MindsOnTheEdgeDisturbinglyBoring

Introduction/Definition/etc

MindsOnTheEdge.org from SLAMHSA, PBS, Fred Friendly Seminars,

basically hypothetical cases of bad mental health consumers/ survivors/

ExPatients done wrong. Old hospital and med based, no alternatives,

nothing consumer run but the Token Peer Specialist,

Family and Psychiatrist that didn't speak English well,

so really Anti Stigma Done Wrong.

Body

For those that don't know SLAMSHA is at it again...

http://mindsontheedge.org/

Funding by Alfred P Sloan Foundation (old car money)

and van Ameringgen (funds mental health stuff in New England mostly,

but not individual small projects)

Facility (read hospital) based, Big Pharma supporting ("Meds always work"),

but the other bit parts are played by PBS, and Fred Friendly Seminars,

that law school like Socratic Method, or similar found on PBS stations.

I couldn't sit through it...

Like watching "Sanford and Son" and "Good Times" on broadcast Channel 20,

it's aging views of mental health dressed up in edgy and pseudo caring,

and why would consumers attend this?  Family, sure, family with mental illness

think we are problems to be discussed out of school, so to speak

and providers have to have C.E.U.s to keep providing,

and the public thinks we are all shooters, so might was well

give the media what they want.  Drama, half baked,

fully funded and hyped, and do more damage to those

it proports to help...

Mike Gilmore, Alexandria CSB chair, is not Charlie Rose,

but he has the clout to pull together and produce the event,

AFAICT (computer speak for As Far As I Can Tell).

Mental Illness Awaremess Week (MIAW), is just

that, Illness based...  Fall is a difficult time for lots of people,

depression, seasonal and otherwise sets in with the decrease

in daylight times, leaves falling like the hopes and dreams

of consumers who used to apply for funding and got

their dreams ignored, disapproved, or just plain laughed at...

Holidays are coming, and what do the poor and disabled

have to look forward too?  Economic times are worse,

for most, and the national milieu sucks, frankly...

But Obama is putting solar panels on the White/Black House,

and trying to get further in with the green crowd,

possibly losing the gay crowd with "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

Gay Marriage, or whatever the current campaign is...

Like Hollywood trying to do Indie, this just didn't fly with me.

Not that a real dialogue wouldn't be good, or potentially flop,

but this was like a high school or grade school production

of something almost racially hatred like, is the best analogy

I can think of.

Likely designed by committee and having the impact of a Senate

hearing, or CSPAN Congressional coverage, even getting into the

event without being filmed, there was no We Don't Want To Be

On Camera Section that I could tell, and talking to the camera

man while filming and arriving late wouldn't have helped me...

Maybe writing something down?

Sneezed at across the isle (don't people sneeze into their elbow

or something instead of their neighbors?), and a canned script

the actors probably had to read, instead of live and memorized,

like actors are supposed to do...

Wonder what real advocates, real consumers, not paid by

government peer specialists, or Token Consumers, would

do with this?

Hypothetical, no, use real case examples,

people want to review what happened to them,

how they got there, and how it should have been done differently?

Conclusion

Summary of experience or similar
