Wiki Training
(NOTE: Mostly Classic Mode Editing)
by Jerry W
Presented to RRWG around 20060814
Introduction:
Asked to do a little presentation on the wiki. Institute meeting host may have a presentation computer (but Windows :-( and can not use your own laptop?), internet connection and projector available on 20060814 but Wiki was not on the agenda though at the last seen email, so have I wasted more time?
Also, need a different browser (getFirefox.com) for presenting with quick keyboard bindings and possible font size increases and possibly OpenOffice.org for a presentation file?
Wiki by comparison:
Or wiki philosphy?
Typically used for documentation. For example, with recovery, how about the long discussed Regional Consumer Handbook? and/or more legal documents like Human Rights guides? Wikis are capable of evolving as the process changes in the jurisdictions, region, state and nation as well as the interactive and iterative group writing process similar to our proposal process.
Community Process
Usually a community process but also used in a corporate environment for internal networks (called intranets). Possibly useful as examples of an organizational development model.
Alternative Vs Traditional Websites
- Different than most websites where a webmaster and/or development team puts up static pages which the user/reader has no say in editing or changing...
- Some websites have dynamic content and/or programming with scripting languages like JavaScript, JAVA, php, AJAX, database and/or other technologies.
- Content Management Systems (CMS) are usually for large corporate or government websites.
- Forums or discussion boards like hosted Yahoogroups or Groups.Google.com but usually targets of spam and email address harvesting
- see LMEC.org for one of the better traditional regional examples.
- see FairfaxCounty.gov for a large gov site example.
Wiki Examples
Wikipedia.org is probably the most popular example.
Psych.wikia.com for providers and maybe consumers?
Katrina disaster emergency and community response example for rapidly changing content from a diverse community.
PolitiCopia.com for a polictical/ legislative application.
PBWiki
With over 70,000 wikis hosted combined with a rather simple syntax and other features. Also includes a Yummy discussion board / forum.
But PBWiki free has ads, and extremely limited disk space for file uploads.
Unlimited wiki pages. Unlimited bandwidth.
Very limited access controls in the free version.
Public vs private.
Relatively easy to use for a wiki...
Classic Mode Formatting:
See pbwiki's WikiStyle, as Wiki syntax for things like
bolding
italics
underlining
striking
centering,
are not standardized like HTML across different flavors of wiki. They are mostly similar though, so transferable skills across wikis are likely...
Links
Made with square brackets around a word or CamelCase.
Defeating a CamelCase can be done with a tilde before it, for example McDonalds.
Tables
Done with horizontal bars.

Outlining:
Use and exclamation point at the beginning of the line for creating an outline item.
Outlining Levels
Repeat exclamation points for nested levels.
Outlining Sublevels
Table of Contents
Add toc in <> for a table to be automagically created from the outline
HTML
Appears to be also available.
Lists
- Numbered1
- Numbered2
Comparison of many (but not all) of the wiki flavors highlighting various differences and key components.
Peanut Butter vs Steak
Wikimedia.org
is more like steak than Peanut Butter...
