a bench, which was moved inside the line, as they setup, upon first entry, I had to eat something, vending machines were available, and likely use the bathroom. exhausted from a 15+ mile bike ride followed by a hilly, heartbreak hill type local Reston trail system, luckily found a little sign off the W&OD trail near Sunrise Valley?, worried about parking, and security, decided to huff and puff aka pedal out there, not bad, early, saw rabbits on the trail as usual in the quiet early morning hours, leaving predawn, before PhoenixBikes.com would have started and likely before anyone else might have tagged along from the local PreTeenPatience2015 type neighborhood, even if I could figure out the route, obtain parental supervision(s), lead a group ride, etc, the kids and parents could have taken buses, and arrived fresher, more presentable, than a baggy old biker, likely a little smelly too,  but that is usual, as school is not a fashion show for me, at this age, embarrassing young people is part of the perks of getting to a ripe old age, the health and other issues, not so much...

Sick

Perhaps it was the miles biking, and/or the yogurt cup and two Krazy Kiwi plus one apple juice cans of VeryFine juice, maybe not the best combination acid in juice and milk based yogurt products (there was a soy option available too), a little glass of orange juice with cereal would be traditional American fare foods, but thinking a food truck was there early for setup, a guy in a weird jacket, later determined chef's Doug's food truck or similar, with wraps, could have started cooking early with breakfast wraps, and later got several different types after the pork bbq sold out two people in line before me, signalling a  mini melt down partially for show, partially for expression, walking off in a loud huff to another big line in the cold, not around snow storm perhaps not happening this year, to worry about, but wearing shorts, likely I was chilled to say the least, worrying a little about hypothermia, and had EMT hanging around me, waiting for food, or observing/loitering, while at the one food truck....

Safety

Fire Marshall did an early walk through, for safety, we had maybe 2000-3000 people, I think someone said it was 2000 registered, a lot, not sure the amount of regular students in the one school, add another school, the middle school, next door also with people providing events/ tables, volunteers and some outside activities, looked like paper rocket launching cancelled due to wind (BaltimoreNode did that at RobotFest a couple years, home run was losing a rocket on the National Electronics Museum roof) and have busy crowded place, and I found a quiet area, where bicycles were stored overnight, to eat and chill out, sitting down, I later found the smart family went inside, I plopped down in the hallway by the door, remembering not to sit in high schools, but forgot, perhaps kids spit, sneeze or other health issues, you see I was getting the nursery school equivalent of day care germs, imported/ exported from the SubUrbs...  That's without the Reston version of Ebola, I learned a little about why they are so scared at times after ECT2014 in the goose and duck filled city dock Lake Anne ecosystem....

HiViz vested people were probably safety type event officers, besides the police presence out on the road, entrance and likely walking and driving around too...

Tables and Such

So, more of the same, nothing really special, as I recall, all the booths/tables were somehow special and kids and projects are supposed to be, but over time, getting a little boring, already, but that is likely the reviewer, attendee as most writing/ drivel is that way, over time...

A toilet bowl game station, in the high school cafeteria type area, I think I had a Potty Training type joke I don't recall, oh, praying to the porcelain game gods, perhaps

A Kiosk type multi-station arcade built off of an OorASomething platform, I don't know, open, and a name I'd have to check handouts...

They were networked and seeing the Raspberry Pi like sized cards visible on each of the hexagonal type corner stations form a central pole type arrangement...

Found RetroPie distro available for RPi2, which may make it easier, but have yet to get an old hand me down game controller going with it...  Not having a lot of gaming and console experience, not getting past the configure buttons setup part, so stay tuned, for more bat station stuff, possibly later...

Flight Sim

Flight Simulator, something I was tracking and wanted for a local road show type tour, welding wheels to it, until I saw the size, might be too big and heavy for bicycling it as a trailer for 15-20+ miles one way...  X-Plane is not open source, the OS and hardware not as I would prefer, but uses a different model of aerodynamics and seemed to work, if crowd pleasing was the goal, long lines and lots of interest, having played with Silicon Graphics IRIS demo software back in the day, plus M$ Flight Simulator, and actually flying a little with a soaring instructor and later learning IFR instructor with club planes plus hang gliding at Kitty Hawk Kites in Outer Banks, NC, it was interesting to see how their project I tried being a part of but could not get there enough to do anything that they considering counting, has changed.  The chair and adjustability was one key design feature...  Stepping into the race car type space frame instead of accessible doors another, but I digress...

CAP

Civilian Air Patrol, seeing a few in military fatigues, including a child/ teen/preteen, was startling, while many may be defence contractors kids, and sponsors likely beltway bandits as well, outright uniforms were startling, but the dress code with geeks was always interesting, the school not requiring uniforms like say a DC Charter School or Private Schools.

Dress Code/ Got Rope?

Besides the above CAP uniforms, one young lady was wearing a Got Rope? black t shirt, and I was astonished at first, later approaching her at a booth and asking if she climbed, she said she did, and I suggested, in as PC/pseudoClinical a way a geek can, that someone might buy her an event t shirt, as with mid terms, SATs, Columbine anniversary, and other suicidal type ideations teens and other might have, the last few I left out and implied, it might be better to wear something else, entirely hippocritical, on my part, but such as it was, given the history of loosing teens, in that jurisdiction and elsewhere...

Lunch Break

Walking by from Middle School area towards the High School main event, first truck was an empty line chicken place, but I wanted BBQ, only to wait in the long line, try to be semisocial and have it erased from the white board just two people in front of me, they were out, and likely not making more that day, chicken bbq would not do for me, for some reason...

No Beef

Do they have two Indian principals?  Or Group Norms?  Did the locals already know?

Maybe the event organizers were vegan and allowed chicken and pork, but not beef, or just the cost of it?  IDK, but an investigative brat might figure it out, or already know...  "Where's the Beef?" commercials reminiscing for the older set...

Afternoon Events

Time line and structure a little off here, of the tour timing, but the general flow of it...

Middle School Walk Thru

A quick walk thru of the Middle School, to see what was up there, and a neat MakerSpace sign made out of circuit boards, small tickertape type LED/LCD displays and assorted stuff, a camera crew nearby, and I had to step back, meantime a kid, perhaps doing booth duty nearby and I wanted to photograph / video the board, instead of just my foods, thinking could I /they name all the parts, what is it, does and what it is from?  Difficult but a challenge, meanwhile an adult asks me if they can take my picture?  I say thanks for asking, but No, I don't like that, and it seems to start to be a problem, and argument, he thinks he has the right, I think Not, and it's last year all over again...

Take Apart

In the big hallway area, kids and maybe some adults taking apart machines, seeing how they worked, VCRs, printers, Computers, etc, I was surprised how few had seen inside and the natural inquisitiveness of how things work and don't with PreTeenPatience2015  and basically every kid type event I go to...  It's almost like there are Gremlins in the things, and at an older age, learning to solder, like RobotFest.com classes do, the smoke goes back in the device sometimes too, as you may have heard, there is limited smoke in any electronics, once released, likely doesn't work anymore...

Toxicity with old lead based solder, sharpness of parts, tools, manual dexterity required given many kids use keyboards, not tools, and possible palsy, hand eye fine coordination and disability issues likely, interruptions during electronics surgery and hospital and other issues in creating events like this...

Chaos Machine

Busy as usual, marbles going through lots of Rube Goldberg meets Escher type mechanizations, follow the marble, see if you can see/ figure out where it will go, type of stuff, not that much different from the AARP healthcare/ Geico type commercials running, though those are likely shorter and more complex movements, it was too busy and I didn't spend much time there, though always a good draw/ anchor activity...

WestField Robotics

A student robots team, with handouts, and while rushing thru, too busy to talk, to get back before lecture,  picked up some illiterature like a Con[ference]Bot | Drone including an oval Euro type sticker from the table, later hearing it was for sale, asking the information desk about it after the lectures, and returning it to an empty sticker table, nobody may have noticed the return, whatever, like a farmers market, perhaps requiring labelling those things for sale would help, and me not avoiding people getting literature, reminders and names of places with links, reference, etc, might be a better process...

Also, could QRCode all the tables?  Print a placard for each table making it easier to place each, and do the standard, where is what table/booth/activity, as the numbers of tables increase placing all of them could be a problem, setup, and lost kid/adult and maybe finding everyone and thing is easier.  Last years simulation possibilities, learning object oriented programming and gaming or simulation of flow of the tables could be a game plan for the parents, we are going to these booths/tables and then that one, and reduce the walk around, or roll around, the H.S. had a mom with wheelchair and she presented, but I was too tired after three lectures to stay, feeling bad for the lack of support, but talking mods to chairs, and walkers for multiple sclerosis or similar, the Dean Kamen of Segway and FIRST Robotics fame designed iBot being bought by Johnson and Johnson and priced out of most people's range, an open hardware version, might be actually helpful instead of ego, marketing and money based Care...

Lectures

Being rather tired. approaching sick (see above), I caved on my usual, "I do Lab, not lecture" stance, and sat in the Middle School, steps as seats type auditorium for two to three lectures.

The lectures were home video quality (they had a tripod!) recorded at least the presenter(s) in view and I later talked to someone who missed lectures, they might follow up that way...  Video archives over the years suggested.  Conference proceedings to be published to registered attendees, followup by email, etc possibilities exist to make it more academic and professional, instead of just marketing...

A young kid in front of me was fascinated/ bored with the lecturing adult talk and kept focusing on either me or my bike helmet, so as minor league entertainment I turned on the headlight pointed close by to the floor, to help with day care, the mom later smiling or something having her hands full, to say the least...

CNC Wallets

A local turned Stanford business student took a machining CNC type course and ended up designing and build a KickStarter business around a small wallet that would not hurt your back, surprisingly like large breasts, back pain relates to how much you are carrying in your back pocket(s) too, baby/boo/bro got bad back too...  A slide in the cards type rail with clip (doesn't do it justice), and it is smaller and as a fork type thing perhaps stronger, I might go bigger and provide some shielding for RFID and other nosey people trying to get passport, credit card/ smart card information by the mere swiping of your butt/ purse/ bags, type of white collar techie pick pocketing...

The industry, the distinction between ma and pop small, we have a few CNC machines businesses and the very large scale, we do stuff on time and professionally was important for those looking to outsource, the small expensive machines are difficult to learn to use, though not impossible, as even a business major at Stanford could do it (insert a CalTech / Harvard/MIT joke here, having toured a few of those, applied to one, it's a little personal too, imnsho) all joking and in good fun, I hope, Audacity or Not...

I asked if there were prerequisites to the CNC class, he said no, but the test/ baseline type thing was identifying a set of bits and tools, what they were called, and what they did, interesting...

Drones

One on Drones, asking how many drones the presenter, DCDUG founder/ President had, about 60 he has built, and mostly sold on eBay or similar, the slides would be good to link to here, perhaps like the MultiRotor 101 class, new and improved, but with a few pictures and interactive, guess what this picture is?  I guessed Johnson Center of GMU, having spent some time there back in the day, it was a trailer park during construction back in the early 1990's, rapid growth outpacing the construction time frames....

Bamboo Bikes

Mostly about Clinton's Global Initiative, all the lectures were more about business and less technical than I would have liked, but it could have easily gone over my head too...  Consider adults with kids, and you can really have a time keeping all of them interested and active at the same time.  Like Disney and other animation companies, interleaving multiple levels into a lecture would be a challenge, storyline applicable to both older and younger, and that is really an art, not a science, we usually see STEM, not STEAM...  Yep, I missed going in the room with video projects in the Middle School area.  Maybe young reporters could document, and use a No Photo Badge as a reasonable accommodation for those who do not want to be on camera, QRCode the badge, RFID it like black cons (DEFCon, DamageCon, whatever)  and you can possibly contact all those in full frame, proximity and get permission electronically,  Instead of facial tag, email tag each person, and automagically strip out data upon  the editing, approval and publishing process...

I asked if there was a way of dealing with the irregularities of bamboo, presenter's response was that the supplier was good at uniformity...

Info Table / Desk

Same security vested guy following me/ watching over me/   as early admission times...

Talk about the sticker/ return / pricing stuff, and pickup a Make Magazine for free, $5-10 value, larger magazine format (8x10inch+) from what I was used to, back in RobotFest.com silent auction days/ years before they became a MiniMakerFaire too...

Outside

Forgot to mention the posters some lady and gentleman volunteers were putting up, besides the waymarkers arrow pointers on a pole, likely lasercut, routed, there were a few maps printed, they commented that the printer must have been out of ink, the blue/green dithering was off, but it was consistent, I noticed, so likely a design choice.  Not bad, I wasn't looking at the roadmap much, and they had an App on the QRCode link to get the basically html pages down to a device automagically ,having to look around for a paper program to have, it was in a box, and I had already sat down on the other side, waiting patiently, and likely annoying to enter as a mere mortal, read pain in the arse type critic...  As mostly an apartment kid, I really didn't play with tools, at home, we did a little staining and finishing a chest of drawers, and I had a darkroom in the walk in closet, when I was a preteen, but nothing heavy like anyone with a garage, or majored in shop classes...

BlackSmith

Two older kids were blacksmithing out of what looked like a converted wheelbarrow for furnace, and hammered on something like a sword, which cracked, some impurities, process or just part of what happens, seen it on cable too...  Not Giant Swords, but actually a YouTube type thing, I was looking at other metal working and saw people making stuff out of car springs and stuff and the least they could pay/ buy/ and build a kiln/ furnace type thing, a blower, ducting and some fuel being the essential ingredients, afaict...

Eat

Likely walking back inside to H.S. and eat in the warmth.  Saw a golden retriever on the way, nice pet therapy on the way, even if a little awkward with the owner(s) at first...

CheeseCake

Two small round cheesecakes, one eating while waiting for the Salmon Wrap type food to be prepared, sitting on the tennis court fence and commenting on someone's penguin, possibly taken aback by a stranger commenting on such a weird thing, I mentioned that it is the mascot of Linux, and he said it was just a patch for a tear, like the other one...

Slight reference to penguin mania like BabyPenguin2014 very creative non fiction pseudo free writing....

DownStairs

The event had a downstairs component this year, the shop area was open, and they were making racing derby type stuff, and catapults, so I had to take an adjoining detour.

PitStop

Awkward and sick, I found another bathroom downstairs, the first and only one in there to start, I ducked in quickly, forgetting to  take off or cover the 3D cameras, possibly causing some concern walking by the urinals on the way out and a mom present outside...

Part of the possibly over critical part of it, but also a security concern with unknown people around kids, especially unaccompanied adults, not sure what to do about that, no separate family, individual or adult bathrooms like WarthogsRUs2015 or some other places, just be more careful and alert, hopefully not sick and tired too, will help awareness and situational issues.

Unlike teenagers and some others, I don't photograph and video in rest rooms, unless the only one say on a camping trip and trying to document accessibility or other issues (graffiti, etc).  The first bathroom trip, I let the presenter go ahead and took off the wearable camera setup, putting it in the messenger bag, and back on afterwards, but I was more energetic then, earlier in the Con...

Derby

Didn't spend much time in the shop downstairs, another room had a racecourse, and I'm likely combining the two, maybe you made one in the shop, and raced it on something like a big Matchbox type track setup in a bigger activity room with scoreboard, judges, competition March Madness type final four tree, iirc.

Exit

Having walked the whole or most of the thing, and eaten, tired and sick, braving the way back was next.

Get stuff, pack up, and get going, told to exit the side, but thinking it looked too much like stealing, alarmed doors, so walked out the entrance, considered donning the nose, but didn't all day and squeaked the bike horn on the way out, possibly waking a sleeping baby, and innocently inciting the likely verbal attack that followed...

Meant to be funny, the bike horn is almost a farting sound, like a generic squeaker toy for dogs, it is great for the trails, the animals that know, usually freeze and look around for their toy, instead of getting in the way.

Having been turned around, thinking that going right would get me quicker to the new MetroRail station, I stopped and asked a dad and young female kid about directions, at the bus stop at the entrance, having talked to one biker about maybe taking their bike to the valet out back, he was fine with it and i guess based on appearance wanted to make sure I wasn't taking his bike/stuff.  The suspicion was getting rather annoying, and part of the title of this page, Urban and SubUrban is different, and Reston, much less Fairfax and Virginia being  and likely wanting to be different than say DC, possibly seeing it as urban blight, high crime, crowded and dangerous, seemed to be offering me to ride back with them, the kid might have wanted to ride with another adult, the parents having heir hands full with two kids likely out on a family only ride, one young one in a trailer behind mom or whomever, and the young lady being instructed by dad while riding with training wheels.  I was perhaps an interruption, just getting directions, but also biking and not feeling that great, someone perhaps following out the door angry about the funny horn and baby and it got worse from there, in retrospect.  IDK who was yelling at me, someone was rather hostile, I don't think it was the family, at least not to start, it seemed like a stalker of StalkingByProxy2013 fame, but gang and other possibilities too... They had wanted to give something to me, alternating with don't want you here, the usual after any transaction and good times, even pleasant ones, missing the unwelcoming committee, this year, even in the mild form of wait here, don't talk with him, back to work/ volunteering, uneasiness, and it got down to something that could have ended even worse,  threats of banning, possible arrest and jail time, it seemed like another planned attack, some one trying to control, maybe last person seeing me is somehow responsible for my safe return/ travel/ transit, but really I don't plan the route and stuff until I'm away from people and can think again on my own distracted by so many stimulae of the event, food, and stomach, cold and overloaded with information, activity, just trying to get away, not wanting to ride with others, the usual second or third horn besides funny would signal a move right, passing on the left, but the intersection/ corner was blocked, the mom and trailer further up and out of the way, but the dad and young lady on a training wheel bike having difficulty with bumps on curbs the previous side, also had another problem at the other end, it is unstable to go over at that size and taking it slow, learning to ride like a bike rodeo, a good addition perhaps a pre event day or second day part if the faire goes bigger, multiday, and a bike coop, kids and adults learning mechanics, more than just buying stuff, hand me down type bikes between sizes and to bikes for the world, donations, etc, up through brazing two BMX frames into what I call a Cooper Mini tall bike....

Anyways, I went to the road on the other side, almost back and reverse the intersection, doing a u turn, someone said  clear, and I was not listening well at that point, remembering the big hills on the trails and seeing more, but high speed roads near the school relative and a culture that thinks that if you are not Lance you should be on the Trail, but Trail is climbing Mount Everest bike wise, even walking, but hear they like the variety, W&OD flat and long linear trail, and Reston area trails up and down variety, likely with some tree roots bumpy, and slow speed turns, almost hairpin, mountain climbing up/ race down type...

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar

Perhaps the sum of all their fears would be a better title for this, and many interactions with suburbanites...

With a title of NoVALabs and NOVA in the MiniMakerFaire instead of just Reston, it may be the first operating, Arlington's DARPA funded and expensive HackerSpace I've yet to visit, missing the opening, and priced out, much less more green than military fatigues, I'm not sure how I fit in with the current $paces, making my own is probably the only option, but JerrySpaceIdea is ego centered like EgoDroppings2014  and other stuff, so how to be a part of others, around others without being dominated, questioned, interrogated, arrested, in protest or whatever, and discriminated against, as thinking different, even AutieCultureAndReentryIntoNormalSociety , AutismLinks  and other stuff has a really different interaction style, even if Freaks, Geeks and Auties can and Do Get Along, high School, middle School and in the larger society, it will likely be a different way than I have encountered so far....

Discussion

A place for feedback on the page presented

Do you think others have the right to take your photograph and use it for their purposes, just be attending an event?

What if you were the photo crew, how difficult would it be to get releases for everyone, say in group photos of an event?  Isn't it easier to just say everyone must, forgetting that some really don't like being photographed, surveilled and watched?  With and Without a Mental Illness/ different thinking point of view?  Is it Exploitive and Exclusionary to require people to do something they can/ cannot do, with our without reasonable accommodations to attend?

What are your favourite technologies?

STEM?

STEAM?

GeekFest?

How do you get along socially in a school, preschool, middle school, high school, and even college environment(s)?

Is smart different than social?

What of the introverts?

ExtroVerts?

Extreme ExtroVerts?

Like Patch Adams?

Have to be funny, wear a nose to fit in?

Breaks the ice?

Or not be taken seriously as an artist, scientist and/or human being?

Much Less Human Doing?

And in such a job/ career professional type environment such as Warshington DC and SubUrbs?

Suburgatory?  or Not?

Dress Code or Not?

Geek Costume?

CosPlay?

(add QR &&/or GeekCode to those Sold?

The Next Gen Been There, [ all I ] Got [ was this lousy ] T Shirt?)

or GeekCred, semi Goth Style?

 Repurposing UpScale Wear?

If you were to design a T Shirt in the event, what would it look like?

An artistic and/ or autistic version of the yearly event, like Autreat?

or Just Plain Camp?

A collage of your favourite icons and technologies?

Something that might be judged and possibly silent auctioned?

But that might be elitist...

That is the Question(s)?

Or one of them, in a Socrative Method sort of way...

BTW: Why no Girl Scout Cookies?

Known foods, at a reasonable price, supporting a good cause, and packaged food?

Competes with existing Vendors?

Or failed Promise from WarthogsRUs2015 MiniMakerFaire booth ladies?

Could Just be Addicting too...

I ate 5 Boxes in 2-3 days time, seems a little Cookie Monster to me, but YMealsMV.

Good Foodie, Bad Foodie, hungry biker foodie needing packable transportable fuel at predetermined rest stops...

A Note about Variable Names, CamelCase is a common way of reading scrunched together text for programs and people, so a reserved word for a symbol table would be a way of automating this, but no I don't want my links harvested, and a few have threatened that, but I'm not deliberately obscuring obfuscating them either...
